  1. I see an article this morning about how Ciriaco has energized the team. Brought some life to it. Seems that every time they bring somebody up from that Pawtucket team, they get energized. Which tells me the front office missed the boat at the beginning of the season--by failing to see the Red Sox had gone stale and needed an infusion of new blood--young blood with enthusiasm. The resistance to bringing up Iglesias and Lav come to mind. Middlebrooks wasn't there yet--but he soon came a spark after his hot AAA start. I always felt that getting rid of Epstein wasn't enough. Epstein's people are still there and I doubt they think they did anything wrong. They are basically a status quo bunch. Henry took the money away, but that did not help. It helped Henry, but it didn't help the team. The culture is unchanged, and Valentine hasn't changed that--not with his limited authority.
  2. Those are pretty expensive hits Crawford got at Pawtucket. Considering what's going with the Red Sox right now, he and Ellsbury should have been "rehabbing" in the Boston outfield. Even at less than 100%, they might be an improvement--if only by their presence.
  3. I'm not optimistic because I think they have management issues that are affecting team morale.
  4. Cherington said today they are not sellers. They can come back if their key players play to their potential. That includes the top 3 starters. They would be selling low at this point, which would be pretty foolish. They've already been burned by the Youkilis deal. That guy got pushed out and they got beans for him.
  5. Funny story from Lee. First day in school, teacher asked him his name. He said BillLee. Teacher said what is your FULL name? Lee said BillLee. Teacher said, Billy for that, you can stand at the back of the class. Like the guy, but still can't forgive him for that meatball blooper pitch he threw to Perez with the '75 Series almost won. That was not a place for screwing around.
  6. Kalish was ready to play in Boston two years ago, but Drew was in the way in RF. Then he got hurt in Pawtucket. That killed 2 years of his career. Reddick broke out the first half of last year--then tailed off. They figured he showed enough value to trade him. The problem was they signed Crawford --filling up the outfield--with Reddick and Kalish in the wings. They blocked up the outfield without giving the youngsters a chance. They shouldn't have made the Bailey trade. They could have easily moved Bard to closer, Aceves to setup, and signed a FA pitcher. But they simply didn't want to spend the money for a FA pitcher. All their pre-season personnel decisions were made with a view towards saving money-- per Henry.
  7. http://audio.weei.com/a/59157031/bill-lee-thinks-the-red-sox-need-a-change-in-philosophy.htm Listen to Bill Lee on WEEI. He says players use weights too much these days, which weaken joints. He says Lester pitches around the plate instead of the middle of the plate out. He doesn't get strikes from the umps that way. Interesting views about pitchers overstressed on machines instead of just playing baseball to get into shape.
  8. The Phillies have been the dominant NL team the past few years. The playoffs are a crapshoot, where whoever is hot can dominate. The Phillies are in trouble this year because Halladay went down and Lee has been inconsistent. Pure and simple. not much to do with Howard. Their top 3 in pitching has been their top 1--Hamels. Kind of the same problem as the Red Sox big 3 --which has been the small 3.
  9. They can't afford to skip a year. Not when they are filling all those expensive seats with 3 million or so fans. That's why it's imperative to find the upside quickly on their prospects, and not fill holes with retreads on the cheap. The FA route has put them in an untenable financial position--they can't afford to match the Yankees dollar for dollar. That means they have to rely on their farm system more than they have been doing the last few years. The FO has been far too conservative with bringing young players up and developing them on the job to find the nuggets (like Middlebrooks). Look at Reddick. They traded that guy without knowing what they were trading. He has been breaking out the last two years, surpassing his AAA numbers.
  10. Pretty good grading. I'd rate Cherington a D. He's been given too much authority for a first year GM. I'd rate Henry/Lucchino an F. I gave the team a D.
  11. Ben's bad decisions: --moving Bard to starter; V wanted him in the BP --trading for Bailey instead of Gio G. He could have had either, but not both. --not making Iglesias the starting SS from the start. His defense would have helped the pitching. Again, against the wishes of V, from reports. --not bringing up Lavarnway. Nothing like learning on the job. Right, Salty? Lucchino's bad decisions: --For making the manager search public, which revealed differences with the FO --For letting the FO control personnel after he hired Valentine. --For maintaining the status quo and not changing the culture. Lucchino, more than anyone else, is responsible for the management conflicts on the Red Sox, which could be affecting team performance.
  12. They already traded low on one guy--Youkilis. Look what happened there. It would be foolish to trade low on any other underachiever right now.
  13. Eckersley said in an interview it's all about the big 3 starters--Beckett, Lester and Buchholz. He said they are going nowhere unless those 3 turn it around and pitch more consistently and to their capabilities. He says Lester has regressed the last two years into a bit of a head case. I say the guy is overweight and flat out of shape. Eck also said Beckett is past his prime--not a #1 starter anymore.
  14. In Bradley's case, he had two surgeries--on both shoulders. The left one first after the season. They had to wait for some healing of the left one before doing the right one now. Crawford's case is different. We don't know the facts, but the Red Sox seem to have a policy of taking forever to get players back and playing them for weeks in the minors. In the meantime, they get injured playing in the minors--which is pretty ridiculous. An excellent reason to rehab in Boston--on the bench.
  15. Youkilis' apparent turnaround in Chicago is more evidence this team has some morale problems--alluded to by Olney and Cafardo. If those problems aren't corrected, this team is going nowhere. They are just kidding themselves.
  16. AdGon left so they could look at Gomez at his proper position--finally.
  17. I guess he has to throw less from LF in Pawtucket than in Boston.
  18. I see Fatty started off the game in true Sox starter fashion. Does he have a double chin yet? The guy looks like he's put on 20 lbs the last 2 years. He needs Papi's dietician.
  19. Cafardo today wonders why Ellsbury isn't playing in Boston, if he can play in the minors. I wonder why Crawford has been pussying around in the minors, too, the last several weeks. Waiting to get injured again? Another example of the absurdities of the Red Sox organization. Keep playing these guys in the minors until they get hurt again. I might add that some think Cafardo is V's mouthpiece. If so, the Red Sox are in a lot of trouble, because V may be out of the loop. That could well affect the team.
  20. On this moneyball stuff, sure high OBP is important. But it's really all about pitching. And defense is an important part of pitching. Just look at the standings vs team stats. The moneyball ideologues in baseball often forget about other aspects of the game.
  21. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2012/07/08/frustrated_red_sox_need_a_jolt/ Cafardo's column this morning reiterates what I've been saying: if Ells can play in the minors, he can play here; and why are Red Sox starters getting bombed in the first inning? He says the Red Sox need some energy, perhaps from a big trade or further infusion of the farm system. Felix for Ells and fatty Lester is a possibility, but Felix may be unavailable. The other options are Garza and Hamels. The Yankees are hot after Hamels right now--it's time for Ben to get off his ass. No playoffs, no job, Ben. Life is tough.
