  1. Pablo lost 42 pounds last offseason. His power went way down. He gained the weight back, and his power went up again. It seems like it isn't a lack of trying, it just seems like his optimal performance comes from being bulky. The Panda hats are probably a big part of why they spent stupid money on him -- marketability.
  2. The Red Sox organization just doesn't have time to wait for projects unless they have very high ceilings. RDLR had his chance this year. He started off very well, but it seemed like he never made the adjustments. I would not be surprised to see him do very well next year. Webster got shelled every time he went out. He seems like a AAAA player, but I'm no scout.
  3. You don't play "Pick 5" with pitchers in their 30s who already will cost 100M+. The last time the Red Sox played that game, it was for cost-controlled Felix Hernandez.
  4. One reporter commented that the Phillies have lost a lot of leverage on Hamels this week. The Red Sox, Cubs, and Dodgers all filled holes in their rotation, and the Phillies have made it clear that they are selling because of the Rollins trade. It would be great to see the Red Sox pull him in -- I wonder if Cecchini still has enough value to headline that kind of deal.
  5. In all fairness, Cespedes has a career .667 OPS against Boston.
  6. You're not the only one upset about the Lester situation, or how this team does things. Somehow, this team got better pieces at the deadline by trading Peavy and Miller than they did from Lester and Lackey, and I have no idea how that happened. There are too many baseball decisions made by people who clearly know nothing about baseball. Alcohol is great. I just don't think an organization should depend solely on it for profits, unless its a brewery. I also found Wrigley field to be extremely underwhelming.
  7. My favorite player just left the Red Sox organization after the Red Sox screwed him twice over. I have worn my Lester jersey every one of his starts since 2008. He will end up making more over the course of his contract than the Red Sox spent in 2014. It sucks, but they know what they're doing. Ben makes smart moves that makes the team successful, filling holes and figuring out how to build the team, and Loopy Larry makes the stupid promotions and signs the big name players that bring in fans to pay for Ben's moves. It is not a perfect system, but it has been successful as recently as last year. Hell, the Cubs have been selling tickets using a very effective marketing tool called alcohol. I'm really not sure how much of an upgrade that is.
  8. Worst case scenario, you get a consolation draft pick next year. You were not getting that with Cespedes.
  9. Somehow, the Red Sox have spent 200 million on hitting, and only 20 million on pitching. There is another piece coming, but this was a very good start.
  10. Well, your optimism didn't last long
  11. If the Red Sox get an ace, what does this team look like? Deep rotation that gives innnings, solid bullpen, good defense, insane offense, great bench. Most of the team is young and heading into prime years. There will definitely be some question marks, but it feels like the Red Sox are getting close.
  12. He was a first round draft pick, so it isn't as if the talent isn't there. He's also only 26, so he's heading into his prime, rather than out of it.
  13. That was his media response after trading Lester and Lackey, simply because there weren't any top pitchers on the team.
  14. Josh Johnson got 8 million last year, Masterson 9 million. I would argue Buchholz is worth slightly more because of the team options and ceiling, but yeah, he won't return much in a trade.
  15. One pitcher for one season? Ben has just added three groundball pitchers. Masterson was second in the majors last year in GB%. Miley was 17th. Porcello was 25th. Maybe they go and add #3, Tyson Ross. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a plan here.
  16. Buchholz currently costs a 12 million contract. If he was a free agent, he'd probably get a 8-12 million contract. I think teams might be interested in eating the contract, but won't give up any value for him.
  17. Buchholz, Kelly, Miley, Masterson and Porcello will make less money combined this year than Lester's signing bonus.
  18. The reason I suggest trading Bogaerts is that the Red Sox have stocked up on a brick ton of groundball hitters today. Getting an elite defensive shortstop in there would probably help significantly with run prevention. I wonder if the Tigers would sell low on Iggy?
  19. What did they put in the coffee in the Winter Meetings? The 36 hours after Lester signed, teams have probably made 20-30 big trades/signings.
  20. Marlins deal for Latos is almost done. Down two starting pitchers already, these guys surely can't be going for it in 2015 -- Cueto and Leake must be in play.
  21. I'm surprised to see Cecchini and WMB stick around so long. They seem like the prospects most likely to be traded
  22. I think it would be hilarious to see a Hamels for Bogaerts trade, followed by a Stephen Drew signing.
  23. Previously, Ben said no moves were going to happen in the winter meetings at all, and they just had laid out the groundwork for a few deals. You can't trust everything you hear this time of the year.
  24. Ben supposedly working on another deal. The Reds just traded Simon, and the Marlins are working on Latos. Maybe the Reds are blowing it up, and Cueto is available?
  25. I would be very surprised to see the Red Sox trade for 4 starters this offseason. They probably will get another #2, and then go for another at the deadline.
