  1. You mean Baltimore is not a s*** hole and the politicians are not corrupt. Who knew? BTW when was the last time you were in Charm City?
  2. Baltimore is a shithole. Losing population, corrupt politicians etc. They only thing it has going for it is the Orioles and Ravens both of whom are playing in State owned stadiums. When the Colts left, the state bent over backward to get a team back. If it weren't for the Orioles and Ravens, Baltimore's Inner Harbor would be a ghost town and the city looking like more of a war zone than it already is.
  3. It is the politicians who agree to those deals. If the taxpayers are getting screwed then they should take it out on them at the ballot box.
  4. Only about a half dozen major league clubs actually own the parks in which they play. Camden Yards for example in owned by the Maryland Stadium Authority..
  5. Of course. The future is that the average of a ball club will be younger and younger.
  6. It is and that is why the owners are being so tough.in the negotiations They are in the stronger position because they know their skills won't erode over time. Time is on ownership side. If you notice the.players are really worried by the trend of the clubs being more inclined to favor younger players than in years past.
  7. You understood my point exactly. 95 percent of baseball fans can not tell the difference between a bona fide major leaguer and a 3A player unless they are playing against each other. The Franchys of this world all impressed some one or they they would not have been signed in the first place.
  8. I went to high school and college in Worcester. Believe me the Worcester accent is unique. I used to be able to tell the difference between those born and raised there and those from just outside the
  9. It does not matter. It is all about the level of competitiveness. 99 percent of baseball fans can not tell the difference between a AAA level ball player and major leaguer without the laundry to guide them. Fire all 1200 major leaguers and replace them with the next best the vast majority won't know the difference so long as the games are competitive.
  10. If the game is competitive 90+ percent of the fans would not notice nor care. Remember until 1947 the best baseball players never played mlb. Right now America's best athletes are not striving to be major league baseball players. The players realize this and the owners do too. Never forget MLB is entertainment. So long as the crowd enjoys itself they will keep coming. Btw the Worcester Red Sox are hiring extra personnel because they expect a monster year at the gate.
  11. That is similar to what Chad Jennings proposed in the Athletic the other day. It will never happen but it's fun to contemplate.
  12. According to Forbes, the Red Sox had an operating loss of 70m in 2021. Yet because of escalating land values Fenway Park itself is estimated to worth anywhere between 600m to 1 billion.
  13. Player development costs vary widely among teams. Orioles for many years refused to spend to heavily scout players in Latin America. The largest hidden cost in player development are non producing prospects ie a non productive farm system. Apparently the high player development costs were the reason behind Manfred's decision to eliminate the traditional minor leagues.
  14. The purported reason the Jeter quit was because the owner would not spend for players. The consensus among MLB analysts is that the owner was too heavily leveraged. Debt service is major expense for a number.ownership groups. Another major expense.which many seem to discount are player development costs.
  15. Chad Jennings has an interesting piece in the Athletic in which he proposes adopting a European Soccer style system of promotion and relegation for teams who finish last. His proposal while well thought out is admittedly impossible to carry out. It is however an intriguing idea nevertheless. If it where up to me I would implement such a concept but it isn't.
  16. Manfred is an awful commissioner but on the same token Clark is an awful union head. If you just want to hate the owners fine but pro baseball players do not have the skills nor talent to run a league by themselves just like John Henry and the owners can not play the game. Both sides need each other.
  17. That is why I say a Pox on both their houses. Owners and players both are getting rich. I have no sympathy for either.
  18. Mazz is a horse's ass. I used to like his commentary but he has become a self righteous pompous ass. He is just like O'BRIEN just a bit more abrasive. I can not imagine a worse combination than these two.
  19. The TV landscape is about to change dramatically as more and people cut the cord. How this is going to affect baseball revenue is anyone's guess. Since I don't live in the Boston area I can only catch Red Sox games on streaming services. Are Red Sox games available on a broadcast station? The regional sports networks long-term future is not bright unless they all become streaming services. How that affects the bottom line is yet to be determined.
  20. Since I am not able to see the owners books it really is impossible to speak accurately about what teams can and can not afford. What I do know is that the pro sport landscape will change radically over the next 6 to 10 years. The owners have shot themselves in the foot by their ill conceived reform of the minor leagues. The trend is for there to be fewer players over the age of 30 playing regularly in the big leagues. Yet the elder players are the ones calling the shots in the players union. From my point of view both sides are working feverishly to ruin the long term future of the game. When I first got interested in major league baseball, horse racing and boxing drew as many if not more fans than did baseball. Now unless its the triple crown no one pays to see a horse race and unless its a championship fight no cares who is boxing whom. As far as I can see both the owners and players are doing their best to ensure MLB becomes as popular as horse racing and boxing.
  21. Whenever anyone says "It's not about the money" you can rest assured it's all about the money!
  22. A distinction without a difference.orr to put it more simply the difference is only in your mind. MLB is a legally owned patented trademark of Major League Baseball Properties Inc., A private company. There are numerous other patented legal trademarks of Major League Baseball Properties Inc. The terms Major League, Major League Baseball are also patented trademarks.
  23. First of all there is nothing shady about Major League Baseballs legal structure whether we like or not. Rightly or wrongly there have been three decisions of the UuS. Supreme Court over the past 100 years which has affirmed that structure. Secondly the MLB.logo and all the team logos are legal trademarks and owned by Major League Baseball and its licensees. Finally the relationship between MLB franchise holders is not that dissimilar between franchise holders in other commercial enterprise such as Dairy Queen et al. Just like Dairy Queen MLB has forced franchise holders to sell their clubs when an owner has violated the terms of their franchise agreement as in the case of the Cincy Reds during the Marge Schott era.
  24. The owners are well aware that there is growing bipartisan sentiment in congress to tackle baseball's anti trust exemption. Curiously it probably will come more likely from MLB's heavy handed approach to restructure minor league baseball. A suit by former minor league owners is making its way through the courts now. I think it is inevitable that congress will take action if the courts don't. Manfred made no friends in congress over how he treated the minor leagues.
