Any DHs in the HOF? Only ones, I think, like Yaz who played in the field mainly (and very well), and then stretched his hitting stats as a DH. I don't think any pure DHs have made it. What's it take? 75%? It's tough to get 75% of any voters to vote for anything.

You throw a lefty against the Yankees whenever you can. They are built to hit RHP, because of their ballpark.

McDonald has been DFAd, as per the Globe tonite. To make room for Beckett. That's one less outfielder in the mix. My hope is Kalish sticks, and Sweeney gets dealt, but that FO is liable to option Kalish--the guy with the upside. Lillibridge messes up the OF situation, because they'll carry him as an infielder, too. The guys they should keep besides CC and Ells are Nava, Ross and Kalish. There's some talk of Salty making the all-star team--I voted for him. But Napoli, Mauer and Wieters are supposedly ahead of him, though Salty has the best power numbers.

With all those steroid guys getting off in court with expensive lawyers, it's possible the media may soften a bit on the steroid issue. But we're talking mainly about network media based largely in NYC, so I doubt the sportswriters in Peoria or Wichita are going to change much. I doubt anybody suspected of steroids is going to get enough votes. You have to wonder who wasn't taking steroids during the 90s when it wasn't tested for, and everybody knew it helped their power stats. I guess pitchers were taking it, too, but it's never been documented what the advantage was for them. I heard Clemens took it to come back quicker from soreness. It clearly helped him a lot in Toronto. Regarding Papi, being a DH only hurts him--one-dimensional. Plus he had two bad years a couple of years ago. I suspect he and Manny were loading up during their peak years, like ARod and most of the other sluggers.

The deal is Lester + Ellsbury for Felix. Good one for Seattle. They may not be able to re-sign Ells, and Lester is pitching like he needs a change of scenery.

I have a hunch Lackey will came back strong next year. I think he was damaged goods from the start in Boston. The caveat is it usually takes more than a season to get to 100%. Dice-K has come back sooner than I expected.

The Yankees now have two starters DLed--Pettite and CC. They will be in the market for a pitcher tommorrow.

Yeah, the FO screwed it up, but I think Bard will eventually come back OK. Athletes have great resiliency. I believe his move to starter was almost totally motivated by cost cutting, and it blew up in their faces. The Red Sox management seems to have fallen apart the last few years, and Henry really hasn't cleaned house as much as he should have. That's my impression, anyways. They got spoiled, maybe, with too much money to spend. Kind of like those hedgefunders and swaps guys. Right, Henry?

Morales has the stuff to be a good starter--as good as any they have-- if he can find the strike zone consistently. None of the Red Sox starters has shown any consistency so far this year, however. You have to wonder if changing pitching coaches every year can have a negative effect. It's a sign that all is not right with the pitching management.

That decision to convert Bard into a starter was a bigger disaster than meets the eye: If Bard closes, they trade for Gio G. instead of Bailey. They tried to get both but didn't have enough to do it. But they had enough to get one. And they chose the wrong one. Gio just won his 10th game of the season last night.

Anybody ask what they are going to do about their stampede of outfielders when CC and Ellsbury come back? You don't just give them away, like Youkilis. Like I've said, I'd trade Ellsbury for an ace starter. I doubt Cherington has the balls, but Ells is going for the big contract soon. Since when do players bypass managers to complain to GMs? That's a ticket to get traded on most teams.

I wonder why there have been so many bad first innings lately. Are these starters warmed up sufficiently? Players don't like to be 4 runs down after the first inning.

The problem with the guy in the BP is he is an unknown. You don't know how sharp he will be. The guy out on the mound is a known. A pitcher doesn't have the same stuff every appearance.

Depends on how close the game is. 1 or 2 runs, the leadoff batter gets on, you take him out. 3 runs or more, you leave him in for a batter or 2. Depends on how he is throwing. The manager should know that, or else he isn't doing his job. In my view, a reliever is a reliever. if he can't pitch with MOB, he isn't a great reliever. Get somebody who can.

That's the beauty of Fenway. You look at the bleachers, and see the place where you and your dad sat 62 years ago. In those days, you sat on green benches. Now they have seats out there, just like the grandstand. I always liked the brown Gulden's mustard on the hot dogs.

Yeah--they were over a barrel with Youks. They had no position for him and had to move him. Nobody was going to give them anything for him. It shows how desperate the WSox were for help at 3B.

Agreed. But that's the mindset of most managers these days. They have an 8th inning guy, and then a 9th inning guy. Pretty soon they'll have a 7th inning guy, and then a 6th inning guy... Leyland has cost Verlander two wins this year (in April) doing the same thing--taking out Verlander late, with a lead, when he didn't have to. Valentine has done the same--notably with Doubront. Morales was also taken out an inning too soon. Todays' managers just can't wait to get to the bullpen--to replace their $15million starter with a bunch of $1million dollar retreads. Risky business. As for Pap, I think that was ownership talking. They simply didn't want to deal with Boras on Madsen because of the Drew experience. They felt they had to go big with a closer because of their big 3 starters.Good move, as it turned out. I don't think they expected Halladay to go down--nor to have early hitting problems, even without Howard. My guess is they'll be strong 2nd half with Howard and Halladay. They are now 2nd in the league in hitting.

Youks problem is he got pushed out of two positions in Boston. Plus he got injured a lot the last couple years. Is he a steal? Maybe, but I wouldn't count on it at 33. He's not much of a 3rd baseman st this point. That article I saw above is typical partisan BS.
