  1. Sonny Gray (kind of an odd weather forecast, too)
  2. A GM should be judged on the totality of their moves. Ben gets reamed, unfairly or not, mainly because the team finished last 3 times in his 4 seasons, plus he is held accountable for arguably dismantling a good pitching staff, plus Pablo and Hanley. Theo generally gets a pass for Crawford because of his overall record. DD is still in favor with most fans because he has back to back division wins and a pretty good looking 2018 team. But DD takes his lumps from a few posters here, too.
  3. My time on here relaxes me and enables me to spend the rest of my time much more productively, so it's a net benefit.
  4. Poor Dave, he can't win...even when he has the most patient offseason of his life, he's still not patient enough.
  5. Funny, we say we don't attach any significance to ST numbers, but we can't seem to help doing it...I'm the same.
  6. Stunning. The guy was projected to get 5/85. And of course he turned down a 17.4 QO. Just be thankful the Yanks didn't swoop in on this, I guess.
  7. There are a lot of good new names popping up. Like Rays prospect Johnny Field. Holy crap, what a great baseball name. Like Donnie Baseball, only it's his real name.
  8. And JD got his first 3 hits.
  9. Especially to a team with a you-know-what possibly looming in its future.
  10. A Trey Ball sighting!
  11. What I'm reading is that it's possible he'll be ready for the start but they don't really know yet, there's no timetable etc. He hasn't started throwing again yet. I'm sure they'll take it slow and careful.
  12. I don't think Lackey is coming here. Buchholz or Dickey would be my guess if DD signs any of them.
  13. a) I don't think it's a case of freaking out...just typical pre-season chatter. I think it might be a tad optimistic to say there's a strong likelihood Pomeranz starts the season, which is only 3 weeks away. But we'll see. c) What's the harm in signing a guy to a minor league deal for further insurance? A lot of teams have signed pitchers to minor league deals already.
  14. OK, you finally made me look up Ontiveros's game log for 2000. He had one horrific start, then 2 good relief appearances. Fister, it must be pointed out, was pretty awful himself at times. Overall he was mediocre at best.
  15. 145 in the two years before he got there, to be exact. But your point stands that they were horrible in his first two years. OTOH Theo's Cubs were pretty horrible in his first two years too, winning 127 games compared to 146 the previous two years. Doesn't really mean much, does it? The Tigers hadn't made the playoffs since 1987 when Dombrowski took over, I think that's a little more to the point.
  16. Playing for the Twins today: Zack Granite He came into today hitting .150 this spring. So yes, he's off to a rocky start.
  17. He didn't...I thought he wore the uniform when he managed.
  18. Torey Lovullo
  19. You'd think for all the money invested in the players they could figure some way to make the walls a little less hazardous to the limbs...
  20. Widow-maker it is!
  21. Yeah, I was going to mention that. That's where Swihart got injured. With Hanley, I'm not sure if it was the Monster or the side wall.
  22. I will no longer watch US college sports if I can help it. It's a completely corrupt enterprise.
  23. Or is he another good-but-far-from-elite player who got a little greedy and/or misread where the market was headed?
  24. If you have the highest payroll now, you're not bad for the game, you're good for the game.
  25. It could be that DD thinks Johnson and Velazquez both deserve a legitimate shot as starters. And I suspect he's also keeping a sharp eye on what's left in the dumpster.
