  1. Yeah. I have plantar--run on it almost every day. orthotics keeps the arch rigid. Actually better after running. The other thing you can get from running is heel pain--which goes away in a few months with custom orthotics.
  2. http://bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox_mlb/boston_red_sox/2013/03/jackie_bradley_s_time_is_now Tomase says throw caution to the wind--for a change--and start Bradley right now in LF. He characterizes the Red Sox as too cautious lately. Just the word that reminds you of Cherington. This kid is the best player in spring training. The team needs a spark. It is dullsville. The hell with the extra FA year. It's about winning. He says the Angels wish they had Trout last April. They might have made the playoffs. Actually, Pujols' slow start was what killed them in April. Can you imagine these guys spending $170 million in payroll, and then worrying about extending a kid's control 7 years out?
  3. won't happen unless Drew gets hurt or is traded. Cardinals were interested in Drew pre-season, but I doubt they'll pay $9.5 mil for him to replace Furcal.
  4. Just read Myers is end of April. Thought Bradley would be the same. What is Bradley's date?
  5. Pressure building for Bradley to play LF, Gomes DH. But bringing him up the end of April adds another control season. More likely the priority.
  6. Watching these WBC games, these guys are playing like it was the ML playoffs. You wonder if it will take something out of them for the regular ML season.
  7. Yeah, they have really screwed the pooch the last couple years. From Henry on down. The media has been light on the higher ups, but they'll go after the FO this year if things don't get better. Tough to predict seasons--one way or another. Depends too much on injuries--serendipity.
  8. Too bad fat Andruw Jones couldn't score from 2B on Bogaerts' hit. He walked home on the deep sac fly.
  9. Simmons tied game in 8th with homer. This kid is the Braves starting SS and leadoff batter.
  10. Bogaerts impressive at bat in the 9th against Cuba--just on TV. Went with pitch-- soft liner to RF for a hit loading the bases. Set up game winning sac fly for Netherlands.
  11. neither was Hanley.
  12. Netherlands beats Cuba 7-6!
  13. Bogaerts gets a hit! Loading bases with 1 out. tie game bottom of 9th. I'd put this kid at SS in a minute. Give him a shot.
  14. thanks for the tip. watching it now.
  15. Texas? no problem. Lucchino has nightmares about Ortiz playing in Yankee pinstripes.
  16. Don't think a 37yo guy coming off a foot injury will get a 2 year deal on the open market. Star appeal in Boston got him the contract. He has thrown them a curve on his health.
  17. Wilbur's latest criticism focusses on Ortiz: http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/wilbur/2013/03/as_far_as_late-.html Does seem foolish for them to throw 2 years/$25 mil at Papi with uncertainty in his health. Maybe they bought Valentine's story that Papi just sat to protect his next contract, and that he was bound to come back OK. The team may have dug itself deeper throwing money at so many over 30 guys just to maybe stay respectable. Even for "short" term. After all, their own policy for years has been to avoid over 30 FAs. These guys are a bigger injury risk.
  18. Can't tell what the problem is from the info provided, except there's inflammation in both heels. I assume the guy's wearing orthotics. That's a must for anything like this. Doesn't sound like an achilles problem. Anybody with a strained arch or heel will feel some pain for a long time. Even a year. I know from experience. Runners' heel is common, and is treated with custom orthotics. Running on it is OK with an orthotic, but hitting is another matter. Once again, there isn't enough info being provided to make any judgements on what the problem is. They do say he can run on it without further damage, but that would say it isn't the achilles tendon.
  19. Too bad Ellsbury is such a slow starter. If he had a hot spring, and Bradley continues to look good , he might wind up getting traded. More likely that might happen after the start of the season. Bradley may get couple of months in AAA, like Middlebrooks did last year. There is a tendency these days to move hot prospects up the ladder with partial seasons in AA and AAA. Another trade possibility is Drew. The Cardinals could have some interest with Furcal down. They had interest in Drew pre-season, according to Cafardo. Iglesias would have to show some improvement in hitting for that to happen. Or maybe they would go with Siriaco and Holt until Bogaerts is ready. They have a lot of options at SS--more than some people think. The way the Red Sox spent their way back up to the cap pre-season, it makes you wonder if they didn't do some of that to justify high ticket prices and remain a big spending team.
  20. Judging ST performance is a slippery slope. What you see can be decieving. The hot hitters in ST can suddenly turn cold when they go north in April. The cold hitters can become hot. Happens all the time, and drives fantasy owners nuts. One problem is the mix of minor and major leaguers--some out of shape. To get a better handle of ST performance, some stat sites have begun evaluating ST performance according to the level of pitching or hitting the player has seen in ST games. If a prospect has done well against major leaguers, that counts more than if he has done well against mainly minor leaguers. The GMs have a handle on ST performance at this level, so they know the score on who is doing what. If a prospect is hitting or pitching well against primarily major leaguers, that's a boon to the player and his confidence. Confidence is everything for these kids trying to move up to the next level. It's what allows the ability to get through.
  21. I understand via tweets that Ortiz' medical diagnosis is unchanged over last fall: There is no risk of further injury if he plays, it's still sore, but hasn't gotten worse. The MRI is probably to assure that it hasn't gotten worse. I still have my doubts as to whether it's a real achilles injury or in the arch (plantar). I don't think you can play on a damaged achilles without risk of tearing it. Strained arches take forever to heal, but are manageable with an orthotic.
  22. Whatever questions about injuries in the lineup, it still boils down to the starting pitching, which will make or break this team. If Ortiz wants to play, he's going to have to play with pain--which should be managable for a DH. The medical staff said last fall he could have played without further injury risk. But is that true if it's an achilles? I thought originally it was a plantar (arch) problem--which you can play with easily using an orthotic. Plantars hurt for a long time--gradually pain goes away with an orthotic--takes over a year. Are we getting a straight story about what's really wrong with him? Having read about the deal that Hamilton turned down in Texas, I doubt Boston was ever in the mix. All that Fox TV money in LA is very enticing for FAs--and their agents.
  23. It don't mean a thing, 'cause it's only Spring.
  24. Grant respected Thomas, too. An older General, who I believe taught at West Point when Grant was a student there. But Thomas was a bit too slow and cautious for Grant at times. Grant has a lot of parallels with Eisenhower: Both were West Pointers who came to lead the Army during War (and indeed were important in winning their Wars). Both emerged from war and became immensely popular because of their leadership roles in the war. Both were easily elected President for two terms, and served admirably as President--in my view. Both were able to do things they couldn't have done without their considerable popular support. Along with a handful of others (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR), I regard them as among the greatest American leaders. I have always envied Eisenhower for his personality--he took after his mother, and resembled her the most of his 4 brothers.
  25. Ruby was throwing harder than that the last outing I saw on TV--96. But he was throwing lots of slow stuff, too. Too much--maybe working on his changeup. You can't tell by a single outing in ST on any pitcher. Heck, Kershaw has been lit up his first couple of appearances.
