    I thought Cora's comments were meant to be baseball-related, that a bench role could be adverse to Hanley's play. As someone else said it's similar to the idea that being a DH only and not playing the field has an adverse effect for some. Or maybe his comments are subject to interpretation. Maybe he said too much, trying to explain it too much. Hard to say. But I can't see Alex Cora intentionally discrediting Hanley's character.

    Yeah right. Reddick was traded for Andrew Bailey. Bailey had stellar numbers with Oakland. He got injured and washed out like many pitchers do. Wasn't pennies on the dollar though.

    Sometimes you just have to exercise a little common sense. No team is going to agree to a vesting option that they can be potentially liable for even after the player leaves their employment and the team can no longer control the playing time or whatever it is that triggers the option.

    The team obviously felt differently and I respect their judgment. The Bill Belichick 'coach's decision' doesn't always go over very well, as with the Butler case. And Red Sox media/fans are more demanding of information than Pats equivalents. Also maybe there were legit concerns about how the Players Union would see this in view of the option and how Hanley was on pace to trigger it.

    Sure, perhaps the Red Sox don't really know, didn't even bother to read the contract that carefully, because either way, hey, what's another $22 million?

    Doesn't it seem eminently clear that a contract with a vesting option and tens of millions of dollars at stake would stipulate precisely and without confusion what happens in this sort of, not unusual, scenario? It's not like Moe's Pawn Shop and Legal Services draws these things up.

    What exactly was said? What I read from Cora was that it would be a difficult adjustment for Hanley-words to that effect. I didn't get that he thought Hanley would cause problems or anything like that.

    The vesting option put DD and Cora in a bad position from the start. They tried to handle it in a smart way, and they still ended up taking a lot of flak for it.

    Good question. We'll never know the answer to what they'd have done if Hanley had heated up again. Maybe just bided their time a little longer.
