  1. Yeah, when MLB gives up on something, you know it's pretty bad.
  2. For a few years MLB was actually tracking "game-winning RBIs" using the same principles as the "winning pitcher" rules (the RBI that puts you ahead to stay) before abandoning it.
  3. Craig says a lot of stuff. He questioned why anyone would be talking about trading Casas, and then tried to do just that. I like him, but when it comes to leveling with us, these guys are all the same!
  4. Looks like another year of Raffy being the worst defender at his position in baseball.
  5. It's been noted that a lot more of the people at Fenway now are fans of other teams. So even staying home might not necessarily have any impact.
  6. Very reasonable take. And I do get why wins still mean something to starting pitchers. It's one of those things that's just kind of wired into them. It's what these guys do for a living, after all. And you will see managers sometimes trying to get the pitcher the win by getting him through the 5th inning. OTOH you see managers throw that right out the window sometimes too.
  7. I think Bregman might be this year's Jordan Montgomery for Sox fans - a guy we talk and talk about mainly just because he hasn't signed with someone else yet, then find out there was really very little interest in them.
  8. Are you including all the "advanced metrics" in that last sentence?
  9. Yeah, the fact that a reliever can get charged with a blown save but also credited with a win is another thing that should put this to bed. The guy gets a win for not doing his job and basically takes the win from the guy who deserved it. Makes no sense whatsoever.
  10. Nolie Ryan's 1987 season should put this argument to bed forever. 8-16 with a 2.76 ERA. It's a thing of beauty in its own way. Nolie is one of the poster boys for misleading W-L records. A measly .526 winning pct. with a 3.19 ERA and 5,714 K's.
  11. Winning is the most important thing for the team, no question. But why should any one player be credited with the win? That's kind of a dumb idea in itself. Pitchers have rarely contributed any run scoring to their teams, and run scoring is half the game.
  12. This is just it, the rules that determine who gets the win or loss are pretty wacky. This year Bello was 14-8 with a 4.49 ERA, and Houck was 9-10 with a 3.12 ERA. Crawford was 9-16 with a 4.36 ERA. Obviously mostly luck.
  13. I lived and died with the 1975-1978 teams. I died on October 2, 1978, and it took a few years to resurrect me.
  14. What about Kirby Yates? I'm surprised he hasn't signed yet.
  15. Team wins and losses - very important Pitcher wins and losses - not very important Why should a relief pitcher who pitched 1 inning be designated as the game winner? Why should a starter who pitched 5 innings be the winner? It's a team game, that's the bottom line. Once upon a time pitching wins and losses did mean more, when starters were routinely throwing complete games. But even back in 1968, you can see with Gibson and McLain that the W-L records didn't match up with the ERAs. Gibson's record should have been much better than McLain's and instead it was much worse.
  16. Frankly until this thread I'd never heard of anything that was the best for a particular century called a "record".
  17. And it'll be the 50th anniversary of that season, so we got that going for us.
  18. The next few months will say a lot. But we still can't see any tangible signs that they're back spending like a big market team again.
  19. Where are you getting the info that they were working on the Castillo trade and the Crochet trade at the same time? Here's what was reported by Boston Strong Dec 26: The Red Sox couldn’t get a deal done with the Mariners for Luis Castillo because they wanted Triston Casas and the Red Sox were only open to trade Casas if they took Yoshida too. That’s why they went with Walker Buehler instead. - @Feinsand
  20. I think that rumored scenario preceded the Buehler signing, not the Crochet trade.
  21. Well, if you believe they're on the level about spending and competing, their #1 target was Fried, and when they lost out there they pivoted to Crochet. I don't think they were ever really big on Burnes. He does have some concerning trends going on. Burnes's deal has an opt-out after 2 years, so that adds a bunch of risk for Arizona.
  22. Arenado is almost 34, his bat is declining rapidly and he has an AAV of 30.56 million for another 3 years. His defense is still very good. We'd dump Yoshida but our payroll would go up by an AAV of 12.56 million. Giving up Mayer to make this happen is just way too much. Unless that's a great young catcher you have in mind.
  23. 2023 splits: Bases empty .874 Men on .676 2024 splits: Bases empty .640 Men on .940 Looks like one of those regression/correction things we all love so much.
