I brought up the same points during this game. Pulling Price just seemed like a misplay, and Davis should have been okay for two innings. The only thing I could think of was that Yost knew about the weather and was trying to save Davis for after a delay.
The Jays got an affordable #3 in that deal. He's been around a 3.90 ERA with 210 IP each season since they acquired him.
The prospects worked out, but they don't always work out. Hopefully Dombrowski continues his hot streak of knowing the difference.
There probably hasn't been a better year to look for starting pitching out of free agency. There is enough talent available that they might be able to get a strong #2 like Gallardo/WY Chen for 60 million.
The problem is, where on earth are they going to find a strong #1 who doesn't hate David Ortiz?
I imagine the Nationals are probably going to go into a soft rebuild over the next few years. They might be competitive again in a few years, but would they rather keep Scherzer, or upgrade to someone younger with the 30M/Y when they are competitive again? The later years in these kinds of contracts always suck.
It seems likely that many of the team's new players had adjustment periods here.
Mookie had a .670 OPS through the first few months adjusting to major league pitching. Swihart struggled early as well.
Miley had a 8.00 ERA through April before he went back to his career averages.
Porcello moved away from his best pitch, and ended up getting shelled until recently. Who knows what he'll look like in 2016.
The Vazquez/Hannigan injuries probably didn't do the pitching staff any favors.
What about a Ryan Howard for Hanley Ramirez trade ? Throw in 10-20 million. Travis Shaw has a big split against LHP this year and plays as a defensive substitute, Howard has a big split against RHP.
I haven't seen too games lately, but can someone throw out some input on how Porcello's starts have looked?
His numbers across the 7 games since he came back from the DL have been excellent.
7+ IP, 2.97 ERA, 9 K/9, 1.204 WHIP. That includes a game against the Yanks, and two against the monstrous Blue Jays lineup.
It is September, the Sox are 14 games back on the division, and I'm watching anyway because I like the future of the team. Not exactly a fair assessment.
Thanks. I'll be lurking until things start calming down. This time of year, we see the same 5 discussions circling, so hopefully Dombrowski gives us something new to talk about soon.
Mark my words, in 2019 when Dombrowski and Dipoto get fired after winning a world series, but also have a couple losing seasons, I will flame the ever living s*** out of this board.
Ben's the man. May he have an excellent career with Theo in Chicago. Thanks for 2013.
Cueto, Price, Kazmir, Hamels, Latos already off the market.
Whose left? Shark, Shields, Leake, Gallardo. Who would be surprised if they went for Shields?
