  1. Dave is back in action!
  2. No issue with FanGraphs, as an accountant I get the rounding thing.
  3. They had the best offense in the majors in 2016, so it didn't seem to be much of a problem. Last year was a whole different story.
  4. 2015 1.6 2016 5.1 2017 2.0 +0.1 for rounding LOL
  5. If he has a 5 WAR season that's pretty freakin' good regardless.
  6. Agreed, OTOH Porcello's durability isn't enough to make him a #2 starter.
  7. Overall Porcello is a #3 starter. But his durability bumps up his WAR of course.
  8. What was his final ranking among CF'ers for 2016?
  9. I certainly agree. Standing there watching a straight fastball down the middle is not good. On the other hand, swinging at every first pitch that looks like it might be a strike coming out of the pitcher's hand is not either. My feeling is that these guys are didn't get to the big leagues by not understanding all this stuff at least as well as the viewers at home. Anyway, we can all hope Alex Cora and his staff instill a good approach this year.
  10. I would agree with the idea of game planning. The only thing I would add is that the planning would also take into account the first-pitch tendencies of the opposing starter. But to me all the armchair managing we like to do can be comical. I remember when I was a kid watching baseball games how often I would be thinking 'Why did he swing at that?' when the pitch was six inches out of the strike zone or something. It didn't really dawn on me how difficult it is to size up a baseball being thrown at up to 100 miles an hour, or with all different sorts of spin and movement, from 60 feet 6 inches away. Ted Williams said it, hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports, and he was a pretty good authority on the subject.
  11. Yeah, I know. There's just so little actual news to talk about.
  12. JBJ has all the tools to be one of the best outfielders in the game IMO. He might benefit from using his judgment a little better. One thing I noticed last year following the game threads was a surprising number of comments about him making ill-advised throws, and in fact he did get a minus rating for throwing for 2017.
  13. Minor league deal? He's got a little more upside than Kyle Kendrick if healthy.
  14. With all the stats available to us now, someone who has never watched a game can do as good a job handing out the awards and honors as anyone.
  15. JBJ is one of those players who is tough to project because of his wild inconsistency with the bat. In 2015 (extrapolated) and 2016 he was a 5 WAR player - All-Star caliber. In 2017 he was a 2.5 WAR player - just above average. What will he be in 2018? No one has a clue, really.
  16. Oh I agree. But we might still be able to grab a Wild Card spot.
  17. Yes, it might be just about time for someone to give Dave Dolittle a nudge and remind him there's an offseason goin' on.
  18. I'm sayin' it! Who's with me? I know Slasher is. Maybe Kimmi as well. I think Clay is just about ready to reach his potential.
  19. Where I come from, 93 is 2 more than 91.
  20. Dare I say it? Clay Buchholz as a depth option?
  21. Price missed most of the 2017 season and we still won 93 games. If he doesn't rebound it would hurt for sure, but there are always X factors no one can foresee.
  22. It is a bit ominous. But if Martinez can stay healthy, with the team's help in how they play him, that would give him a big edge over Hanley who has been dogged by injuries with us.
  23. Better off in the first 5 years with the latter. The only positive about the former is that the deals were shorter.
  24. The 2017 Kimbrel is not an easy guy to replace, I would agree.
  25. What else is new?
