  1. The problem never seems to be money, the problem is usually years. I'm surprised teams don't heavily frontload these deals in order to pay players what they would actually be worth, ie 35/35/25/15/10/10. They'd lose a few million from inflation, but atleast they would be paying players for what they are worth on a given year, and it would make trading them much easier.
  2. The Nationals are looking for franchise changing young talent. They asked Seattle for Walker. It would take Betts or Xander, and I doubt that would be worth it unless the Red Sox trade and sign Zimmerman immediately.
  3. That age nudged slowly higher today with the signing of 36 year old Chris Capuano. Is he really worth 5 mill?
  4. That's just an extra 15 million for a guy a year younger than Lester. I don't consider it completely out of the question.
  5. I have said this before, but I am not so sure about Scherzer getting 200M because he isn't marketable. His numbers may sell tickets, but his face certainly won't. Few fans will even be able to pronounce his name for the first year. His playoff numbers have been up and down, landing at a respectable, but not stellar 3.73. He has a fraction of the twitter followers of guys like Lester, Price, Verlander. I know is a stupid way of gauging his marketability, but I just don't believe he brings fans to the stadium. If you don't believe me, ask yourself how many ridiculous Panda hats the Red Sox will be selling this year. If Scherzer can be had for 150-160, I think the Red Sox should be there.
  6. The question is, who will pay for Scherzer and Shields? Are the Yankees willing to spend near A-Rod money for either guy? The current report I've read is that they will be smart and wait for the big wave of pitchers next year -- they certainly seem like they want to go into rebuild mode for a season-ish. The Dodgers have already signed two pitchers this offseason. The Cubs and White Sox already put their money down. The Angels are already loaded with bad contracts, so are the Phillies. The only teams that make sense here are the Giants, Red Sox, Yankeea, Washington and maybe a dark horse like Toronto/NYM.
  7. We've heard reports that the Phillies are looking for two top prospects for Hamels, and for the other team to pay for the full contract. That's never going to happen. The Cubs and White Sox just spent a ton of money. The Dodgers and Yankees seem like they are much more willing to give up money than talent. I seriously doubt the Phillies are going to find much better than a former #2 prospect in all of baseball, even if they do eat 20-30 million.
  8. This team needs another top pitcher, and I still think improving the infield defense at SS needs to be a priority with all the groundballers. Trading Bogaerts for Hamels could come back and bite this team, but if you get the Phillies to eat 20-30 million to make the trade, and get Hamels for 70 million/90 million vested, that saves payroll space for the big wave of pitching coming next year. Bogaerts for Hamels straight up makes zero sense unless they sweeten the pot.
  9. Ortiz has been bitching about his contract his whole career, but when he gets to the hall of fame after a career of walk-years, he should thank the Red Sox.
  10. Jed Lowrie went for 3/20 to the Astros. What a steal.
  11. I consider that more high-end, but they are excellent. I wish I could go more, but the 5 hour wait is brutal.
  12. Price and Felix have both pitched in ideal environments as well. I am not going to argue that Shields is better than them, but that doesn't mean he isn't a top 5 pitcher in the AL. I would put him ahead of Darvish because he has pitched significantly more innings than Darvish -- We're talking an extra 52 IP a year.
  13. I never understand how Boston got the label of a seafood town. It has a few excellent high-end restaurants, but the city pales in comparison to most port towns in New England.
  14. Out of curiosity, what are they?
  15. I don't understand why Headley insisted so much on a long term deal -- he seemed perfect for a pillow contract in a hitter's park, and a 100 million dollar contract in 2015. Maybe he's worried about his own health.
  16. There are plenty of pitchers who have productive careers through their late 30s. Kuroda, Hudson, Schilling, Pettite, Mussina come to mind. Chris Carpenter had some rough years in the middle, but he pitched well through 37. These are all anecdotes, but it seems to me that high end pitchers do last a bit longer in the MLB.
  17. I am starting to wonder why I was against a Shields signing in the first place. If he was 3 years younger, he'd be a 200 million dollar bet, so why is 110 million so much ? Age is the only red flag here, he has been an healthy horse in the AL East his whole career. Cueto has had so many health issues over the last few years and has only broken the 180 IP mark twice.
  18. Over the last 4 years, Shields has averaged 233 IP, a 3.17 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in the AL. That's 1st in IP, 5th for ERA, 6th in WAR, 5th in Wins, 8th in WHIP over that span. Most of those numbers are better than Verlander's, Darvish's, Scherzer's and Lester's. Very similar to Price/Felix, except those guys had slightly better ERA/WHIP over fewer innings. He has been worlds better than real #2s like Anibel Sanchez, Josh Beckett, John Lackey. Shields is a #1 pitcher. That shouldn't be questioned. The question is whether he will still be an ace into his mid and late 30s.
  19. I pretty much always go to the second game of the season every year. Not quite the same thrill, but it ends up being a fraction of the price, and its still has most of the effect.
  20. If I were any of the big teams, I wouldn't hesitate giving up another 16 million contract this year. Hell, the Red Sox should be after him.
  21. I just bought some tickets too. The fees have gone way way way up. I usually buy cheap tickets in April and move around. $20 worth of tickets cost $36 dollars after fees. How does that work?
  22. Is Kuroda considering coming back? It seems like he is the most irreplaceable player on the Yanks. The only guys available out there that can give you 200 IP in the 3.00 ERAs are Shields and Scherzer.
  23. Lester spent years trying to get the #1 title, and somehow a guy who has a career 118 ERA+ and has never broken 160 innings gets the title from all of baseball. Cobb is a #2/3 at best.
  24. You mean besides putting up a 1.74 ERA just last year?
  25. The Red Sox have a protected first rounder, but they also don't want to obliterate their farm system either. Remember, they already lost two second round picks this year. They also overspent on the international draft this year, and will completely miss out on that draft.
