Article: A Plea For The Red Sox To Sign Juan Soto
vjcsmoke replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
I think at some point the Mets are bluffing. I very much doubt they will drop 780. And perhaps that's why they say they will pay 50m more because they know that's what they have to put up to beat the Red Sox considering the difference in state taxes and his team preference. If It gets close down to the wire, and we're in it, I'd go all the way up to 725/15 and see if the Mets blink. I don't believe they will go 775.- 687 replies

Article: A Plea For The Red Sox To Sign Juan Soto
vjcsmoke replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
Rumor has it Mets have put forth a 730m dollar offer to Soto. Considering the difference in tax rates, for the Sox to match they would have to offer 715m. Will Red Sox up their bid, or does the dream stop here? Or is this rumored Mets offer bogus with a lot of deferred money to make it sound better than it is? I don't know how he arrived at these numbers, but according to this tweet we are now the favorites for landing Soto. Dude has 60k+ followers, so he's not exactly a nobody on Twitter. Hopefully this is true.- 687 replies

700m/15 years for Soto? Sounds about right. Boras is a hard negotiator. Soto was never going to be a cheap prize to land. Hopefully the ownership has OK'd this contract and he will be donning Red Sox uniform by the end of Winter Meetings.- 687 replies

Story was a horrible signing. They didn't even vet his medicals. 160m dollars wasted on an injury prone "replacement" for Bogaerts. 93 games played, 43, and 26, have been his totals the past 3 years. Adding insult to injuries, his performance as a Red Sox player has been far worse than as a Rockie, proving that playing in the high altitude either inflated his numbers or he simply declined terribly as a player. .737, .566, and .733 OPS compared to his career average of .833. Trust Red Sox brain trust to think buying a broken JALOPY would be a good replacement for a proven all-star shortstop. Hey if it's 20 bucks cheaper, let's just BUY that one!

A new article suggests that the Red Sox are now the frontrunners to land Soto with a 675m/15 year offer. This would be the second largest contract in baseball history and actually means more real money than the Ohtani deal because that 700m deal had a lot of deferred money. I would be super hyped if we landed Soto. The extra term also allows us to lower the cap hit to 45m per year. I'm not saying they shouldn't try. It's a no-brainer to go after a generational talent like Soto hitting free agency in his prime. I'm saying there are still huge public perception problems if they fail to land Soto. The Red Sox ownership have literally been booed at Winter Meetings for making false promises of Full Throttle and also Henry's infamous statement of owning a baseball team is expensive. They need to land the Big Fish to repair their public image issues. Red Sox nation still remembers selling off Mookie Betts for a horrible return because they were too cheap to even try to keep him. The salt rubs in the wound even more when you consider he won TWO championships with the Dodgers after being traded away.

Rumor: Update: Red Sox, Aroldis Chapman Agree to a Deal
vjcsmoke replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
He's a decent lefty to have in the bullpen. And since it's a 1 year deal there's no long term cap impact. Feels like a small win. -

Teoscar is expected to return to LA Dodgers once Soto finds a home, unless that is Dodgers throw 700m at Soto and it's an offer he can't refuse.- 687 replies

Mets offer is rumored to be 611m/13 years. Mets' Projected to Win Juan Soto Sweepstakes on This Massive Deal | Yardbarker This means the Red Sox offer, if it really is 625/13 is still better. This will end up being a where does he want to be more issue. Maybe the bonus check or the structuring is different? Hard to tell what will be the deciding factor. Hopefully the sister's house shopping is a clue he is serious about picking Boston.- 687 replies

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part I
vjcsmoke replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Red Sox signed a new pitcher. Justin Wilson from the Reds. The ERA and WHIP are terrible. I'm guessing this is a reclamation project on cheap money. The 37-year-old posted a 5.59 ERA, 1.456 WHIP and 9.8 K/9 in 60 appearances (46 2/3 innings) for Cincinnati in 2024. -

If this tweet is correct the Yankees offer isn't even close at 550m. Clearly you have to be north of 600 to even be taken seriously by the Soto camp. If I were Boston I'd tell Soto's agent to keep us updated on any new offers so we can match or go higher. It might take 650m to land Soto but it will be worth it.- 687 replies

vjcsmoke replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
I've heard two different offer rumors 13/625 and 12/600. Either way The Red Sox are giving the term and the money, I just have a feeling if it gets into a bidding war it might just take 14/700 to get it done. Not sure if Red Sox will open the wallet all the way for that. This is all speculation of course. I have no idea what the other team offers are but I would imagine they are either in the ballpark of the Red Sox offer or will be upped in the upcoming days.- 687 replies

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part I
vjcsmoke replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Yoshida is a left handed bat who doesn't hit for enough power to balance out the fact that we are way too lefty leaning as a lineup. Yes he had surgery, but will that recover his power from his JP league days? Nobody knows. If we can dump his salary and get a right handed bat without giving up too much farm pieces, I'd explore that trade before the season starts. -

Well if 600/12 is the current winning offer. I imagine if more term is the issue we'd have to go up to 700/14. But at this point I'm all in on SOTO. Just get this Deal DONE!- 687 replies

vjcsmoke replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
I'm a big fan of hitters with high .OBP. They generate value regardless. A guy who gets on with a walk is just as valuable as a baserunner as one who hit a single. It seems tough to find those high OBP leadoff guys though. Durran is coming off his best year yet and his OBP was only .342 but the 54 walks certainly contributed to him scoring 111 runs. Hopefully he can maintain those numbers. If he gets better hitters behind him and maintains plate discipline I can easily see him scoring 110-120 runs for us.- 687 replies

I believe a ground ball pitcher would fare better in Fenway. Anything that gets in the air is liable to go off the wall for a double or if it's a line drive could end up a home run. I've also heard on air talks with Big Papi mention that Max Fried was one of his favorite pitcher targets. Not sure if the Red Sox share the same opinion but I wouldn't be surprised if they are interested. If SOTO joins the mix the Red Sox could field a very good offense and all the pitchers need to do is keep it close and let our bats do the rest.
-
I think we wait to secure Soto first if the rumors hold true. Then we might go after a guy like Max Fried.

Article: A Plea For The Red Sox To Sign Juan Soto
vjcsmoke replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
I am reading tweets that say Soto is coming to Boston. Now I don't know the credibility of these sources but it would be an incredible COUP if true. Soto is a franchise player you can build your whole team around. I'm thinking maybe we should thinking of trading some excess players for a right handed bat to put in the first 5 of our starting lineup. Christmas has come early in Boston should this HOLD TRUE! The Tweet: @BeyondAvgMick BREAKING NEWS - The Boston Redsox have signed free agent outfielder Juan Soto. The terms of the deal are still unknown but I’m hearing it’s 12 years with no deferred money. Expect an official announcement to come within the next few days:- 687 replies

So the Red Sox have officially made an offer to Juan Soto as per NESN article: https://nesn.com/2024/11/red-sox-rumors-when-boston-submitted-contract-offer-for-juan-soto/ Fingers crossed that it was a generous and competitive package instead of the usual penny pinching, lowball offers the Red Sox have been giving free agents in previous years. Now we'll have to wait and see how this develops. I'm sure if the bid from the Red Sox was LOW, the news will eventually leak.- 687 replies

vjcsmoke replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
If you really want to go there another comp for Soto is Big Papi. They are both from Dominican Republic, they carry big bats, and they aren't afraid to be big time personalities in the clubhouse and in front of the press. I know baseball economics has gone crazy, but you gotta pay what it takes to sign generational players when they become available. This would help a LOT to get over Mookie Betts fiasco. And no, I'm not skipping adding a generational talent to our roster in the hopes that a green kid playing in Worcester might take the step up to the big team in a year or two. Roman Anthony looks nice but he's not a Soto. He could turn somewhere north or south of Ellsbury, Benintendi, or Josh Reddick for all we know.- 687 replies

Rumor: Juan Soto Looking for 12-14 Year Deal
vjcsmoke replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
Absolutely. Only 45m per year? Give him the long term deal and lock him up for life! I was thinking he would want closer to 50m+ per year to be honest. -
Article: A Plea For The Red Sox To Sign Juan Soto
vjcsmoke replied to Maddie Landis's topic in Talk Sox Front Page News
Soto is a generational player and talent. I would offer 12/630. That's 52.5m a year. That gives him the length he wants and a healthy annual salary. If the Yankees are going to beat us to him at least make them pay through the nose for the privilege. To me Soto has the feel of Alex Rodriguez. Whoever lands him will dominate the division for a decade and win multiple World Series. I don't think our ownership has the balls to put their wallets where their mouths are.- 687 replies
