  1. The longer this goes on, the more likely the Red Sox sign an ace. The same thing happened with Drew last year, albeit with not so great results.
  2. Chicago is a massive market with a rabid fanbase. If they start winning, they can probably afford a payroll in the Yankee/Dodger tier. You have mentioned you don't like what he has done there so far, but that farm system is insane, and he just fleeced Ben for Lester, and Tampa for Maddon.
  3. I made a side trip to Milwaukee to see the Brewers face Kershaw last year. Miller Park isn't a bad place to spend a game, but it is designed for tailgating. That deal is insane though -- Could you imagine using it for 10 high cost games in 20 years? Game 7s, World Series games, opening day. It'd be worth it if they ever make it to the WS again.
  4. They nontendered Ogando, so he's around for the taking.
  5. Missing out on Matt Holiday and signing Mike Cameron the year prior was the big misplay. 7/120 for him was a steal, and it seemed like everyone knew it at the time. If he was hit by a bus and missed the next two years of that contract, he'd still be the best big contract in years.
  6. In hindsight, the right move would have been to trade Youkilis. Look at that season, .973 OPS. He ended the season hurt, but selling high on him would have been huge. You'd get gold glove defense at the corners, and a big haul for Youk. But then again, you'd miss out on Swihart and to a lessor extent Jackie Bradley without those Beltre draft picks. We won't really know how good a 2010 trade was for another 5 years haha.
  7. The other crazy thing is that in 2010 "a lot of injuries" was a few key players missing half a season each. Nowadays, a "a lot of injuries" is six or seven key players missing full seasons. What happened to the sport that has made everyone so much more injury prone?
  8. Speaking of scared rabbits, the Crawford situation was a fiasco. Remember how they hired a private investigator to follow Crawford around to figure out if he was worth the money or not? I hope we never see a contract that terrible again.
  9. Rosenthal reporting that current Shields discussions are under 100 million for teams that he actually wants to go to. A 4/90 deal with a vesting option seems almost reasonable -- he would end that contract at 36 years old. You get a big inning eater, a veteran presence in a rotation of 20-somethings, and a borderline ace at much less than Lester's contract. I hope they are still in on him.
  10. I once ran into Theo outside of Fenway a few offseasons back. He was in jogging clothes out for a run and I may have accidentally heckled him, just because I was excited to see him. Someday, I will figure out Ben's favorite bar, and we'll talk about how upsetting the Lester trade was, and how awesome 2013 was.
  11. By now, I think you have a pretty good understanding of how to push my buttons. I'm going to cool down, and agree to disagree on this one.
  12. I'm not trying to shift my initial point, just defending against your strawmen so let me get back to my initial point. If you saw a 1st basemen prospect putting up a .720 OPS for 3 years, you would be among the first ones asking for his head. Because of that, its completely unfair for you to then criticize the FO for trading him before the 4th year. They're damned if they trade, and damned if they don't trade. There is zero chance for them to win your favor.
  13. In investing, there is no such thing as a sure thing. Just yesterday, there was an article about how Warren Buffet's two prodigies were both beaten by the market. The Red Sox traded 3 prospects. Two were duds. One has had one elite season out of 4. In return, they received the most desired trade target available. A guy you were drooling over. Judging a trade by what you lose, without judging it by what you gain is just plain ridiculous.
  14. In hindsight, I would still trade Anthony Rizzo for Adrian Gonzalez. Every single time, I still make that trade. That is the same as if we'd be willing to trade Mookie straight up for Stanton. Ofcourse you say yes to that trade. Would I rather trade the duds? Absolutely. But you don't always have that information at the time.
  15. The new one is "building the next great Red Sox team".
  16. Good teams can't carry mediocre prospects for years waiting for them to develop. I don't think it is fair to criticize a team who traded away a prospect that is finally a star in his 4th year in the majors, despite bashing every single prospect who struggles.
  17. WMB is in San Diego. Jackie Bradley will start 2015 in AAA before being shipping out in a midseason trade. Lavarnway has been dumped by 4 different teams. Fan reaction isn't what I am talking about here. You'd be killing a 1B prospect hitting .720 with meh defense after 3 years.
  18. Rizzo took a long time to develop. If he were here, he may have been booed out of town before he had the chance. His first 3 seasons produced a .735 OPS at first base, an offense-first position. In two seasons, Bogaerts has a .670 OPS at a much more difficult position. In his three seasons, WMB has has a .695 OPS.
  19. Most of the top tier guys graduated. Xander, Mookie, Barnes, Ranaudo, Vazquez were the guys the bridge was supposed to connect. The last great Red Sox team, and the next great Red Sox team are both here together. Seems like as good a time as any to go for it.
  20. What difference would 2016 make over 2015? Ortiz, Pedroia, Koji will be one year older. Napoli's production will be hard to replace. They will need to replace Masterson/Porcello/Buchholz. Mookie and Xander are here already. There is nowhere for the bridge to go.
  21. 2015-2016 Price will probably have 200 more innings on his arm than 2014-2015 Scherzer. Price has had a better ERA/Whip over his career, but ERA+ numbers are similar. Both have been healthy. Near identical free agency ages. Price will cost a 1st round pick instead of a 3rd. He's also looking at roughly 40 million more. He's also kind of a dick. Why not go for it all now?
  22. I mentioned Ogando a few days ago, and he seems like a very versatile piece. In the past, he's put up an ERA in the mid 3.00s as a starter, and has also closed out games for Texas. If his elbow is healthy, he's a guy that will be very good in 2015.
  23. How so? The best records don't have to play any additional games. The only difference is that they might play a #5 seed instead of a #4 in the first round.
  24. It certainly doesn't sound like it. In 2012, he was given a pile of huge contracts for underachieving players, Bobby Valentine, and an empty farm system. He hasn't been perfect by any means, but every year he has retooled the team for the future. Let's see April --and the full roster -- before calling it complete junk.
  25. The Red Sox received a competitive balance pick (2nd round I think) in a trade, so they lost that one instead of a 3rd rounder.
