  1. The question (admittedly unanswerable) with A-Rod is how much of those big numbers was attributable to pharmaceutical assistance.
  2. Those are all fair points. But 26 years old or not, an 8 year commitment is arguably risky for the injury factor alone. And Machado has already had surgeries on both knees.
  3. What will be the worst, soothsayer?
  4. But is Machado for 8 years or more a good investment? I am generally on the side of the players in this recent spending stall by the owners, but I do think that the expectations of players for length of contract should be reduced. A 5 or 6 year guaranteed contract should be the maximum. There was a time teams would be willing to eat that many years, but with so many examples like Pujols and Miggy and Ellsbury and so on, I don't blame them for being reluctant to keep doing it.
  5. Extra innings are part of what makes baseball baseball IMO It's a game that involves a lot of stress and suffering on the part of players and fans alike.
  6. The closer role is undoubtedly overrated and overvalued. And yet there is a certain fear factor about being a closer, I think, that makes it a little different. Everyone remembers the big blown saves, even when it was one of the best closers. Everyone remembers Eck in 1988 (and a lot remember 1992 as well). Everyone remembers Mo in 2001 and 2004. Sox fans remember Papelbon in 2009 and 2011. And so on.
  7. I don't think that's the big reason. Lots of very good players have had very bad postseasons.
  8. Under the $40 million+ line you mean?
  9. I'll say this: I wasn't expecting that on February 8 we wouldn't even have any real rumors about Kimbrel being pursued by any team.
  10. I can't really blame any owner who decides they don't want to pay a big luxury tax bill.
  11. Generally speaking, relievers are more of a crapshoot than starters, because most relievers are failed starters.
  12. I'm quite sure the Yankees % has gone down. Don't have time to look it up right now though.
  13. The Red Sox have been spending a vastly higher % of their revenue on payroll than the Yanks have in recent years. Hal is telling us why.
  14. It has helped reduced the gap...Hal is basically confirming that.
  15. Kind of obvious isn't it?
  16. I don't think any of us feel sorry for the players. The concern is for the game itself. And if the players feel like they're getting screwed over to the point they're willing to strike, that ain't good for the game or for us.
  17. Hal Steinbrenner's comments about the exorbitant debt service costs on the new Yankee Stadium made me realize something: It was sheer genius of the Henry group to realize they were much better off not building a new Fenway. That may in fact be one of the reasons my signature line is what it is.
  18. The NFL doesn't need parity. There's only one game a week, and for many of the fans who attend the highlights are the pre-game tailgate party and the post-game tailgate party. And really bad football teams somehow acquire an entertainment value all their own. 'What do you think of your team's execution, coach?' 'I'm in favor of it.' Fans with paper bags over their heads. The Aints. The Jets.
  19. 2018 was a bad year for MLB parity though. Teams with 95 losses or more: 2018 - 8 2017 - 4 2016 - 1 2015 - 3 2014 - 3 That's a very crude measure, but I think a deeper dig will support that there was a significantly larger than usual spread between top teams and bottom teams.
  20. That's a fair question. But baseball did seem to be striving for and achieving a certain level of parity for a while there...maybe we need Bud Selig back LOL
  21. This is broken record stuff.
  22. Well, the Realmuto trade to the Phillies finally seems to be done.
  23. WHIP doesn't really do justice to his tiny SLGa though.
  24. With Edward Mujica.
  25. Slash & OPSa: 204/307/298 = 606 He did give up a lot of walks, but he made up for it by giving up so little good contact.
