18 inning games are very rare though. In 2018 Red Sox pitchers threw 1458 2/3 innings. 162 * 9 = 1458 The extra innings were basically cancelled out by the games where only 8.5 innings were played. Extra innings, and the absence of a time clock, are one of the things that give baseball it's unique character. That's just my personal take, of course. I can see why there would be differing opinions on the matter.

What has changed though, is that the wall between the two leagues has already been broken down by inter-league play. Really what difference would it make now to have one league?

The whole ace thing is pretty dumb, because after all these years it's still undefined. But ace is a cool-sounding word, so it will continue to be used.

I don't quite get it. If BA is a % why isn't SLG a %? The only difference is it measures total bases instead of hits.

That's one of the most brain-dead comments I've read in a while by any sort of sports commentator. What exactly did Pedroia do to deserve that? He got spiked by Machado and was seriously injured, and he obviously didn't condone throwing at Machado's head. This idiot Clark is the one who should be knocked out.

I like the idea behind WAR, which is to measure the total value of a player. With a position player you have hitting, defense and base running all rolled in there.

What you're doing is not without merit. But you have to keep in mind the system is set up so that players make peanuts their first few years. Free agents are more expensive because you need them and you don't have any equivalent internally. It's true, though, that Harper's average WAR is a little light for what he expects to be paid.

IMO Alex Speier doesn't need to have played much baseball to be good at what he does, any more than Dave Dombrowski does.

Agreed. No one trades for Leon. My guess is that no one is very interested in any of our catchers right now and that's why we still have three of them.
