  1. DFA, trade, bullet to the head. I'm okay with any of those options.
  2. The Red Sox pride themselves in making smart decisions, and getting value through youth and dollars. They're almost arrogant about it. Cole Hamels is everything the team wants. He will cost a lot of prospects, but the contract will prevent many small market teams from pursuing him. He's signed for 4 more years at ages 31-34. He wouldn't pitch a day as a 35 year old for the Sox, unless they pick up his option for the 5th year, which gives them even more flexibility. He's a playoff stud that would pair well with Lester in October. If they can get Hamels without moving the top 5 prospects in the system, they'll do it.
  3. With two new starters, we're looking at the remaining 3 to be Kelly, Rubby and one of Workman/Webster/Ranaudo. That's a solid backend, assuming the top two are solid.
  4. Also remember that there was no DH in 1965. The average NL team in 2014 is scoring 3.95 runs a game, so that is pretty damn close.
  5. It depends on what teams would give up for Mujica. He's owed 4.75 million next year, so he may be a rare reliever to sneak through waivers. With so few options out there, who knows who might get desperate.
  6. Mujica is looking very good since the All Star break. I wonder if the Red Sox will get rid of him through the waiver wire.
  7. Greg Colbrunn had a brain hemorrhage back in July. While not an excuse for bad hitting, I would believe there is a strong correlation between his misfortune, and this offense's misfortune.
  8. Vazquez is a beautiful glove. During the Cardinals broadcast last week, they mentioned that he trains with the Molinas in the offseason. Hoever, I am not sure how the Red Sox FO sees his future with the bat.
  9. Here's a thought. Russell Martin. Remember that guy? He's only 31 and is back to free agency again. Career .355 OBP, .750 OPS, but he has a lot of success in the last few years. The Red Sox have rushed their prospects way too much lately, and maybe he could help give Swihart some breathing room on a high AAV 1 or 2 year deal.
  10. It probably has to do with Buchholz publicly shouting to the world that he's healthy. Workman, Webster, Kelly and RDLR are the guys being auditoned right now. Ranaudo is probably in the next round.
  11. Lots of Webster hate for this one. Considering the guy has had a such good numbers in the minors, we should give him a few more chances, at least until better options emerge.
  12. Rubby has been looking like a serviceable 3/4 on a good team.
  13. Kelly through 7 with 1ER, not bad, not bad. Its funny that this team's two acquisitions in the Lackey trade both have had minor injuries in their very first game with the Red Sox.
  14. Kelly looking pretty gutsy out there. Hopefully he's okay.
  15. I've enjoyed getting to see Kelly debut against his own team, listening to their announcers. Seeing this kind of ovation for him definitely gives me more confidence in him as a ballplayer.
  16. Kelly with a 4 pitch walk to the pitcher. Yack.
  17. We heard the same exact thing after 2012, and the FO went out and bought 7 expensive free agents. This year, they added AJ and Mujica, and then added Drew for 10 million midseason. These guys aren't cheap, they're frugal. Contrary to what most wives think, there is a big difference between the two.
  18. I agree. Hamels is actually worth the contract he has, so the Red Sox will need to overpay in prospects, or take some money back in a trade. Ruiz/Burnett/Papelbon make some sense here, and with that kind of trade, the Phillies can get out of payroll hell, minus Howard. Those players also fill holes for the Red Sox, and are only short-term salaries to take on.
  19. If the Red Sox plan on building a competitive team, Lester/Hamels seems like the most likely scenario to me as well. The question is, what do the Phillies want for Hamels? They've constantly been reluctant to deal any of their guys. It might require the Red Sox to pick up a salary dump player in the process. Ranaudo + Eduardo for Hamels/Papelbon? Eduardo + Ball for Hamels/Burnett ? I have no idea.
  20. The Red Sox claim that they want to be competitive in 2015. They need atleast two more top pitchers to do that. You can get one via trade, but giving up prospects for two top pitchers is going to hurt, so they will likely get one via free agency. Who's out there? The best guys are Scherzer, Lester, Shields, Beckett, Peavy. Scherzer will cost twice as much as Lester. Shields will cost a ton, at a higher age. Beckett no. Peavy isn't an AL East pitcher. The next group consists of dumpster dives with Brandon McCarthy, Justin Masterson, Wandy Rodriguez, Josh Johnson, Gavin Floyd, Josh Johnson Jorge De La Rosa. None of those guys have been good and healthy this year.
  21. This snippet came out today. Lying out of his teeth.
  22. Pablo always seems overrated to me. Could he consistently stay around .800 OPS in Fenway?
  23. Lester should be Red Sox target #1. If you look at the pitching options and prices, durability, team compatibility, low prospect cost etc, Lester makes the most sense. I want Lester. The team wants Lester. Lester wants to be back. If they're spending big money on a free agent, I see no better option, unless Hanley or Scherzer somehow go for less money. I don't think we should compare Hamels to Lester, for all of the reasons I mentioned above. However, a Hamels-Lester led rotation is probably the best option for this team. Imagine those guys in the playoffs -- they'll one-up eachother to the World Series with those playoff numbers. Hamels is expensive and old enough that he's probably available. Maybe the Red Sox could get him for Eduardo, Escobar, + 1 -- that barely scratches the farm system.
  24. Firstly, there is no working around Craig. They bought low on him, they're not going to turn around and try to dump his contract. Napoli has been extremely productive so it seems silly to deal him. Secondly, just because they have money doesn't mean they're going to spend like drunken sailors. Why sign Scherzer when you can get Hamels for half the price? It might cost 2-3 good prospects, but are 2-3 good prospects worth 100 million? I doubt it. This team's management likes to spend money... but on the right players, on their terms.
  25. It seems extremely unlikely to me now. They just traded very valuable pieces for Cespedes and Craig, so I believe they intend to start them. The Marlins also seem to think they're almost ready to contend. Stanton is a 2015 offseason target, not a 2014 target. Also, the Red Sox are not going to get two of Lester/Scherzer/Shields, so I think most of the expendable trade chips are going out in a pitcher trade. Namely, 2014 Cy Young Johnny Cueto.
