  1. Re: this whole thing with Beckett, I was going over what Mazz asked Henry during their radio interview yesterday. John Henry said Beckett was injured. Mazz shot back in a sarcastic way " like when he "slipped" after that team meeting in Toronto. What's up with that?" Henry never answered and moved on. Maybe I making too much of the comment, but the inference I drew from Maazz's question is that there was some physical altercation around that meeting. We now know that the players were upset about the meeting because it was about one guy, Beckett. Anyone have a another take?
  2. More to the point, I don't think Jeter would either
  3. I think it was Steve Buckley and Sean McAdams who raised conditioning coming out of spring training on Comcast's Baseball show in April. At the time they believed it represented an organizational philosophy because this wasn't the first year that the Sox broke camp in what they called relatively poor condition. I recall at the time that Buccholtz couldn't go 7 innings in an early start because he wasn't properly stretched out after breaking camp. If this is correct that was a sign that the problems were bigger than Francona.
  4. Yes and a big one.
  5. He made the situation worse because he waited too long. They should have done this two days ago. He disparaged Crawford (neeednessly) who despite having a bad year is a stand-up guy. He made things worse because Larry Lucchino gave the impression when he did his impromtu interview rightly or wrongly that he was having it both ways and could have been behind the smear. He made things worse because there are people in his organization (someone is the source of the smear) who are speaking out of turn damaging reputations and the club. He made the situation worse because he didn't get the complete whole truth out sooner. It isn't about spin it is about transparency and accuracy. This has been one of the worst public relations disasters to hit this club during their tenure. It could have been avoided if they had handled this appropriately but they didn't.
  6. I heard the whole thing. I can't believe that an executive as savy as Henry or an organization that prides itself on rational mangement would be so inadept at crisis management public relations. They may be great marketers and pride themselves on a certain level of PR skills but this was an emotional ill considered effort. While I think that Henry should have spoken to the media, he should not have done so when he was so angry. While I believe that Henry probably didn't know or authorize the personal smear on Francona, his denials raised more questions than he answered. Furthermore, he threw Carl Crawford under the bus. From a crisis management point of view his appearance may have made him feel better but I don't think it helped the situation.
  7. Your laast point is 100% on the money.
  8. If they can't trade Lackey put him in the pen and rename it the chicken coop!
  9. Many feel that Beckett is such a smug self centered SOB that he is incapable of an apology or admitting he did anything wrong. If so, as Hawk Harrelson would say, "He gone!"
  10. Tomase in the Hearld this am took the opposite position. Lou Merloni, Schilling on D&C were touting the same as Tomase. Abraham basically puts the blame on Lackey, excusing Beckett in the process. I smell the FO trying to salvage some of the debris from this trainwreck.
  11. I see a campaign building among the Boston sports writers to drive Beckett out of town. The other knock on Beckett is that he doesn't have two good years in a row. While one can argue that until September he was having a very good year, many don't think he will duplicate it next year. I think the FO will try and deal Beckett if they can. They may not be able to but they'll be trying.
  12. Pumpsie, Talent wise the guys are as good as anyone. The problem is attitude, desire and proper coaching. Given those they could be as good as advertised. That being said Beckett's attidude and his behavior make him Personna Non Grata in Boston. This means he must go.
  13. Beckett is the nbr one bad actor in this drama. He most go! At least they will get something in return. As a ten/5 guy he could veto any trade, but given that playing here will become very unpleasant for the smug SOB, I think he'll get the message and want to rehabilitate himself elsewhere. Lackey is untradeable! If they could work out a deal to send him packing to some baseball Siberia, all the good. If not, I'd tell him that he'll be working out of the bullpen as long relief or a possible spot starter until he has sufficiently readjusted his attitude. I don't think KFC will deliver out there. Lester gets another break! I get the sense he is a good kid but followed the "role model" of his elder peers. Buccholtz gets a pass because he was injured. But someone needs to have a real heart to heart to keep this kid on the right track.
  14. Yea! But for the other team:D
  15. As someone who watched virtual every pitch of every game, I never liked Beckett's attitude on the mound even when he was pitching well. There was something that didn't sit right with me. Clearly the "Texas Mafia" is a problem. They reinforce each others bad habits. While Lackey is seen as the bigger problem, ultimately I see Beckett as the bigger villian in this fiasco, behavior and attitude wise. His behavior enabled Lackey's. The Sox won't or can't get rid of Beckett but they should IMHO.
