  1. Apparently Lester sold his Newton home yesterday. That's no good.
  2. One of those mornings. Reverse it.
  3. I wasn't suggesting a Sandoval + WMB platoon. I would probably go with a Francisco/Holt platoon. Holt is already going to be on the roster, and can play super-sub if necessary. Middlebrooks and Cecchini would start in the minors, and if either ends up ready to take over, they can. Platoons are always painful on the roster spot, but we no longer need to worry about the Gomes/Nava spot in LF. I'm willing to cut ties with Craig, the guy looks done. OF is Cespedes, Castillo, Mookie. Bench is Nava, Vic, Holt, and whoever they sign for backup catcher. If Cespedes is willing to play RF, this team has many versatile players that can move into a variety of spots. Nava at 1B/LF, Vic at any OF, Mookie at any OF and 2B/SS, Holt in the infield. Just to be clear, this is only a strategy I prefer if the Red Sox go spend 300 million on Scherzer + Lester and need to save money. If they sign McCarthy and Masterson, this strategy is not acceptable.
  4. You know who else strikes out 40% of the time? Adam Dunn in his prime. It didn't stop him from hitting tons of home runs and driving in runs. Juan Francisco is not this team's starting 3B next year. However, he fills two of the team's needs : power against RHP, and a third baseman. Here are some interesting numbers: Sandoval's OPS : .279/.324/.415/.739 Juan Francisco's OPS v. RHP .238/.306/.504/.810 Plus one of these guys... Brock Holt's 2014 OPS v. LHP .293/.343/.421/.763 Will Middlebrooks career OPS v. LHP .261/.315/.443/.758 If the Red Sox decide to go for Lester + Scherzer, and need to cut money elsewhere, I don't see a platoon at 3B being a bad idea here. Best case scenario, one of those three guys puts it all together and becomes the complete package, which I don't think is completely out of the question.
  5. You're manipulating stats here bud. Zimmerman has thrown 195, 213 and 199 innings the last three years. He started 32 games all of those years. I don't know about you, but I would be perfectly fine with those numbers on this team.
  6. Two very solid prospects who look to be major league regulars, and a high ceiling/low floor type. Seems reasonable for 1 year of an above average pitcher.
  7. http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/Red_Sox_may_be_moving_on_from_Cole_Hamels.html
  8. New report coming out that the Red Sox are moving on from Hamels. Apparently the 110 million + Xander +Mookie+ Owens deal that Amaro is asking for is too much. If I was a Philly fan, I would be calling for his head.
  9. I hope that offer was closer to 120 than 110. 110 won't do it.
  10. 3B. A WMB/Francisco platoon could be hilarious. They'd go 1-5 with 1 HR and 4K several nights a week.
  11. They claimed a player with 20 HR power off the waiver wire. They don't even have to keep him or pay him if they don't want to. Its an excellent, excellent pickup that does absolutely nothing to hurt the team.
  12. Juan Francisco hit .238/.306/.504/.810 against right handed pitchers last year. The OBP sucks, but look at the slug. I cannot believe Toronto let this guy go for 2 million bucks. He seems like he fits a real need for the Red Sox.
  13. It seems that the Yankees use a take-it-or-leave-it approach, whereas the Red Sox use a "here's an offer, think it over" approach, and it usually bites them in the ass. The problem here is that the Red Sox need to slow-play Lester here. Trading him hurt the relationship, and they need to treat him with respect, and continue to leave the door open for him. Rumor is, the offer will be somewhere between 120-130, and he needs to give Boston a discount, so that is part of the negotiation here.
  14. Yes, it is an either or. Either Hamels/Lester, Scherzer/Lester or Hamels/Scherzer. If they're going to have to pay 110 million + 3 top prospects, why not save the prospects and pay a little extra for the free agent?
  15. He is 25 years old and already has 150 home runs. I'm not big on long contracts, but if you're getting a top player through ages 25-32, sometimes you just have to bite the last few years. It also has an opt-out option, which I am betting the Marlins believe he will use.
  16. Hamels is looking like he will just cost way too much. 110 million and 3 top prospects, for a guy who has tons of miles on his arm and no AL experience seems crazy. If the Red Sox trade Xander or CV, they're going to need to pay players to replace SS or C, which won't be cheap either. I see absolutely no reason to trade for Hamels at that price, when the Sox could just pay 150 for Lester or 180 for Scherzer.
  17. The Red Sox also went over the spending cap this year, so they won't be able to sign him next year either.
  18. I heard something interesting the other day. Pablo lost a lot of weight last offseason, but actually ended up putting on pounds during the season. If more weight means more power, the weight-incentives John Henry is rumored to suggest aren't actually going to help the team.
  19. Here's the thing. The Red Sox have a lot of top prospects. Some, many of them are going to fail. But there will be a handful that will thrive and prosper in the majors. I don't want the team to trade away the Lesters and Pedroias because of the Lars Andersons and Michael Bowdens.
  20. And wouldn't take a draft pick either.... the whole thing seems awful to me.
  21. Really not liking Sandoval at 3B for six years. Oh well, better than WMB.
  22. When was the last time we saw a prospect as completely untouchable on the mound as Owens? This is a guy who has been a no-hitter threat every time he has been on the mound. The 92 mph fastball may prevent him from being an ace, but I doubt it will stop him from being a mid rotation starter.
  23. For the sake of argument, let's consider the "right ones" are the the players that the older gentlemen here will blast Ben for in 2018 for trading away now, regardless of where or how they blossomed. You were talking about trading away outfielders... Cespdes is not a prospect, but isn't he the most tradeable OF asset? Who else were you referring to here? Baseball heavily underrates Nava, the price is too high for Castillo and Vic, Margot is too young, Bradley isn't a top chip anymore, Betts is supposedly untouchable. I don't understand how the Red Sox's outfield depth helps Cinci here.
  24. When you deal 5 prospects, you're not going to be able to deal from a position of strength. Cespedes, Cecchini, and 3 pitchers is a big haul. This organization has several top pitching prospects, and some will be duds, and some studs. I just have zero confidence that they will trade the right ones, because their track record has been tough lately.
  25. I couldn't imagine getting Cueto+Frazier for any less than 5 good prospects. That's a big haul, especially with a team this far from the playoffs. I wouldn't deal a haul like that unless it is for a franchise altering player, or if it is midseason and it would push a team to the world series.
