  1. Today is a big game -- the last meaningful game of Jeter's career, as the Yankees are eliminated from playoff contention.
  2. My predicted roster: Rotation -- Lester/Hamels/Kelly/Buchholz/RDLR Bullpen -- Koji/Tazawa/Miller/Mujica/Layne/Barnes/Workman Outfield -- Castillo, Cespedes, Betts Infield -- Napoli, Pedroia, Bogaerts, Sandoval, Russell Martin, Ortiz Bench -- Nava, Victorino, Vazquez, Holt The starting pitching is reloaded. The lineup will be much deeper with acquisitions of Martin and Sandoval. The bullpen won't provide many new faces, but adding Workman and Barnes to the mix will be a big boost for the team, since they seem far more productive in that role.
  3. Fred, the Red Sox are not trying to win these games. There is absolutely no reason to try to win these games. The tickets are already sold. The veterans are already veterans. The difference between 70 wins and 75 wins is the difference between the #5 pick in the draft versus the #12 pick in the draft. This team is going to play its rookies -- no matter how bad they are -- every single game. Maybe even moreso if they are bad.
  4. Boom. Manfred drops the hammer. New MLB Length of Games Committee. Clearly he's reading my posts on Talksox.
  5. He still has more value in our AA than someone else's AAA. He's exactly the kind of player that is going to leave and immediately figure it out in another organization.
  6. How many options does WMB have? No chance they trade him unless they have to, or if they can get a lot for him (or for him and others).
  7. So far Ranaudo has been pretty mediocre. He hasn't been excellent, but he hasn't gotten shelled either. He's definitely someone we need to see more of.
  8. Ben is going to trade for a pitcher. There are more guys available this year than usual. I believe Hamels and Cueto are options 1A and 1B. Latos, Leake, Gallardo are also going to be hanging out there. The Rays only received one top 100 prospect for a year and a half of Price's servicetime, so I am doubting that most of these will cost much more than that. Teams are holding onto their trade chips very tightly nowadays, and that may be big in the advantage of the Red Sox.
  9. Mookie continues to look like a major leaguer.
  10. Bogaerts has been really inconsistent this year. The first third of the season, he had a .400 OBP, and a .850 OPS. The second third he he hit .150. Now he's hitting very well again. I dunno.
  11. You could have replaced "Bogaerts" with "Montero" and .863 OPS with .852 OPS a few few years ago, and it would be exactly the same. Overhyped prospects are overhyped. Hopefully Bogaerts's recent surge is a sign of things to come, but at the end of the day, they probably should have traded him, as the Yankees did for Pineda.
  12. Chris Davis suspended for PEDs, and potentially out for two playoff series. Hahahahahahahah
  13. Allen Webster on the mound against the Royals tonight. His career ERA in the major leagues is 7.39.
  14. The Sox HAVE been mathematically eliminated. Thunder, you are free to make game threads as you please.
  15. Yeah, what a terrible slug that pitched all those dreadful world series games. Good riddance.
  16. I am still convinced the big fish are in Cincinnati and Philadelphia. Samardzija/Harvey are going to cost Owens/Betts.
  17. I don't know if it is any consolation, but Bogaerts has a 1.000 OPS in the month of September.
  18. Yahoo has stats by number of pitches: 1-15 pitches, hitters have a .761 OPS against him 15-30 pitches, hitters have a .440 OPS against him 30-45 pitches, hitters have a .674 OPS against him 45-60 pitches, hitters have a .579 OPS against him 60-75 pitches, hitters have a .666 OPS against him 75-90 pitches, hitters have a .722 OPS against him 90-105 pitches, hitters have a .863 OPS against him The first 15 are probably skewed because those pitches are guaranteed against the top of the order. He definitely starts struggling around that 75-100 area.
  19. Goodell claiming he never received the tape. AP reporting that the NFL was given the tape. This is a huge PR issue, and Goodell might lose his job here.
  20. Workman is a bullpen pitcher. He did very well in that role. Hopefully this team figures that out before it is too late.
  21. The Yankees weren't willing to break 200 for Cano, why do you think they'd spend the 300-350 to get 26 year old Stanton?
  22. I think that between Kelly, De La Rosa, Buchholz and Ranaudo, they will be able to pull together a mid-to-back end of the rotation. I'm not concerned about those spots. The #1 and #2 spots are the ones I am concerned about.
  23. He's either hurt, or he's not. If his back is still an issue, he stays on the DL most of the year. Otherwise, he's still a very useful player, adding a solid platoon split against lefties, a good arm, range, speed. Pretty much all the things you want in a defensive replacement/pinch runner/platoon type bench guy.
  24. The Red Sox are going to be okay. The farm system isn't the superstar factory we thought it was, but there is plenty of money available this offseason. The offense has turned a corner, and the pitching has some pretty strong #3/4/5 options. They need to go out and get that #1 and #2 guy, and maybe another bat, but I see enough pieces and money to get this team back to contention.
  25. Not all prospects turn into stars, or regulars. We've seen lots of prospects fail, but lots of prospects do fail. Not many teams get a chance like this, to figure out which of their prospects are major leaguers, and which are 4A material. I'd much rather see Webster prove he is a 4A guy now than in a season that matters. Hopefully the team is figuring out that Workman is a reliever, and that Bradley doesn't have a place on the team. And that Mookie Betts and Henry Owens are the players who are untouchable. If the Red Sox didn't know what they had, and traded RDLR, Betts, and Vazquez for an aging star, and were stuck with Webster, Bradley, and WMB, most of us would have been pretty pissed.
