  1. I think Nava is a better hitter than Crawford.
  2. .340 and counting. The hit machine.
  3. Business as usual for the media. Not business as usual for the underachieving Red Sox. They're playing good ball right now--sparked by those Pawtucket kids who have bred some life into this team.
  4. I doubt they can afford Ellsbury. Not with Boras as his agent and all their other ill-conceived mega-signings. He looks tradeable unless they can unload CC. I don't think they can afford to keep both.
  5. Nava--Kalish 1-2 in the order with 5 hits. Salty hitting like Johnny Bench. Life is good.
  6. Don't be surprised if Ells gets traded--for a prime starter.
  7. Nava has talent, all right. He's a switch hitter with a helluva swing. And he has had some impressive years in the minors. You don't judge a hitter on pure power. Besides, this kid looks like he might improve his power numbers in time, as Youkilis did. Granted he's 29, but he started in the minors at 24, and has only had about 3 full years.
  8. Nava-Ross-Kalish-CC-Ells. Don't have to go any further.
  9. Sox no. 2 in hitting with no CC, Ells; plus Youks and AdGon not hitting. Pedey slow start. How's that? Salty, Nava, Papi, Aviles, Ross, MBrooks, Sweeney have taken up the slack.
  10. Scutaro is playing 2B this year. Aviles is playing SS. I think they are comparable players. The biggest difference is their salaries. That's why Scutaro was traded. They saved $6 mil on the deal, which is pretty good for a 36yo now playing 2B. Aviles has shown decent power numbers for a SS. I don't knock the FO for that deal.
  11. What happened is the trainer's wife undercut his testimony. Plus Pettite changed his story. That's all it takes. You pay a clever defense lawyer, and he can introduce just enough doubt--in one way or another. Cafardo says no doubt Clemens used steroids starting in Toronto--which turned his career around. But he still deserves to be in the HOF, of which I disagree. I doubt any of these guys who have gotten off with clever lawyers will get into the HOF: Clemens, Bonds, Mac, Sosa. There aren't enough votes for them. The sportswriters know the score.
  12. I think Duke and Theo both contributed to the 04 success. I'm also concerned about Ben C and the rest of the front office. They haven't done much right so far, and most of it has been done with a view toward controlling costs. Management problems usually emanate from the top, and you can point to Henry/LL as the source.
  13. Right. It's what Cafardo has been saying all along: Ben C and the FO are not on the same page as the manager. They still have a bug up their ass about Sveum, and the way Henry/LL overruled them. From the look of things, LL has been letting them get their way on personnel: especially Bard, Iggy and Lav. The players know this, and it could have some affect on their morale if they think their best team is not out there. This may have been what Olney was talking about--without being more specific. Maybe the problem with the FO is they were given too much power under Epstein, and it has been tough for LL to get some of the power back.
  14. The 2nd half of the season is often the reverse of the first half for both teams and players, so you don't know what's going to happen. There will be surprises.
  15. Man, that's a great shot of Fenway. Is that a 24mm lens? Fisheye? Ah, those fisheyes are phenominal. Fenway no doubt is the greatest ML park. I sat in those bleachers 60 years ago for 50 cents. You see that light tower in left center? 2nd one from the left? I saw Mantle hit one halfway up that tower in '57, batting RHd. Longest HR I ever saw over the Monster.
  16. Yeah, I thought it was strange that Pods hit into a DP last game--he must have a leg issue. The guy looks in great shape for 36.
  17. Yeah, and now Werner is taking issue with Theo's claim he was pushed by ownership to up the money ante. Not so, says Werner. But they did give him a free reign the past few years, and that proved to be disastrous. Clearly, they weren't going to renew his contract, so he flew to Chicago. I'll bet that Chicago owner has him on a money leash. He hasn't spent a dime there so far.
  18. I would sit AdGon and play Youks at 1B. If he's going to hit, he will hit there--he's more at home at 1B. 3B is a higher pressure position for a guy 33. They aren't going to sit Ortiz at DH, so the logical thing is to sit AdGon, who looks like he needs a vacation.
  19. Having read Beckett's response to Olney's story, I'll add this caveat: when was the last time you heard a NY sports pundit say anything good about the Red Sox? Olney is NY-based. I think the Red Sox have some leadership and management problems. But I also think the media overplays a lot of things, and I wouldn't completely trust anybody from NY. That's Yankeeland.
  20. I thought I posted in this thread but don't see the post. Maybe it was the thread on Epstein. Harrington, who was running the team when Duquette was GM, was a penny pincher who kept Fenway dirty. Literally. He didn't open up his pocketbook until he was ready to sell the team. That's when he surprised everybody by signing Ramirez to a big contract. Prior to that, Duquette had little resources to work with--a pittance compared to Epstein. Duquette was a introverted guy who didn't get along well with the media. He did not give Gammons and the Globe the story on Manny's signing, and that did not bode well with Gammons. You want good media, you have to stroke these guys. It takes more than free booze and sandwiches in the press room.
  21. I've been saying the management is not on the same page. The players know what's going on. It affects the team effort.
  22. Morales has gone largely under the radar. He simply didn't fit in their starter plans. They were googly-eyed over Bard starting, and they have wet their pants over Miller for so long .... (you fill it in). The other thing they did was a sign a ton of retread pitchers in ST--none of whom had enough time to show anything. You shop in Filene's basement pinching pennies for pitchers, you wind up in the basement. Morales has shown good stuff and some heat coming out of the bullpen. Location has been a problem at times. But maybe regular work as a starter might solve that. He was a stud starter in Colorado as a rookie, then got hurt and lost his way. Maybe he's found it back.
  23. I don't think they'll do a thing until CC and Ells come back, and they see where they are. Then they'll have to cut or trade a few outfielders. And maybe then they'll deal Youkilis. If they can unload any of those $20mil contracts for 50 cents on a dollar, they should. The front office has made some dumb decisions this year on Iglesias and Bard, and the team has suffered from the clash between the FO and V. Bard should have closed or setup for Bailey--and then moved to closer when Bailey got injured. Iggy should have been the starting SS--he showed enough in ST. But LL, the real culprit along with Henry, let Ben & Co have their way because they made them look bad in the botched up, overexposed manager search. You look at those front office guys seen in the draft room on draft day--a bunch of preppies who don't look a day over 30. Some of those kids sitting in AAA may have more experience. Maybe I'm just getting old.
