  1. Back to baseball... what's the deal with Cliff Lee? Is he more likely to be on his way to TJS or the All star game? I haven't heard rumors around him at all, and nothing on his health. We keep talking about Hamels, but a healthy Cliff Lee seems like a much better fit. His contract is shorter at a higher AAV, meaning the Phillies would probably prefer to get rid of him while they're rebuilding. He's older, but AL proven.
  2. Banuelos traded for Carpenter. So much for the killer B's, only Betances left.
  3. Sounds like the Yanks are going after Scherzer. Bummer.
  4. There is also Latos, Fister, Gallardo, Iwakuma, Samardizija, Leake, Ian Kennedy, Lincecum. Greinke will likely opt out of his contract, so he may be available.
  5. Vazquez seemed like he always got a big hit with runners on base. I looked it up -- he had a .733 OPS with runners on, .773 with RISP, .872 with RISP and 2 outs, and 1.250 with the bases loaded. I'm fine with him being in the 9 spot if he makes the staff better.
  6. Porcello is 25 years old, and has thrown 1073 IP, and has 73 wins to a 4.30 ERA. Capuano at age 25 had only thrown 121 IP and had 8 wins to a 4.90 ERA. The age is such a massive part of this. 25 year old baseball players are usually still in AAA. Porcello's value is in upward projection. Pitchers in their mid to late 20s start hitting their prime, whereas pitchers in their mid to late 30s start looking toward retirement.
  7. Dell has been screwed in the whole process. First she loses her NESN gig over her relationship, and then she gets a job with CBS as a sideline reporter, and he gets traded to San Diego.
  8. You will see one stellar year from Pineda/Tanaka, and one out for the season. Sabathia's career looks like it is on its way out, and Eovaldi won't turn into the pitcher you want him to be immediately. Kuroda seems like the big difference maker for this team. He takes pressure off the rookies, Nova, and Capuano without breaking the bank. I imagine he is a must-sign right now.
  9. Tanaka had three good months, that hardly grants him ace status, but that isn't the point. In 2009, the Red Sox signed Lackey to be their #3 for 5/80, for ages 31-36. I see no reason why they shouldn't get Porcello to be a #3 for 5/100 at ages 26-30.
  10. If you can get a #2 for his age 25-30 seasons at 100 million, that seems like good value. Look at Tanaka, he got stupid money and has more red flags.
  11. It makes me wonder if signing Porcello to a long term contract ASAP makes sense. The guy is 25. Sign him for 6 years, and he comes out at 31. If he turns out to be a #2 pitcher, it could be a bargain.
  12. If you ever see Hammel's name, just assume we're talking about Cole. Jason isn't in play anymore, and he isn't an ace.
  13. Congrats. Did they come in rapid succession? I swear, it was only recently you were talking about the first.
  14. Both have their pros and cons. Cueto has been very injury prone, but he has a 2.48 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP over the last 4 years. That's second only to Kershaw in both categories.
  15. I am comparing 2014 Tigers to 2015 Red Sox. That is how we can see a place for improvement in Porcello, due to defense. All things considered, three defensive positions are better, one is slightly worse. The outfield also looks much better. Seems pretty clean cut to me.
  16. There has been some talk of a Hamels for Wil Myers trade. That'd be hilarious. Hell, maybe Scherzer to San Diego makes sense.
  17. There has never been a year like this. Most of these guys are teams that can't afford to re-sign them -- too many of them have had their names floated out there in trade rumors. Whenever teams plan to re-sign a guy, there is a bunch of reports of teams checking in, and getting rebuffed. With guys like Price, Cueto, Zimmerman, they are very available, but no one wants to pay that price yet.
  18. It will be interesting to see what happens. They have a fanbase that doesn't know what it is like to be losers. They survived the last two years on Rivera/Jeter retirement schemes, but the only big news story now is the black mark Arod puts on the organization.
  19. Sandoval/Castellanos: Strongly favors Red Sox Pedroia/Kinsler: Strongly favors Red Sox Napoli/Cabrera: Strongly favors Red Sox Vaquez/Avila: About even? Hard to gauge this one. Xander/Romine: Slightly Favors Detroit (UZR says it is a wash, but whatever) The Red Sox have three players significantly better defensively, and one player slightly worse. That's not including the outfield. I'm not really sure how you think the defense is comparable.
  20. The problem is that you'd be paying for his age 33, 34, 35, 36, and 37 seasons. That wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't a gigantic pile of top pitchers available next year. headlined by Zimmerman, Price, Cueto. Why pay 110 for Shields this year, if one of those other guys might be available for 140 next year?
  21. Without looking it up, can you tell me who played the majority of the games in SS for Detroit? I honestly have no idea.
  22. The 2015 Tigers will probably improve their defense significantly year-over-year, but last year they were terrible. Hunter was bad, Iglesias only played 46 games, Castellanos was terrible, Miggy was bad. Kinsler and Avila were the only plus defenders on the entire team.
  23. When the Dodgers reached out to the Red Sox about the Agon/Crawford trade, I would not be surprised if they also reached out for a Hamels/Howard trade. Amaro doesn't have the balls to make the moves Ben does.
  24. Talksox would be killing Ben. Pure vitriol. Amaro is possibly one of the worst execs in baseball right now. Bad team, bad contracts, bad farm system, and a complete reluctance to do anything about it. That team is a disaster right now.
  25. They are going to wait until one of their current catchers gets hurt, or starts being ineffective. There are enough good qualities in the Vazquez/Hannigan that I doubt they'll rush another young prospect here.
