    Cora could see that he didn't have his good stuff just as much as we could. But Porcello has had games in the past where he has looked bad early and then gotten better. Cora's options were all bad there. I understand what his thinking was. That's all I'm saying.

    That and the fact he's a little short-staffed right now with Pomeranz, Wright and Johnson all on the shelf. I think Velazquez was slated to start Sunday's game but he had to pitch 2 innings last night.

    If it's good enough for Theo, it's good enough for me. He's the best or right up there, so why not use him as a model (says me).

    If I could have split my vote it would have been Cora/JDM. I voted Cora because I figure most people will vote for JDM.

    It's not my recollection that it was far out of line. I believe Scherzer had turned down a 6 year/144 million extension from the Tigers at the start of the year and there was some surprise about that, but he thought he could get more. Prior to signing for his 7 year/195 million deal (using the present value thing), Lester had signed for 6/155.

    Lester and Scherzer may be showing it doesn't always work that way.

    Strong possibility, obviously. The Dodgers might make a run at him, to make things interesting.

    Gibson's postseason log is a thing of beauty all right. 3 World Series - 9 games - 81 innings! (One of those was 8 innings and one was 10.)

    He probably would have been an easy sign for what we gave Price don't you think? Scherzer's deal with the Nats equates to $190-195 million in present dollars because of the deferred money.

    Postseason sample sizes and dispersion are hugely problematic, I won't argue that. Although some pitchers, the Big 3 from the Braves, Pettitte and Schilling for example, accumulated some relatively large ones.

    So why'd you ask me about me LOL Some ballplayers also have 20 year careers. I think the point is you can't really apply one general rule to everything.

    In my job, absolutely. Physical stuff, maybe not exactly. But the differences are not large at all. Let's not make 9 years sound like forever.

    Frankly it's still way too early to get excited. The Yankees still represent a formidable threat to us winning the division, especially if they add major pieces before the deadline.

    Yes, if you were going to use one day that would be silly. But if you looked at a guy's splits and he was bad every April it might be fair to conclude that he's a slow starter. And if you looked at Chris Sale's splits...well you know where that's going.

    But I don't really see the foundation to this argument. I don't think the fact that a sample is spread out necessarily diminishes its value.

    Absolutely, and Theo has likely made some bad moves with the Cubs as well. You just need the bad to be clearly outweighed by the good...
