  1. I read some of those comments from other baseball people expressing surprise about the move. What struck me, though, was that none of them made any mention of the vesting option. It was hard to tell if they were even aware of it. And if they were aware of it, why wouldn't that factor into how they viewed the move?
  2. I still have to do my baseball philosophy thread. I'm just not sure what sort of reactions it will get LOL
  3. I think he means because no GM has signed him yet.
  4. I don't think there's any reason to look back. We'll never know what he would have done had he stayed with us but I'm skeptical it would have been good. I suspect he's quite a bit more relaxed where he is now. There's not the same kind of pressure because he's a virtual freebie for the Giants and whatever he gives them is like a bonus. We're paying the bill.
  5. How about 2017 from the time we cut Pablo?
  6. Sanchez is not far off being a sophomore himself, with about 175 MLB games played entering this season.
  7. Well, it helps if you're a big believer in randomness.
  8. I do believe you're right.
  9. It's the kind of s*** that happens in this game. If you expect everything to live up to expectations you're not really paying attention to how MLB goes.
  10. I believe they would have kept Hanley if his numbers were better. He put them in a pretty bad position, facing the prospect of having him continue to post replacement level numbers and have the option vest. And another prospect of them limiting his PA's and causing problems in the clubhouse or with the union. That's two significantly bad possibilities against the one good one of him getting hot again.
  11. Make sense for 2018, or make sense for the long view?
  12. I'm pretty sure Cora didn't talk DD into it any more than the vesting option had nothing to do with it. I think the Sox had a Plan A and a Plan B for Hanley. Plan A was to give him a full shot to contribute this year. Plan B was to bail hard if he went in the tank. He went in the tank hard after a promising start. That shoulder is probably still not right.
  13. Don't look now, but a parrot seems to have crawled up your ass. Because you have something squawking 'Priceless!' over and over the way only a parrot would.
  14. Rookie phenom Juan Soto hits his first major league home run to beat the Yanks in the suspended game! (It's technically his first home run, because the game started on May 15 LOL)
  15. You seem awfully down on the postseason chances of a team with such good pitching.
  16. He had a .750 OPS in 2017 with the injury. He had a .708 OPS in 2018 after the surgery. His ISO in 2018 was only .141, considerably lower than even 2015 or 2017. Smaller sample size in 2018 obviously but the warning signs were there that he might just be toast - possibly from lingering effects of the injury.
  17. Beni in games started by LH pitchers: .231/.273/.538 .811 OPS Even if the starter is a lefty, the starter usually only goes 5-6 innings. You don't really have the option of platooning/pinch-hitting at will, so you have to start Beni against lefties. He will get some PA's in those games against RH relievers and overall, his numbers will be acceptable in those games. He has a 3.0 fWAR less than halfway through the season. He's not someone to be concerned about.
  18. You beat me to it. .679 OPS against lefties last year vs. .769 against righties. So by no means a consistent force against lefties.
  19. One of the wins was also by 1 run.
  20. I have to respect their judgment in this case. I think they sized up Hanley's numbers and the issues with regard to the vesting option and decided the potential problems outweighed any potential benefits.
  21. It is a little baffling that we struggle so much against lefties when we have 2 of the best right-handed hitters in baseball.
  22. Sorry, jung, but I have to pile on here. Beni's not ready? You've kind of lost your marbles with that statement.
