What business is it of Scott Boras how the new Miami Marlins ownership deal with their financial issues? 'Pawn shop' is a typical Boras sound bite. He likes the attention. I don't see how you can defend this as professional conduct by a player agent. But you seem to have a 'see no evil' policy when it comes to Boras.

Doesn't change the fact that a contract that long for a baseball player is absurd...or it's a debatable point at least.

The absurdity or non-absurdity of Stanton's contract will be judged by most people in the future based on what he does. Just like if David Price had won a Cy Young and led us to a championship there would be a much different opinion of his contract. The risk factor is huge. But if you're a big-market team like the Yanks and Sox you pretty much have to take some risks like that. Your fans demand it, and they ultimately pay the bills.

I would argue that Scott Boras has indeed made some unprofessional comments, the most recent of which was a public statement comparing the Miami Marlins to a 'pawn shop' - exactly the type of comment you normally read on a message board. Who knows what he says in private?

RIP announcer Keith Jackson, 89. He was best known as a college football play-by-play man, but he also did baseball for ABC in the late 70's and early 80's. He has a connection to Red Sox history as the man who called the 1978 Red Sox-Yankees playoff game.

The AAV of Stanton's contract for the Yankees is arguably a bargain at $22 million. The absurd part is the length of the contract, which runs until 2027.

There is also the latest CBA which put in some relatively small annual increases in the tax thresholds, and instituted some new penalties for exceeding the thresholds.

I don't disagree with that either. If you make it to MLB and have a really good season or two, you can really hit the jackpot.

That's all very true, dgale. On the other side of the coin, an average major league baseball player has a very short career as such.

Really? A few weeks ago I think we would have happily jumped all over that. It's just over half of Boras's original ask. I think all this waiting is just starting to make us a little sour.

Which is why it seems unlikely any team will go much more than 5/125 for JDM. As we've been talking about, the data heads seem to have taken over the thinking of FO's.

The only problem is that JD might then give up and sign a relative bargain deal and Sox fans will be screaming bloody murder about a lack of patience and smarts and so on.
