  1. I think Dumbo must be considering a starting pitching upgrade via free agency. The 2017 free agent crop for starters is extremely shallow.
  2. How is that evidence of folly? They're similar pitchers, and received similar contracts. St Louis is a great fit for Leake. It is somewhat close to his home in Arizona. The Cardinals are arguably the best run organization in baseball, they have a NL pitcher park. Low income tax. Better weather. It also takes more money to sign a player to a 60 win team than it does to sign a player to a 100 win team.
  3. I'm not convinced the Red Sox are done. They've spent too much to have so many holes in the rotation. I'm hoping for Kazmir or Cashner but it is more likely they look at high end reclaimation projects like Fister and Lee.
  4. It is amusing what lengths the miserables go to discredit a GM who won a World Series for their team.
  5. Eduardo Rodriguez, Brock Holt and Koji are the gems from Ben's time here. Porcello, Kelly and Brian Johnson may all still turn into solid contributors as well. He also traded junk for Wade Miley, who singlehanded pulled in a haul for the Sox. In all reality, the 2016 will win or lose based on the rotation Ben built last year.
  6. Generally my approach is that I'll avoid the BC debate for a few weeks then see the miserables still badmouthing him in every single post and I'll step back in. This isn't a debate that is going away any time soon unless the miserables stop baiting the rest of us.
  7. John Henry has stated many many times that he did not want to give out a long term contract to a pitcher. The only thing that convinced him otherwise was two losing seasons.
  8. I doubt this one will end any time soon. I'm see similar arguments going on in different Red Sox forums right now too.
  9. Right, because other GMS are perfect and don't ever make mistakes. Look at the Twins -- they've been trying to build a starting pitching staff on a budget for years, and it hasn't gone well for them either. If Ben had 250 million to spend on pitching in 2014 instead of 27 million, things would have gone differently.
  10. Yep, back to Seattle.
  11. You seem to see this in black and white... he either makes all of the decisions or none of them. What if John Henry/Larry Luchhino followed Ben most of the time, but sometimes had their own opinions on larger signings? One more time, that's how owners treat their businesses. There are certain moves that follow Ben/Theo's philosophies, and others that do not. There have been plenty of signings that seem like Ben believed he was smarter than everyone else and got burned. The Porcello extension may turn to be one of those signings.
  12. Iwakuma still has a draft pick attached. My guess is that this pulls him back to the Seattle.
  13. I've made this argument many times before. If you own a business, you have subordinates. When those subordinates are making smaller deals, and smaller transactions, they're not always worth your time. When it comes to spending large amounts of money, and making big deals, that is when you get involved. This is a reality in most businesses. Why does it seem so far-fetched in baseball?
  14. Here's something crazy. The Giants are giving Cueto a 5 million dollar bonus if he opts out in two years. So, if he wins the NL Cy Young in 2016/2017, the Giants then have to give him 5 million dollars as he walks out the door. Sounds like the Giants don't really want to pay Cueto into his later years of the deal.
  15. What an awful offseason for the Dodgers. Greinke, Chapman, Iwakuma have all gone badly for them, and none even seem like their fault. Meanwhile the Diamondbacks and Giants both added two strong starters.
  16. The Lackey trade was awful, but it seemed like there were other factors at play. Henry wouldn't pay Lester market value, and Lackey was pissed at the Red Sox for some reason.
  17. Every GM inherits a core. Unfortunately, Epstein hadn't drafted any decent pitching which has been the Red Sox's weakness. We need to see what happens with Erod, Porcelo, Kelly, Koji, and Johnson next year. Those are Ben acquisitions.
  18. I hear you, but we all get tired of the same old Ben arguments. When Theo was the GM, the Red Sox always made smart trades and small transactions but failed miserably at big contracts. When Ben was the GM, the Red Sox always made smart trades and small transactions but failed miserably at big contracts. I strongly believe that the billionaires are the ones who have made most of the big money decisions. Guys like Crawford and Pablo were not intelligent baseball decisions.
  19. And minor league teams don't win the World Series. It seems strange to me that all Dumbo had to do was spend 220 million on one arm, trade four significant prospects for Kimbrel, and wham, this team is looking like a contender. Its almost like the other 20 guys on the roster came from nowhere.
  20. July 4th, 2015. Clay Buchholz pitches a complete game and trims his ERA to a 3.27. The Red Sox are practically out of contention. Buchholz has 2.5 more years of control and many playoff teams were desperate for pitching. The next start, Buchholz injures himself. I will always wonder what GMs were willing to pay for Good-Buchholz before the deadline.
  21. The Red Sox re-signed Varvaro to a minor league deal. I'm surprised to see the Red Sox get a guy with a 2.85 ERA over the last 3 years as minor league depth, but it works for me.
  22. I figured teams would be fighting over him because he doesn't have compensation tagged to him. That being said, teams have already spent big on pitching, and Gallardo/Leake/Maeda/Chen/Kennedy are still out there.
  23. Fernandez would be great but I like the price of Kazmir or Cashner a lot better.
  24. 6/130 seemed very reasonable for Cueto. If you consider that he's a full year younger than Samardzija, he cost nearly the same, despite a full 1 run lower ERA.
  25. Cost, control, age, and Miller's recent injuries are factors here. The Dodgers don't seem willing to trade those top guys, and if they wanted to, wouldn't McGee be the better choice?
