  1. The phillies will need to eat Howard's contract. They will get absolutely nothing for him. I have suggested Pap and Ruiz as possible salary dumps that make sense for the Sox.
  2. Yes please.
  3. It is a big problem if baseball fans don't watch quality baseball for the purpose of watching quality baseball. That is the problem the MLB needs to solve, instead of giving big markets advantages to get them into the playoffs. Soccer and football don't have that problem -- people watch any team at any time. A Shields-Lester matchup in an elimination game for two teams absolutely desperate for a championship. If the ratings were low for this one, the MLB is at fault here, not the teams involved.
  4. ...this was assuming they'd take him out in the 8th. Man, the A's bullpen sucks.
  5. Maybe its just getting to watch Lester in yet another elimination game, but the Red Sox really dropped the ball letting him go. He's truly a special talent -- so many of us here were spoiled by Roger and Pedro, but for other teams, he would have been a generational type arm.
  6. Big Game Shields was bounced early in the fifth at 80 pitches for a wild rookie who proceeds to get lit up. Our old friend Soxsport probably is feeling pretty smug right now.
  7. A recent quote from Werner makes it sounds like they're opening the paycheck for pitching.
  8. Buchholz undergoes knee surgery. I bet that was what was causing his ineffectiveness. Yeahhh, torn meniscus, that's serious enough, right? He'll be back to dominating next year, I am sure. Quiet you, Jacko and your medicine and science.
  9. Joe Kelly will also go down in history as the last pitcher to strike out Derek Jeter.
  10. Hamels will be a tough trade. I would imagine one of Betts/Eduardo/Swihart would need to headline. While most of the Red Sox's young players have looked pitiful, maybe there is one guy that their scouts love and believe they can fix to turn into a solid contributor. I also think the Phillies may be looking to dump payroll onto the Sox. I'm thinking Eduardo/Trey Ball + one of the guys who has struggled in the majors for Hamel and some combination of Papelbon/Ruiz.
  11. Will Myers doesn't fit here. Jake Odorizzi has been a top 100 prospect the last four years, and pitched a full season at a 4.00 ERA this year -- the guy was not a throw-in. Hamels will be expensive, but his contract will lower demand a bit.
  12. Jon Lester is starting the wild card game? Sounds like must-watch tv to me.
  13. I am starting to see the value in the Lackey trade. The real get here was Joe Kelly, who is going to be a consistent #3 starter for this team at low prices for a few years. Allen Craig is starting to look a whole lot like a salary dump by the Cards, but maybe the Red Sox can get rid of him somehow. I still have no idea how the Red Sox somehow managed to come away without any top tier prospects for Lester/Lackey, but atleast Kelly is cheap and reliable for the next 4 years.
  14. The Red Sox are going to pay up for Lester. Their starting pitching prospects took a nosedive this season, and it seems very clear how strong a need starting pitching is. The Yankees and Cubs will both be hard in on Lester, with both giving offers as high as 180-200, but I would imagine 140-160 would still be enough for the Red Sox to get him back here, if it includes an ironclad no-trade clause. It is a s*** ton of money, and he'll probably only be worth it for half of the contract, but if this team wants to be competitive, it needs him.
  15. Papelbon's biggest problem was an insanely high level of competitiveness. He wouldn't have tolerated a crappy season like this one or 2012. Is that a problem? Maybe.
  16. Bartolo Colon surgery? Hiding steroids in fat.
  17. Yeah, that career 2.37 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 10.5 K/9 would look awful back in a Red Sox uniform.
  18. That's the thing. You can't say "Let's go all in on this guy.... until we see him in the majors and realize he can't hit". You either sign major league players and build a major league team, or you stick your neck out for minor leaguers and hope everything goes accordingly. If you wait until Spring Training, all the best options are already signed and traded for.
  19. I saw that yesterday. Love it.
  20. Worst case scenario, he sucks or is a problem, and they cut him. His option doesn't vest unless he finishes 49 more games in 2015. If Koji is retiring, I have no problem getting the second best option for 1/15.
  21. You were talking about Bradley the same way you are talking about Swihart just a year ago. This organization needs backup plans for its prized prospects.
  22. The phillies need both. I don't think they trade Hamels unless they get a real package for him. All three of the players coming back to the Red Sox are actually productive, thus why they would trade for them. Ruiz, and Hamels seem like great fits here. Papelbon would be interesting to say the least.
  23. I know a lot of people who paid hundreds of dollars for Jeter's last game. He's too conceited not to play out the season.
  24. The Phillies are in desperate need of salary relief, and the Red Sox have some extra money. I am toying with Hamels, Papelbon, and Carlos Ruiz for Swihart, Eduardo and Trey Ball. Beltre has arguably been a top 5 player in all of the MLB since his time with the Red Sox, so I doubt the Rangers trade him at a reasonable price.
  25. Martin could be pricey. He's only 31, surprisingly, but he's by far the best option on the market. Considering the Red Sox spent 10 million on AJ this year, they might be willing to do 30-40 million on him. I'd also love the Red Sox to pursue Carlos Ruiz who is pricey but gets on base. Maybe Hamels + Ruiz for Swihart + others makes sense. Miller isn't a lefty specialist. RHH have been hitting to a .396 OPS against him this season. If you want to put that into perspective, when Miller is pitching against righties, they hit like Jackie Bradley.
