  1. I'd hesitate to trade for Frazier. 3 years for a cost controlled 30 HR bat may cost more than 1 year of a cost controlled ace. Trading those two players would mean they're going straight into rebuild mode, which means the Red Sox will need to overpay significantly.
  2. I figure that there is a different between Politics and Current Event discussion. Politics has two sides that hate eachother and devolves to fights, whereas human trafficking and fascism are almost always bad.
  3. No offense taken or intended. I understand that you aren't a fan of many of these guys, but when in comes to raw numbers, these guys have taken the league by storm. Maybe Puig, Cespedes and Abreu haven't impressed you, but they have gotten a significant amount of attention from the league, hitting piles of home runs and rbis while being mostly unnoticed in international competition beforehand.
  4. Allegedly? Just in the last few years we've seen Puig, Abreu, Cespedes, Soler and Castillo come over and earn monster contracts. Maybe it is too early to tell on Castillo and Soler -- who both had stats of .900+ OPS in small samples this year -- but the other three guys are 20 HR bats that seemingly just showed up.
  5. One of these days, Cuba and the U.S. are going to have an international crisis due to either scouts trying to stow away to getin to Cuba to watch games, or if baseball teams start using drones to watch Cuban baseball games. Hell, the number of Cuban defectors is probably going to become an issue since it falls under human trafficking and a bunch of other ugly umbrellas.
  6. Who has the better arm? I was the under impression that Castillo-CF/Betts-RF would be the better defensive outfield, but haven't seen much. Welcome back, by the way.
  7. Where do these guys come from? It seemed like we used to know about the superstars in other countries/leagues, but now we suddenly have waves of top talent players coming from virtually nowhere.
  8. I just took a look at his September schedule. He faced Zobrist, Longoria, Loney for Tampa, Hosmer, Butler, Cain for Kansas City, and Reyes, Cabrera, Bautista for Toronto. Baltimore was a bit understaffed, but he faced Cruz and a few others there as well. I don't think bad September logic applies here.
  9. Everyone was probably already thinking it. I don't understand these guys with hundreds of thousands of dollar salaries don't just take a cab. Uber is really convenient (although probably not available there). If I owned a baseball organization, I probably would even start comping that kind of thing.
  10. The problem with Panda's price is that the Giants have a habit of paying their own guys market value. I see them going up to 5/60 to 6/80, and I would imagine the Red Sox will have to blow those numbers out of the water to make him leave such a great situation in San Fran.
  11. I've said this in several threads, but if you're paying 110 for Hamels + 60 for Howard (or 60 million worth of prospects), why wouldn't you just pay 150 for Lester/Scherzer? Those guys are proven in the AL. Those guys have significantly fewer innings on their arms. Those guys don't frontload big contracts. Do you really think the Red Sox should take on 40 million in payroll a year just to get one player?
  12. You don't pay 15-20 million dollars a year on a player who is 15th at his position.
  13. Sandoval weight issues are a big deal here. David Ortiz was overweight for a while there, but he was motivated by the yearly arbitration and qualifying offers. He worked hard to get into much better shape, and it saved his career, and potentially put himself into HOF conversation. I would argue that his year-to-year contract situation made him a better player. Giving Pablo 6/100 means he'll be fat and happy for the rest of his career. I don't want anything to do with that.
  14. In other news, the Nationals and Cubs are discussing Zimmerman. We're talking a guy hovering around 200 IP, a 3.00 ERA and 1.10 WHIP the last three years. The guy is good. Wonder what it would take ?
  15. Meanwhile, somewhere in Texas, Dojji's Arlington doppleganger is clamoring for the AAA Round Rock Express to trade Che Hsua Lin. But seriously, trading Napoli serves no purpose. His contract is good, not great. At best, the Red Sox might get a mid-tier prospect and leave a gaping hole at first.
  16. The Mets just signed Cuddyer, giving up a 15th overall draft pick in the process. Seems like a poor investment, unless they decide to sign other QO type players.
  17. Just to clarify, as a reliever in 2012 and 2013, Miller did not cut down on his walk rate at all. He didn't do that until this year. There's my skepticism, his improvement is really a one-year sample at this point, which seems like a big risk for a 4 year contract.
  18. Being able to play first base is not versatility. You can take most players with a big bat and poor defense and hide them at first. The last thing this team needs is to spend 100 million dollars on a player with a .750 OPS, and stick them at the most offensive orientated position in the majors. If Sandoval can't play 3rd, they should not sign him.
  19. Perhaps I overstated his career numbers, but the control issues are definitely there. Besides 2014, his BB/9 has been extremely high his entire career. In 2012 and 2013, his first and second years as a reliever, it was 4.5 BB/9 and 5.0 BB/9. Relief pitching is the most inconsistent position in baseball, and I seriously doubt Miller is going to be worth that 4/40.
  20. Howard has 60 million left on his contract, and has been virtually worthless in one of the best hitter parks in the majors. Nap/Vic may be worth their contracts, and may be worth a qualifying offer and possibly pull in draft picks in 2016. You'd essentially be spending 5/170 plus prospects for Hamels, and losing several quality players. Why not spend that money on Lester or Scherzer? Scherzer has 600 fewer IP on his arm, and Lester 200 IP.
  21. Here's the question about Andrew Miller. Do you want to give 4 years to a player who has only had one excellent season? This is a guy who has a 4.91 career ERA, and has previously had major control issues. I'd rather give the money to a 32 year old K-rod than a 31 year old Andrew Miller.
  22. I agree with those, but the age factor is less important when you are looking at 28-34 or 31-34. I also worry about Pablo's weight issues longterm. No matter how Pablo performs, he will only be able to perform up to his contract, and never outperform it. If Headley ever shows 2012 offense again, he's an extremely valuable pickup.
  23. I just can't stop thinking that maybe Chase Headley will be the next Adrian Beltre type signing. He has 30 HR potential, but was stuck in bad lineups the last two years, and in a big time pitcher park most of his career. He has less power, and more OBP, but he's got Beltre defense at 3B, and can be had for relatively cheap, without draft pick compensation. Pablo also played in a pitcher park, but the defense isn't remotely close to as good, and will cost significantly more money and talent for an extra career .050 OPS .
  24. And to Sk7's point, many of the best performances as well. It seems like very single year, this organization has felt like it is only one or two pieces away. They've made plenty of mistakes and it hasn't always come together, but they've built so many teams with the potential to go all the way. I don't think this year will be any different.
  25. I've been arguing that Lester is a #1 pitcher for years. After 2013, I really shouldn't need to anymore.
