  1. Sure, we could have replaced Sale and Kimbrel with another starter and reliever for lesser cost. We could also have replaced David Ortiz at DH for many years with someone cheaper. It's no trouble at all to assemble a cheap team that isn't very good.
  2. There are worse things.
  3. Me too. I think I like this kid!
  4. This is just dumb. Benintendi and Devers were fine, and the team that was not 'built properly' won the division for the second year in a row,
  5. If we subtract Sale and Kimbrel from the 2017 team, that's 11 fWAR gone.
  6. I think Stanton is headed to the Giants.
  7. I'm just waiting for Boras to make some big grandstanding speech claiming nefarious activity by the owners because of the lack of action on the free agency front.
  8. Yeah, it's all just thoughts. But it does demonstrate a possible avenue of trimming payroll and replenishing the farm.
  9. That's why it would make some sense to trade JBJ for prospects, especially if we sign Martinez.
  10. Relax. It's just talk, there's not that much else to talk about.
  11. But once again, we had virtually no pitching, so there was little choice but to trade a lot of those prospects for pitching, IMO. If you were DD what would you have done to address the pitching?
  12. Which is one of the points that shows just how difficult it is to keep a good team together as MLB is economically structured. We tend to think of 'control years' as a big advantage, but a player like Mookie starts getting expensive quickly with the levels arbitration salaries have reached.
  13. Yeah, there's been no real news at all for a pretty long stretch of time.
  14. Oh please, explain it one more time!
  15. I do not recall anyone saying 'have faith' as if everything is guaranteed to be jim dandy in 2021. I think this is a distortion. The most common comment I have heard is that we simply don't know what's going to happen between now and then.
  16. It was a short post prefaced by 'I don't think', I don't see how that can be construed as forcing anything.
  17. I didn't blame Ben for the last place finishes in 2012 or in 2014. But I was not happy at all with the pitching staff he assembled for 2015, especially after letting Lester and Lackey go.
  18. I really didn't mean it that way. Kimmi has stated 'The cliff exists until it doesn't' repeatedly, like a mantra, and it sounded to me like a statement of fact. But she clarified it that it's an opinion. I argue with you and Kimmi and Notin about the Cliff and Ben a lot, but I have as much respect for the opinions of you 3 as anyone's. If I didn't respect your opinions I probably wouldn't argue with you as much.
  19. I don't think anyone is saying 'have faith' in Groome or those other prospects. It's more like 'have hope' - because there's no other choice, that's what it means to be a fan anyway.
  20. Some of the local media have solid cred IMO: Alex Speier, Chad Finn, Pete Abraham are all excellent. Guys like Cafardo and Bradford are OK. Then there's Shaughnessy and the others that have to be ignored.
  21. How can outlays of over $300 million not be pulling the trigger? What do you call pulling the trigger?
  22. It's a very interesting and surprising choice. I'd like to say it's a mistake because of the lack of experience, but Cashman has been making all the right moves lately, so I'm in no position to criticize him.
  23. Well now you're just re-stating the obvious. You're leaving out the possibility that we become sellers. That's how your team did a lot of its re-loading if I recall correctly.
  24. But he did pull the trigger in 2015. Castillo, Hanley, Panda, Porcello extension - over $300 million laid out with those moves. Miley and Masterson. He tried to pull the trigger, but he misfired.
  25. I think Cherington left Dombrowski with absolutely no alternative but to trade off a big chunk of the prospects for pitching. Cherington left us with almost no good pitchers at the MLB level, and no pitching prospects anywhere near MLB ready. Plus some crippling contracts.
