  1. It seems like there is heat on a few teams for pitching... Padres: Tyson Ross/Ian Kennedy Reds : Latos/Simon/Leake Phillies : Hamels Nats : Zimmerman/Fister Tigers: Price I can't remember when so many options were dangling like this.
  2. Another one of these hot shot twitters is saying Cespedes for Latos. Wonder if its true.
  3. Huh. Well there goes that.
  4. I've just been reading Jake Wesley's twitter. His source is the one who broke the Pablo and Hanley signings. Its really strange, but the 14 year old kid's source is giving him good information.
  5. New report coming in that the Red Sox upped their offer to Lester to 145 million. If that isn't enough for him, he's breaking Sabathia's record.
  6. This team just signed a guy for 100 million bucks has a platoon split against lefties of .563. They may very well find a place for both.
  7. I heard Headley was asking for 5 years. I was surprised to find that his agent is Hendricks. Trying to pull a Boras move doesn't usually work for the small time shops, this will bite Headley in the ass.
  8. Absolutely. I am rationalizing this, and will continue to do so, despite disliking the contract:p Honestly, besides the weight issues, he seems like a safe bet. When you look for players to give long contracts, it is important to look at health history, age, consistency, and personality/PR. His split against lefties is concerning, but worst case scenario, you get someone in to platoon with him in a few years. I would be more concerned about his decline if not for the circumstances. He lost 45 pounds in the offseason, and ended up slumping in April while adjusting.
  9. Fortunately, the Red Sox haven't been trading away prospects. They're spending big money, but that's it.
  10. The more I think about it that way, the more I am okay with the Sandoval move. He's a World Series mvp that everyone has heard of, and will sell tickets. The Panda thing is cute, and may very well help start building the next generation of fans. As fans, we shouldn't care about how they spend their money, so if they spend money in a way that is going to make them money short term and long term, why not? On the baseball side, he is a clubhouse presence that will hopefully help with the foundation after Ortiz leaves. He's old 28 years old, has a history of solid health in the majors. If Fenway, and the improved lineup makes him a .800 hitter, it might not be so bad. I am also dreaming of a playoff push that includes Lester and three World Series MVPs in Hamels, Ortiz, and Sandoval.
  11. The current report is 130. I think Lester would eat the extra dollars to stay here.
  12. Something happened to him. Maybe pitchers finally caught up to him, but after 2011, there is a sharp downward trend, even in the minors. I'm not blaming the actual position change for his issues, I'm blaming the wear and tear of catching for his power failure. After 2011, his SLG drops from .600ish to .400ish. 2010 A-AA: .889 OPS 2011 AA: .869 OPS 2011 AAA: 1.002 OPS 2012 AAA: .815 2013 AAA: .696 2014 AAA: .759
  13. Lavarnway seems like exactly the kind of player that will disappear into another organization for a few years, and turn into the next Vmart. He absolutely mashed in the minors for a few years there, but juggling catching and first base messed with his development.
  14. San Fran also has a significantly larger cost of living. He also figures his numbers are going to be much better in Boston. He also probably hates the Yankees.
  15. Might as well look at career numbers. Coors Field: .779 OPS Petco: .842 At&T: .842 OPS Dodger's Stadium .724 Chase Field: .913 Most of these are roughly 50-70 game samples, so the numbers could be skewed based on a lot of different factors, but there is some correlation here.
  16. Hey User (or SFF if you're around). You generated spray charts for Fenway in the past, right? How do you usually overlay that data? I am looking at Pablo's chart at fangraphs, and it looks like he's got an absolute ton of flyouts that would be around the monster, but he also looks like he might be losing some home runs too.
  17. He deserves to retire as a Red Sox. What a great career, ended a bit too short by injuries. I hope his family enjoyed the year in Japan.
  18. If anything, the Red Sox might have to throw in a mid level prospect to make up for the qualifying offer, but no one at a Betts/Bogaerts level. We're talking a Lavarnway/Britton type prospect at best.
  19. A couple years ago, that was the case, but the trade value of quality hitters are going up, and so is the value of top prospects. David Price didn't get the haul everyone expected, and neither did Lester or Lackey. I mentioned this earlier, but Cespedes could get anywhere from 60-100 million in free agency, and a #2 pitcher is getting 60-100 million in free agency. I see no reason why this doesn't show similarity in value.
  20. I would imagine that this organization prefers to spend 200 million on a winning team over 150 million on a losing one. One report coming in is saying that the Red Sox are giving a Lester a day or two to consider their offers, and then they're moving on to Scherzer.
  21. I just don't understand how Cespedes is so lowly valued here. He was in the top 3 for both gold glove and a fielders bible award, so popular and sabremetric opinion alike appreciated his defense in left.. He also has a 25 HR bat. I get that he might be a pain in the ass, but so are a lot of players. If the Red Sox were trying to get a 25 HR bat with solid defense it would cost atleast one or two top prospects, so why is the case different here? Some pundits have suggested a Cespedes trade with the Reds for Leake/Latos/Simon or with the Nats for Zimmerman/Fister. Although Zimmerman might take an extra piece to make it happen, these guys all seem like they are heading for 60-80 million dollar contracts in 2015.
  22. Cafardo seems to think the Red Sox have 40 million left under the luxury tax.
  23. Two different sources came out today saying the Red Sox are getting close on a Lester deal. Not today, but eventually. Wesley -- the leak from the Pablo/Hanley stories-- has a source saying the Red Sox have expressed willness to move their offer up to 140 million
  24. If that's true, I will gladly eat my words.
  25. Ofcourse they are. The Phillies are completely unwilling to eat any of the contract, and want 3 bluechippers. Who else has those kind of resources? Cubs or Red Sox, and the Cubs have spent too much time building their farm to burn it down for a 31 year old.
