  1. iortiz, please read this and gain some humility. You were calling the 2013 Red Sox a 4th place team because of the pitching, just as you are now. Trust in Ben. And as always, I am willing to eat the humble pie myself. Many of those posts are about Shaun Marcum, a guy I thought would be a key signing in 2013. D'oh!
  2. As we look toward the 2015-16 free agent class, I find myself wondering: Why? Scherzer seems like just as good an option as Price, Cueto, Zimmerman, Greinke. ERA+, arm mileage and injury history all seem to point to Scherzer as one of the best of the group. Cueto is the only better arm, but his injury history is concerning. Here's the thing: no one seems to be in on Scherzer. Will you be able to say that about the options in 2015? Scherzer will cost the Red Sox a 3rd rounder, whereas the other guys may cost a 1st rounder next year. If the Red Sox trade for them midseason, they may cost even more -- guys like Swihart/ Betts/ Owens.
  3. The Sox claimed Francisco before the Sandoval acquisition. He looked like a very good platoon option at the time, but with all the groundball acquisitions he wouldn't make sense anymore.
  4. I get that, but the trades he has made have been awful. The Donaldson trade may have been the worst trade all offseason, and after selling the farm for Samardzija, they only received mid-tier pieces back for him.
  5. Oakland traded their #1 prospect to the Rays for Ben Zobrist. I know Zobrist is good, but what on earth is Beane trying to do? That's an all-in move. You don't make all-in moves after losing Samardzija, Donaldson, Lester, Lowrie and others.
  6. Another very interesting name is Ogando. He had elbow troubles last year and pitched very poorly, so the Red Sox need to vet him, but his numbers are very good. He has experience both as a starter and late inning reliever. He had a 3.40 ERA as a starter in 2011/2013. For his career, he had a 3.12 ERA (140 ERA+) before last year's aberration in Texas. When healthy, he has #2 starter or 8th inning potential.
  7. The dreaded Dojji kiss of death. Come on man, did you really have to jinx that one?
  8. I am still holding out hope. Besides Lester, none of the top tier guys have moved and this team looks one starter away. They could clear some payroll from Buchholz. I am also surprised that the outfield jam hasn't been completely resolved yet-- Craig, Nava and Vic are all still rostered and none are starters.
  9. "Cardinals Exploring Top-End Starter Acquisition" Red Sox fans must be jealous of that headline.
  10. Baseball brawls are hilarious, because they always give the impression that the players have no idea how to fight.
  11. Interesting. I am looking at his numbers based on pitch counts, and they seem to give me the impression of the opposite. Later in the game, he's a bit better than career average. This includes both starting and relieving stats, which theoretically should make pitches 1-30 look better. Pitches 76-90 --> .646 OPS against Pitches 91-105 --> .612 OPS against Pitches 106-120 --> .417 OPS against Career --> .635 OPS against. Edit: On a closer look, it appears you're right. In 2012/2013, he was much better in early pitch counts. In 2014, he improved his results at the ends of games, which seems to bode well here.
  12. Everyone knows 2013 was just dumb luck. Its been 8 years since the Red Sox earned one.
  13. Drew helped the Sox win a ring, and posted a 3.4 WAR as recently as 2013. I'm still hoping he turns his year around, although I would prefer if any of his success comes in blowout games where it doesn't affect the outcome of any games.
  14. Pedro's reaction is here: http://m.redsox.mlb.com/bos/video/v37109729/pedro-martinez-receives-hall-of-fame-call/?adbid=10152556606216766&adbpl=fb&adbpr=39399781765&partnerId=as_mlb_20150106_38360757
  15. 91.1 percent of voters elected Pedro Martinez for the hall of fame. In other news, 8.9 percent of baseball hall of fame voters deserve to be fired. Pedro is the man. Big congrats from all of us at Talksox. Here's a pretty neat chart from bRef : http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/hof_2015.shtml
  16. Olney's stuff is usually premium, so I haven't seen it. I read the snippet on MLBTraderumors.
  17. Shields is a legit ace. People have been overlooking those numbers, but over the last four years he's led the league in innings, and been in the top 5 or 10 in other major categories. 3.17 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 233 Innings. The real problem is age, unless the Sox see value in picking up a veteran with World Series experience to lead a staff of 20-somethings and the current group of prospects.
  18. I also find it interesting that a report is coming out saying that "the Red Sox are out on Shields", as if they were "in on Shields" until today.
  19. We hear absolutely no one in on Shields, and a mystery team comes along with an offer he should probably accept. Unless that team is the Astros, I don't believe it.
  20. This point came up a few times when discussing who Cespedes would pull back in trade talks. Surprisingly, there have been several quality bats available this offseason -- Nelson Cruz, Hanley, Donaldson, Justin Upton, Vmart, Cespedes, Kemp, Pablo, Ethier, Myers. That seems like a respectable group.
  21. The whole point of this topic is that what is "on paper" isn't as good as what the result will be. The argument I keep seeing is that 3's and 4's are not going to win a championship. in 2011, the Red Sox's rotation was filled with guys that would be #8/9/10 on the depth of championship teams. Bedard averaged 3 IP per start. Weiland had a 7.66 ERA, Miller 5.54, Lackey 6.44, Wakefield 5.12. The #3-5 starters could be pulled in the 3rd with 6-8 runs on any given night. As much as you dislike the current rotation, this group is not even remotely that terrible.
  22. No. That title goes to 2011, and I seriously doubt it will even be close. You guys complain about all the #4s and 5s... that year half the rotation was #8s and 9s.
  23. Giants -- "We're out on Shields and Scherzer." Dodgers -- "We're out on Shields and Scherzer." Yankees -- "We're out on Shields and Scherzer." Detroit -- "We haven't talked to Scherzer in a few weeks, but the door is still open." Nationals -- "No one is talking about us, but we're considering trading Zimmerman and signing Scherzer." Red Sox -- "We're monitoring the pitching situation closely, but not engaged at this time." Padres -- "Booyaka." It is going to be an interesting few months.
  24. Woah, here is a big quote from Buster Olney. Huge news. More power to Ben, less to Loops.
  25. It looks to me like the Red Sox are done with the pen. Koji, Taz, Mujica, Workman, Layne, Breslow, Varvano make up the core, with the prospects making up the fringes.
