Nobody really knows an ace is, exactly. From my discussions on baseball forums over the years, the pitchers most people think of as aces are on a Hall of Fame track-guys like Kershaw and Verlander. So there really aren't very many of them.

He doesn't have to look like an athlete, because all he has to do is sit around the house, while his beard grows and cobwebs grow on his phone. The only way this movie can work is as a sick comedy, after all.

Just keep it all in perspective and keep your sense of humor...it should all just be for amusement. I like debating a lot of this stuff but I have a pretty old school attitude in many ways. Like you I respect team wins and losses above everything.

The small samples play a huge part in the apparent inconsistency, of course. A reliever pitches one inning, gives up one run, that's a crappy stat line. If he was a starter he would at least have a chance to make it look better.

It's not really saying what players are worth, although that's the way we tend to interpret it. Once you understand what it really represents you look at it differently. That's my take, anyway.

Dammit, now I'm trying to think of an actor who looks something like Dombrowski. James Woods, maybe? Tom Hanks would be better suited to play Theo Epstein. (Yes, I'm from the school that it helps when the actor looks like the real life character they're playing.)

What they did after the signing. That's exactly why the dollar values seem so inflated. They're real values in the sense that they measure what teams are paying on average to a free agent for a win. So it includes all the dead money like Pablo.

It's not of great use but it is interesting, because it shows how incredibly expensive the production of free agents has been.
