  1. I partially buy this and I partially don't. I think Ben built a lot of X factor into his teams. A lot of guys who were highly variable in performance for one reason or other. Guys who were really hard to predict. Theo kept turning out 95 win seasons. The Yanks as I reluctantly pointed out haven't been under .500 since 1992. For some reason Ben was Mr. Feast or Famine...
  2. I tend to agree. One thing you can say is that none of them been big immediate help.
  3. Maybe. But going from 69 wins to 97 back to 71 is kind of unique, I think.
  4. Sort of like a s*** sandwich with a strawberry sundae for dessert. Damn glad to have Beni though.
  5. Nobody can replace Larry.
  6. Yes, I think these winning streaks are making us all a little nuts.
  7. It seems to be the case that Ben's acquisitions tended to vary wildly in performance. And those were the good ones.
  8. It really stung having seasons of 69-93 and 71-91. It was embarrassing. Especially when the MFY's haven't finished under .500 since 1992.
  9. I don't think it's too difficult to construct an argument that Ben's 2013 title was built on a combination of players he inherited-Papi, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Lester and Lackey, and the lightning-in-a-bottle short term success of Victorino, Napoli, Drew and Koji. There's nothing wrong with being lucky of course. But when Ben's luck went bad it really went bad.
  10. Unfortunately the team's disastrous 2014 season made the 2013 season look like it was indeed incredibly lucky. Just about everything that went right in 2013 went wrong in 2014/2015. Like Victorino, Napoli and Drew. Great seasons in 2013, but that was the end of them.
  11. What is the track record of each sports publication and website's preseason predictions though? That's what I'd like to see some time.
  12. Fenway's LF is notorious for producing strange UZR numbers, isn't it?
  13. I just want the 11.
  14. Could have been both. Whichever it was I'm sure it felt like a kick in the groin.
  15. Not sure I want that record.
  16. Well, we all know he has to do a lot better than 5.2 scoreless innings!
  17. Technically he didn't get fired. The change in his position was so unpalatable that he quit immediately. How's that?
  18. I'd say he has pitched like a #3 this year. (fWAR 1.6)
  19. The substance of events was that Ben was replaced by DD as de facto head of business operations.
  20. With JBJ in CF and Mookie in RF... You make it sound like a bad thing.
  21. Which is just one of the reasons the 2013 team was somewhat miraculous.
  22. Nobody averages 7 innings a start anymore. Sale led the majors in IP at 214 last year - 6.7 per start. If ERod can average 6 that would be great.
  23. I normally agree with that sentiment about being spoiled. But you have to admit the results of the Cherington years were flat-out weird, especially 2012-2014. 69-93 (worst record since 1965) Championship 71-91 (2nd worst record since 1965)
