  1. Some guys do pitch well into their mid-30's - Verlander, Greinke, Lester being some current examples. Certainly the odds are agin it.
  2. I understand that view, absolutely. I think if we lose this series but give Houston a tough time it'll still be a successful season. On paper (run differential), Houston is the best team in MLB this year.
  3. But you're paying the guy big fees to invest your money, aren't you?
  4. Some good stuff here. I do take issue with the definition of 'worth', though. Worth is kind of a tricky word. People pay for a lot of things that they think are worth it, only to find they've been ripped off. Some folks thought it was very worthwhile to hand their money to Bernie Madoff. But when it comes to MLB free agency deals, you pays your money and you takes your chances.
  5. But you considered last year a successful season, in spite of losing in the ALCS, didn't you? In this context success isn't black or white. There are degrees of success. And a lot depends on the individual fan's expectations.
  6. Obviously referring to the idea that people can be motivated by being pissed off about having failed the last time...
  7. Hello Manny.
  8. Another one of the good guys. Seriously, every Sox fan owes a bit of a debt to that umpiring crew IMHO
  9. The Human Rain Delay!
  10. Nice double.
  11. You're not familiar with the D/M format?
  12. 30 years? Jesus. You must be a youngster.
  13. It's absolutely nothing compared to the roasting Boone has been taking from Yankee fans, I'll say that.
  14. It's a lot of playoff games, that's the good part.
  15. I hope he does great tonight with Kate, not so much tomorrow.
  16. Maybe unfair is not the right word. I think there are limitations already in place, the ones I mentioned in my other comments. So managers already have to be a bit careful how many changes they make. It's annoying as heck watching the manager march out there time after time, no question. But it's part of how the game is played now. I don't think we should be making any intrinsic changes to the rules here. There are other 'bigger fish to fry', perhaps.
  17. I thought you said it was 'not even close'.
  18. Not enough metaphorical references to body parts here.
  19. Good. Gotta be flexible on this one...
  20. Oh sure. As long as I can have Rick Ankiel...
  21. I think it's possible that the umps are doing the best they can. Some of these calls are incredibly hard to make with the naked eye. On the force play, you have to be able to see two things at once-the ball hitting the glove and the foot hitting the bag. And both are moving pretty fast. I'm not sure it's humanly possible, frankly.
  22. I'm not sure any such changes would be fair. All I can say is that maybe we should count our blessings that: a) teams are generally confined to 7 relief pitchers because of roster rules; baseball is the only game where when you remove a player from the game they are gone forevermore. I think Kevin Cash in a game this year, instead of removing one of his relievers, moved them to the field in case they were needed again. I've thought of that little move before myself. It could be quite entertaining if the ball 'finds the guy who just came in' as the old adage goes.
  23. And he played for Francona for several years, I'm sure that was a positive learning experience for him.
  24. Verlander-Sale, that's pretty much a 'historic' level matchup.
