  1. He had an absolutely terrible 2014, but so did Masterson. He's a groundball pitcher, usually gets you innings, and probably won't cost any talent, just money. He's not a top of the rotation guy, but he might be cheaper than some of the other backend options.
  2. Miguel Montero reportedly going to the Cubs. With the Diamondbacks flailing, I wonder if they have any pitching to spare. Trevor Cahill is an interesting flyer -- anyone know if he's healthy, or what happened there?
  3. Ben has been shopping Cespedes for pitching all season, and the Reds like him. Latos only has a year left as well, so I would imagine it would be Cespedes, and maybe a pitching prospect thrown in to offset the difference in qualifying offers.
  4. Looks like Chris Sale is off the table.
  5. Choice quote from Buster Olney
  6. I looked at the list, and they're more common than I could remember. Adrian Beltre, Matt Holliday, Jayson Werth, Jared Weaver are all looking pretty good right now.
  7. If the Sox can get Shields around 4/80, that might be worth it. I'd be afraid of him asking for 5/120 or something that doesn't make sense for a 33 year old.
  8. Ben Cherrington saying that he has pursued 15-20 different pitchers. Say what you will, but the guy definitely covers his options.
  9. They're pretty close to the luxury cap already at -- what I've read to be -- 181 million. They still need a backup catcher, that's 3-4 million. Maybe another reliever, 3-5 million more. That'll get them to the 220 or 230s, and lock them into the luxury tax for several years. If they trade Betts, they can't pare payroll by trading Vic/Cespedes/Craig. I don't see that happening.
  10. Rosenthal reporting that the Red Sox are out on Lester. Apparently John Henry didn't open the checkbook... yet. edit: Peter Abraham reporting Red Sox 'Absolutely not out" of the running.
  11. The Red Sox can't afford both, and especially not if it takes the only cheap outfielder on the roster. If they want to make payroll space, it will be Victorino, Cespedes or both. They can probably afford 1 big money arm, plus a 10 million dollar type arm like Latos/Porcello/Zimmerman.
  12. Is it just me, or does that seem dumb? Unless Lester doesn't want to come back, it just doesn't make sense. 120 for Hamels or 140-160 million for Lester + Betts? Seems like a no-brainer to me. I wouldn't trade Betts unless he is bringing back Sale, or Harvey. Good AND cheap.
  13. If I disappear from Talksox for a few weeks, there will be a good reason why.
  14. Ben has been shopping Cespedes to a variety of teams. He's looking for a #2, and Ian Kennedy is a #4. Doubt this one will happen.
  15. It always seems like Lester really has no relationship with John Henry. I wish he had brought Pedroia and Ortiz with him.
  16. Scherzer hasn't been getting much attention this offseason. He's not that much better than Lester, and costs the draft pick, and probably an extra year. Scherzer isn't a sexy signing. He isn't a guy who has been known in the league for years, he's physically unattractive, and doesn't sound like he has any intangible value like leadership or playoff awards. Hell, most fans probably can't pronounce his name, and he doesn't have any fun nicknames that I am aware of. I don't see him being a guy that young teams like the Cubs will want to build their franchise around -- he's a complimentary piece on a team that already has starpower. That being said, he'll get his 150-170 million, but not that much more than Lester.
  17. I know I always talk about this.... but sports owners are obsessed with Florida. These billionaire owners don't understand exactly how oversaturated the state is with sports, want to build a nice stadium to retire in -- usually on taxpayer money -- and they bring in dozens of fans every game. 3 NFL teams, 2 MLB teams, 2 NBA teams, a NHL team, top college teams, a top tennis event, top golf courses. And guess what? They get an MLS team in Orlando in 2015. As if that was going to be successful.
  18. How hard do you think it will be to replace Jake Peavy's 4.72 ERA last year? Felix's Doubront's 6.02 ERA? Buchholz's 5.42 ERA? The challenge will be replacing the production of Lester and Lackey, not the back end guys. If they sign Lester/Scherzer, trade for a #2, and find a good starter out of the prospects, this team will be fine.
  19. The Giant strategy has been to resign all of their own guys for whatever those guys ask for. It has worked so far, but considering Matt Cain wasn't even pitching during their World Series run, I'd imagine most of their success has come from drafting elite pitching year after year.
  20. Players frequently put ads in the paper after signing elsewhere. I can't remember of players to do it after trades, but the Red Sox haven't traded many franchise players lately, besides Beckett, Manny, and Nomar.
  21. Yankees just got Miller. 4/36. I've said plenty on Andrew Miller, but that seems like a ton of money to pay for him.
  22. I've been arguing for him as a #1 for years, and that's why I'll be pissed if he signs elsewhere.
  23. There are plenty of options available, but most of them will do significant damage to the farm system, and most of them will go to free agency next year looking for a contract roughly around what Lester receives. Even if they go for Shields, the Red Sox are looking like they will go into the 2015 draft without any international signings at all, and no draft picks between the 2nd and 4th rounds.
  24. Come on now, are you saying that fans/media have a more valid opinion than the people who vote for these awards? MLB Managers and coaches are the ones who vote for the gold glove, and statistical analysis is how the Fielding Bible award is awarded. I prefer the combination of real managers and coaches AND statisticians over your eye test.
  25. There will be no excuses for not re-signing Lester. They had their chance last offseason, and they had their chance two weeks ago before the Dodgers and Yankees got involved.
