  1. The only reason Middlebrooks got his chance last year was because Youks got hurt. Bradley is blocked by Victorino unless they trade Ellsbury. Bogaerts has a cast of thousands auditioning at SS, and everybody is blocked by Drew this year.
  2. They were not willing to risk the prospects this year--they needed a quick return to respectability--to sell tickets. If they didn't spend the money, how could they justify not lowering ticket prices? Whatever they do, they always seem to have too many FAs or downside vets--blocking prospects. Youks doesn't get hurt last year, MBrooks stays in AAA for the year. The FO has slipped a lot in recent years--not much new blood or ideas there.
  3. I think they lucked out on Napoli, getting out of that 3 year deal. Now they only have one 3 year deal to an over 30 player. Bradley is blocked this year unless they trade Ellsbury--no matter what he does in ST. And even then, he might be blocked by Victorino, though Vic can play RF. I don't like those 2 year deals, either. If any of the prospects are ready now, it will be tough for them to make the team--and even next year, unless they move some people.
  4. I don't recall Websters ML record being all that impressive, though he's a highly rated prospect. The problem is no matter what he and DeLaRosa do in ST, they are pretty much blocked unless somebody gets hurt. The Red Sox have a rigid philosophy of not putting prospects in the BP for a time before starting--unlike what the TB Rays do. So they are stuck in the minors until they are brought up to start. Sooner or later, they'll get their chance, but it will depend more on what the current rotation does, and not on what they do in AAA. I'm no expert on pitching practices, but their poor pitching performance in recent years suggests they ought to take a look at what they are doing.
  5. DeLaRosa has pitched for the Dodgers, so I guess he's not eligible for this list.
  6. Iggy just hit a dinger. Stranger than fiction.
  7. Iggy hits a dinger. :lol::lol:

  9. It appears Aceves' agent reminded him that his $2.65 million salary is not guaranteed this year. Since he made only $1.2 million last year, he can hardly afford not to be on his best behavior this spring, and give his utmost effort. In fact, a lot of folks in his shoes would kiss Farrell's feet every morning to make that kind of money. Maybe his agent reminded him of that, too. There's a side of sports these days that's more fantasy than fantasy sports.
  10. I see Dan Shaughnessy has decided to go after the "Teflon" GM Ben Cherington. Ben probably made as many mistakes his first GM year as any average poster fan could have made in the job. And Henry could have gotten them for a lot cheaper--and found a few better ones. http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2013/02/21/ben-cherington-due-for-some-blame-pie/kRESv1oZE48ZleT36uKQAI/story.html We'll see if going after quantity instead of quality in FAs was a better way to eat up the Dodger money. I hope Ben says a prayer that Bard returns to form. And Bailey doesn't get hit by a meteor.
  11. I think they want to see Bogaerts play 3B a few games in the WBC. It could broaden their options. For example, Iggy could hit .400 in ST, Drew could break his other ankle and Napoli's hip could force Middlebrooks to play 1B. Stranger things have happened on the Red Sox.
  12. This carp is no trout, though he has flashed some decent numbers in the minors. Actually has some power and on-base abilities.
  13. Hate to see Aceves or any other player get put under the microscope so early in the year. Last year, the management got forced to deal Youkilis because of statements to the media--by both the manager and Youks. It's pretty dumb when you allow the media to dictate your roster--though they certainly lucked out with Middlebrooks, who would still be in AAA if Youks hadn't left. Thank the media for that. Aceves did a lot of things last year well enough--started, closed., etc. More was asked of him than any other pitcher on that roster--thanks to the FO screwing up on Bard. The guy apparently cracked at the end of last year--and is still PO'd this year. I get the impression he feels he wasn't fairly treated. Maybe he was asked to do too much last year. He needs some benign neglect. The media needs to lay off the guy, and the rest of the Red Sox. Give Farrell a chance to motivate these guys. Stop interfering.
  14. That's pretty much the point I was trying to make. You have to wonder whether it's time for new ownership--Henry clearly isn't changing much within an organization that needs a fresh approach.
  15. The caveat is the Oakland As are a team full of nobodies, and they did pretty well last year. But their organization is much better than Boston's.
  16. Trouble is, somebody said Bradley's agent is also Boras. Boras is into player development and conditioning as well, which must wrankle some teams.
  17. ha. That's one way to interpret it, but not the only way. Depends on how much you play. Better off getting hurt in Boston instead of treading water in Pawtucket.
  18. Reddick had a strong first half his last season in Boston--then tapered off the 2nd half. Pretty much the same pattern in Oakland, though he did show more power in Oakland. But he's also a very good outfielder--overlooked by the Red Sox. Reddick is also an example of a guy who has exceeded his minor league numbers in the majors. A sign maybe he's still improving. You have to question the judgement of the Red Sox FO in recent years--starting with the FA signings of Epstein. This is basically the same FO as in the Epstein era, so not much change there. What they have done is rehired James as a consultant--which should help. That was the beginning of their demise a few years ago, when they let all their saber consultants go--part-time people who cost them a pittance. The upper management has made a lot of dumb decisions the last 4-5 years, and that's why they are where they are.
  19. Exactly. The dangers of sitting on prospects blocked by salary.
  20. http://live.boston.com/Event/2013_Red_Sox_spring_training/63652580 This misleading story is an example of how the Globe has made Valentine a patsy for all the Red Sox problems, while deflecting blame from the current regime. The story implies that Bard didn't trust Valentine--what he was saying was he trusted Farrell, because Farrell had seen him previously. But Valentine did see him in Ft Myers, before his makeover into a starter--and felt he should stay in the bullpen. He was, of course, overruled by Cherington--which was the beginning of Valentine's problems. I doubt Bard was taking a "thinly veiled shot at Valentine" . Rather it was the Globe which was doing so--unfairly. Bard's target should be Cherington and the FO--but that would not be advisable.
  21. Regarding options, etc, there definitely is a pecking order. It doesn't seem to depend much on output, but more on how many options you have left and how much salary you are trying to replace. Veterans making salary have preference to guys without options who have preference to guys with options. That's the pecking order. The guys with options get demoted first.
  22. They are accustomed to being a $160-170 million team. That means prospects get blocked unless there are injuries. Middlebrooks lucked out last year. Kalish got blocked a couple years ago by Drew, and wrecked his career getting hurt in Pawtucket.
  23. Seem like the Sox have plenty of options for starters right now. The question is whether their starters will pitch to their potential and stay healthy. You figure 1 or 2 of their 3-4 prospects will get a shot at some point when the starters begin hitting the DL.
  24. He'll hit better if he stops reading the news stories saying he can't hit.
  25. Iggy needs more time. He hasn't had a full AAA season yet--needs it to develop his hitting. The other 2 kids, you like to see in Boston sometime during the season if they progress further. If any of these kids lights up in spring training, they should be given the opportunity to win a job on this team.
