    Over the last 2 seasons the Sox are 26-8 in starts by E-Rod. Some of that is good luck with run support obviously.

    Man, the guy is killing it. This must be one of the best starts by a Red Sox hitter in history, on short sample obviously.

    Sandy Leon and JDM would be my choices for consolation too. They'll probably both be coaches some day.

    Not exactly, not with this point anyway. I'm just saying that higher pressure situations exist, not commenting about players' ability to perform under the pressure. But more to your point, I think there are probably some good relief pitchers who really don't want to be closers because of the pressure. I remember that Tazawa really struggled during the short period he was closer.

    Thornburg actually had a pretty good outing last night. Game up a home run to Abreu, big deal. Otherwise he got 6 outs with 4 K's.

    I don't disagree with that, but I'm just talking in general terms. The bottom of the ninth with a one run lead is different from the bottom of the seventh with a one run lead. If you give up two runs in the bottom of the ninth it's irrevocable - it's a walkoff, baby.

    There really isn't much ground to make up to get a Wild Card spot. At the start of the day we're 2.5 games out of the second spot, with 80% of the season to go. But the Rays are for real, IMO. We do have our work cut out to win the division.

    There's no doubt in my mind that pitching the bottom of the 9th with a one run lead is harder on the nervous system than pitching the bottom of the 7th with a one run lead.

    It looks like a team on the upswing to me too. Especially with Sale pitching a game like he did last night.

    No one's saying there isn't pressure in the ninth. You're still going to be using one of your two best relievers in the ninth. It's just that it might be the second-best one. The Guardians kind of had the perfect template when they had Miller as relief ace and Allen as closer. And this is not some nerdtastic breakthrough. It's just common sense, really.

    Swihart now seems to be buried on the Arizona bench. Not seeing much action at all.

    I think there's a 'tipping point' where it's too early to employ that strategy - in regular season games, at least. If you use your fireman in the 5th or 6th inning to preserve a lead it leaves 3 or more innings to cover with your lesser relievers. That's a lot of room for the other team to come back.

    It does make perfect sense. However, I still don't think we'll see many managers use their best reliever earlier than the 7th inning in a regular season game no matter what.
