  1. Dempster vs Pettite in Yankee Stadium? No contest. Even if Pettite was 50. Mortenson pitching in that situation was a mistake. The game was close, even with Dempster pitching. Imagine Gardner hits a HR. No punch in the middle of the lineup. That's the real problem. Not Drew or Iggy or Bradley. Sure they miss Ortiz' bat. Actually, they miss Manny's bat, too. The last time they made the playoffs. They are in a pickle now. Iggy might make them better than Drew. Bradley has to stay in LF. And Webster might be better than Dempster. They have $20 million tied up at the DH between Gomes and Papi. That FO can't resist buying caviar when tuna fish would do.
  2. which explains why Middlebrooks went 0 for 8 and Napoli 1 for 9? Give credit where credit is due--even for only 2 games.
  3. The Red Sox guessed right on Pedro. They offered him 2 years plus a 3rd option year (or maybe the 3rd year at the end) . The Mets had to offer him 4 years to get him--which was very risky at that time. The Red Sox turned out to be right, and the Mets made another bad FA signing. Pedro gave them 2 decent years. I don't remember the situation as Pedro describes it. He went for the maximum $$ deal--didn't have to leave.
  4. ...as long as Ells wants to test the open market. Cano just dumped Boras--which the media interprets as a sign he will stay in NY.
  5. Farrell reiterated today Drew is the starting SS. This means Iggy probably goes down no matter what he does the next few games. No matter this team is now clicking with the added emphasis on speed and defense Bradley and Iggy have brought them. Farrell is probably just carrying out the dictates of the FO here--and their simple-minded policy is play the money. That's the way they have always operated. It kept Kalish in the minors when he was ready, and it may affect their momentum if and when Iggy is sent down. It's doubtful Drew can replace his speed and defense. And I mean offensive speed--on the basepaths. When Ortiz comes back in a few weeks, they'll be in the same predicament about Bradley. Though maybe they'll finesse that by platooning Gomes and Ortiz. They played it safe in the off-season by signing Gomes and Drew. Though nobody saw Bradley coming, and Iggy looked like a sure bet for Pawtucket. But the situation has changed. Will the FO adapt to the change? It's a measure of their competence. Play the best team, guys, not the money.
  6. Once again, for the millionth time, the fallacy of lifting a starter on pitch counts is exposed. 94 pitches. he comes out for the 8th if he's a real man. Which they used to be 20 years ago.
  7. It's still early, but it looks like the speed and defense lineup may be the one Farrell might want to stick to. This runs counter to the lineup the FO gave him, save for Victorino. It would be typical of baseball if they suddenly found themselves with no need for Drew at SS, and even none for Ortiz. Though I suspect Papi and Gomes may be platooned at DH. I don't expect Ortiz to come back to his pre-injury form in the first half of the season--if he ever does. Which means he will probably need a platoon. As for SS, Iggy shines on D, and it's a matter of him hitting a little, and using his speed to his advantage--which he did opening day.
  8. The Dodgers and the Angels are just like the NY teams now--they have the TV money to spend. The Mets are out of the equation as long as Wilpon is the owner. He's tied up paying out Madoff settlement money. So it's the Yanks, Dodgers and Angels who will continue to spend $200+ mil. The solution to all this is to divide up the local TV money--just like they do the game of the week network money. But they won't. TV likes the NY/LA advantage--it's good for their advertising revenues.
  9. In the era of pitch counts, it makes sense to take as many pitches as possible to get the starter out of the game as soon as possible. That gets you to the soft underbelly of the staff--the middle relief. A good reason to avoid first pitch swinging. Take a strike. Get ahead on the count. Maximize the pitch count.
  10. Yanks are in trouble. It started with that ridiculous contract extension they gave ARod. That has put them in a hole. They have spent like drunken sailors over the years to stay in the playoffs. It's important for the TV network bosses in NY. The LA teams are now going to be under the same network pressure to make the playoffs. TV has come to dominate the game. They pay the bills.
  11. Ells had a nice game today. Hit CC pretty well. 3 hits. Bradley showed he can beat you a lot of ways. Vic is a veteran who can play. They must love Bradley right now. Iggy had a good game too. Loved that bunt. The kind of ball they have to play to win.
  12. Yeah, but Walker didn't make a great catch, too. Is Walker in the HOF yet?
  13. Looks like a different team. More speed, defense, better manager. more spirit. Imagine, Iggy 3 hits. Bradley 3 walks. Great run-saving catch off Cano early when it counted. These kids are showing the vets how to play, though Ells and Vic are no slouches. Gomes did OK, too. Tough for RHd hitters in Yankee stadium. They sold some tickets today.
  14. Iggy batting .600. hahaha
  15. So far, the RHd middle of the order has done zero. Napoli-Brooks-Gomes. Wake up, guys. It's the speed and defense that has made a difference. Salty looks very slow behind the plate.
  16. Terrible inning for Lester. Terrible pitch ahead 1-2 on the count. Looked like it might have been foul on the camera-might have touched the chalk. The Yankees always get the call at home.
  17. The summer wind came blowin' in from across the sea...
  18. They're due for some good luck, so they might wind up a few games over .500. That's if the pitching pans out and they stick to a defense-minded team. Which they won't as soon as Ortiz and Drew come back. It's a tough division, and I doubt any team will break out of the pack, unless it's Toronto--if their pitching holds up. The media consensus is they are somewhere in the middle of the pack in the division.
  19. Farrell says Bradley will start in LF, Gomes DH, game 1.
  20. Gomez DFAd. 2:28pm
  21. The kid has done good for himself in ST. In the field, he's so good he reminds me of how good Pedro Martinez was. Has that kind of fluidity. Makes it look easy. He has improved his hitting, and is on the verge of being a ML SS. He would stick on another team, but he has an insurance policy, Drew, ahead of him. So he's better off playing every day in AAA, unless Drew gets traded.
  22. Well, they've got 'till 3 pm to clear a spot on the 40 man roster for Bradley. It's 12:51 pm, and still no twitter news. Cafardo and others think Gomez will be DFAd. Or should be. But nothing yet.
  23. If Bradley continues to stay hot, I expect that OF of Bradley-Vic-Ells to be around for awhile. The defensive implications are too attractive. They might just wind up platooning Gomes and Ortiz. Papi has done some great things with the bat over the years, but he may just have to learn how to play with a little heel pain for awhile. Those things don't go away fast.
  24. I don't know how they get off playing him at 1B. I don't recall him playing there in Pawtucket. I view him strictly as an outfielder, and outfielders have a tough time shifting to the infield. More acclimated to flies than grounders. The shift from 3B to 1B is much easier. Carp has some experience at 1B, and may be more adept there than the OF. The trend is to have bench guys who can play more than 1 position. Ciricao has value because he can play SS, 3B and 2B. The thing about Nava is he's one of the best hitters in Pawtucket when he's there. He has a nice swing LHd and can hit with power--at least at the AAA level.
  25. Gomez hasn't looked good in ST. They are thinking about 1b in Pawtucket more than anything for him, so he could be the one.
