What would Theo do in this situation? If you look at the Darvish deal, Theo really put in a lot of bells and whistles - incentive clauses, a 2 year opt-out etc. Maybe Dave needs to do something a little creative, if they really want to sign Martinez. If they can sign him without adding too much more in actual cash it might be worth it just so they know what the 2018 team is.

So if we had a leader we 'can win 95 games'. Funny thing is, we won 93 games last year without a leader. So you think this great leader might make a difference of 2 whole games. Wow, that's really exciting.

Cheer up, man. Until 2001 the Patriots had never won it all and the Red Sox hadn't won since 1918. Now they have a combined 8 championships since 2001. The Celtics and the Bruins have each won championships since then as well.

Let's try this again. You said: "No GM goes 7-8 years straight drafting 20 or lower." I questioned the validity of this statement and that's why I pointed out the Yankees record for 1995-2012.

Yes, we finished last 3 out of 4 but we won it all the other year. Then we won the division in 2016 and 2017. Since 2003 this team has been more or less continuously successful. When you get knocked out in the first round it's easy to say we 'didn't look like a contender'. I tend to subscribe to the 'playoffs are a crapshoot' theory myself.

And this is why I tend to stay away from all the detailed stuff about farm rankings and prospects. All that really matters to me is that Dombrowski and company make an intelligent effort to re-stock our depleted farm. -
I think Red Sox fans really have gotten jaded by success. The team wins 93 games and the division and people talk about them like they were a disgrace. It's kind of f***ed-up.

It was notin who originally questioned this. But I'm questioning it too. The Yankees made the playoffs every year from 1995 to 2012 except 2008, and they won 89 games in 2008. So yes, it's possible to go a long time without getting a pick above #20 (unless, under the old rules, you got it from losing a free agent.)

Maybe the 'back end of the build' is an 'issue' for every GM, even the best, because that's just the way it works.

I'm not convinced that J D Martinez is any greedier than any other big ticket free agent. The 7/210 numbers from Boras were ridiculous, but the MLBTR prediction was 6/150, and MLBTR has a solid track record with their predictions. Martinez, like many free agents this offseason, has been taken by surprise by how conservative MLB teams have suddenly become. If this was a 'normal' offseason like we've come to expect, Martinez probably would have been signed by the Sox for around 6/150 a long time ago, had the introductory press conference with big smiles all around, and would be with the team in camp.
