  1. I think Aceves is too screwed up in the head to be of much value at this point. Baseball is a 50% head game, and his performance his first two appearances show he is a risk when he goes out there. Sure he might surprise, but the downside is he takes you out of a game early and kills the momentum they've built up. Same deal with Iggy, who has been a stalwart defensively and on the basepaths. Fact is , he's playing excellent team ball--using his speed offensively and defensively. Getting on base. solidifying the infield. The only thing you can say about Drew is that he is the money. But they could take a hit defensively which might be important. Iggy and Bradley have given the team an unexpected boost early. Look at the Celtics--had to have Rondo go down to realize he wasn't distributing the ball enough. Surprise.
  2. Read tonite the Red Sox have played 7 consecutive errorless games to start the season--a team record. One of the things clicking so far is defense, and Iggy has been a big part of that. Bradley, too, saving a game in NY with that Cano catch. Their success so far is a combination of speed, defense, pitching and power. I think they have to be wary of upsetting this combination, which is the real team chemistry--not the ersatz clubhouse stuff the media talks about. The balance is delicate.
  3. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/2013/04/08/larry-lucchino-expects-john-lackey-miss-start-two/xu1f1RFCH8AMMCICWZOGVI/story.html Lackey to miss one or two starts. Nice opportunity to bring up Webster to see what he can do. Instead, I hear they are shopping for retreads like Harang. Maybe that was before they knew Lackey was OK. But still a nice opportunity for a Webster look-see. Will they do it? Doubt it. The story also gives credit to Cherington for holding out for Webster and DeLaRosa. I believe that. The big salary dumps were handled by Henry and Kasten--if you followed the story. The FOs worked out the prospects. That's their job--to know the farm systems. It's imperative this club maintains its momentum--and builds on the strengths it has shown so far--a balance of pitching, speed, defense and power.
  4. The guy is smokin' right now. Boras must have given him some of his FA juice in Arizona.
  5. If Iggy gets a bunt hit every game, he could hit .400.
  6. He was in decline a couple years ago. Couldn't hit LHP. He got himself in shape, and had a resurgence--which made his contract extensions possible.
  7. Nava is a good hitter LHd, and probably fits in a platoon with Gomes. Vs Carp, the question is whether he can play 1B well enough. He's getting his chance. Gomes should get a shot there, too. Personally, I don't like outfielders moving to the infield. They aren't used to fast reaction on grounders. Shifting from 3B to 1B is probably the easiest transition.
  8. Yeah. Ortiz is beginning to look like the past--ancient history. Not that they couldn't use another power bat in the middle of that lineup. But there is no guarantee he will come back to where he left off. There isn't a financial incentive anymore, and we know how much he can regress when he gets out of shape. Right now, the present lineup is clicking, and shouldn't be tinkered with. I suspect Papi will be platooned with Gomes when he returns. Bradley has cooled off with the bat some (as most of the ST hot hitters have), but he'll probably settle on some mid ground. His speed and defense are not replaceable. Iggy continues to perform way above expectations.
  9. Farrell has gotta love this.
  10. Middle who? Boy is he gonna get tweeted tonite.
  11. Dickey had little movement on his knuckler today. Figured he would decline this year.
  12. Iggy still hitting .600 . ha ha. With his speed and defense, Drew will be a hard sell. You can see his value to the team right now on offense and defense.
  13. Yeah, they're a lot better this year than last the first 5 games. Thanks largely to the kids and Lester/Buchholz. But they could deflate if they start changing lineups sacrificing speed and defense. The pitching needs a defensive lineup. Those RHd batters have done dork so far in the middle of the lineup. Maybe excepting Gomes. They will have to hit a LOT better at Fenway next week to beat the Orioles and TB. Lackey got some bad luck again. Pitching well, and his bicep cramped up. Hope it isn't related to his elbow.Maybe not. That kid Webster is going to need a spot soon in the rotation. The FO continues to overrate starters on this team. They still need a solid #3 behind Lester/Buchholz if they are going to go anywhere. Doubront, Lackey and Dempster have the words "upgrade me to make the playoffs" written on their foreheads.
  14. Nice opportunity for Webster in the rotation. Seize the day.
  15. Ells still hasn't shown any power yet. He can't get big bucks without HRs. That said, I like the present OF. I wonder if Vic and Bradley will switch positions eventually.
  16. Yeah, but what if he's one of those types who becomes Cinderella in the Show? Tell it to the Yankees.
  17. Ha. I tweeted Millar he'll always be a Dirt Dog. He says he never has to pay for a drink when he comes to Boston.
  18. This is a pretty good team. I think they need the young players in there with their speed and defense--they make the lineup less one dimensional. 3 stolen bases tonite. Plus Iggy looking all world at SS. The kids have to be sparking the team right now. Don't lose it. Ciriaco comes in for Iggy tonite and gets 2 hits. That kid must have bad breath or something. He can play.
  19. You have to be pulling for Lackey. Pitching hurt a couple years without saying a word.
  20. Nice win for Farrell. Getting to like him. Toronto fans are better than they showed.
  21. Aceves is like Epstein--gone sour in Boston--for whatever reasons. Trade him. And get rid of Mortenson before he loses any games.
  22. The Orioles still look tough. Showalter is probably the best manager in the division. They could be better than TB or the Red Sox if their pitching holds up. After their top 2 starters, the Red Sox rotation doesn't look very good. And they still use too many BP pitchers in a game--win or lose. A matter of time when they will be forced to bring up Webster. The Red Sox are stuck in almost the same situation they were in before the Dodger dump--except they are stuck shorter term. Those FAs they signed are untradeable with those inflated contracts--so they are stuck with them for 1-3 yrs.
  23. Don't think that's the general consensus. Vic was supposed to make Ells tradeable. Bradley was down the road after that. I suspect the picture has changed.
  24. He's hit the ball better than Napoli--who's a bust so far batting cleanup. The media talk is about Bradley and Iglesias, but the real talk should be about the lack of punch in the middle of the order--so far.
  25. Dempster 5.40 ERA after one game. You figure him to be above 4 this year. They are giving the guy $26 million for 2 years. Because they like him in the clubhouse.
