That $400 million number for Harper seems like a joke to me. If anything this offseason indicates that teams are getting reluctant to sign these megadeals. The days of hyperinflation may be at an end.

JD Martinez is going to sign for $125 million or thereabouts I believe.

JD doing a one year megadeal doesn't make much sense for him. He just had a career year. He's the King Kong of Slug.

Another downside might be that the client feels incredibly disappointed with a top offer of $125/5. The $210/7 talk by Boras was absurdly unrealistic, even by his standards.

Maybe so. The further down the line you go the fuzzier things can get. I was just looking at the fact that we have Smith until 2020, so is it fair to only count what the M's only got out of Miley while they had him? That wouldn't be an equitable comparison IMO.

I don't know about that, but I don't think you can just disregard what the M's got by trading Miley - if you're really interested in determining who 'won' the trade.

Your calculations are right. A buyout is just more gravy for the player, one of those things that helps entice them to sign on the dotted line, I'd say.

I don't think a buyout lessens the tax hit. It just becomes part of the guaranteed money and is factored into the AAV.

This whole exchange has gotten way out of hand. But a700 is correct when he says he just didn't address the question of whether the 7/$210 was acceptable. He might have been implying that 6/$150 would be acceptable. Based on our discussions, that would be an overpay, but far less crazy than 7/$210. You did kind of jump to a conclusion.

Our window should encompass 2019. We'll probably lose Pomeranz and we'll certainly lose Kimbrel after 2018, but we'll get some payroll room to replace them.

Those who say we don't necessarily need a good bat may in fact be correct. But I would rather err on the side of more offense this year. Those who say we could really use another starting pitcher are right, too.

Take it for what it's worth, but I think my city of Halifax is probably the most American-like city in Canada. We're sort of like a shrunken-down version of Boston. As far as baseball loyalty is concerned, I'm quite sure the Red Sox are #1 here, with the Blue Jays and Yankees in a battle for #2.
