  1. Papi could use a day off--here and there. It's a mental game, too, especially for a DH.
  2. Lav is still in AAA because the FO signed Shoppach for more defensive experience. And they don't change direction very easily--in case you haven't noticed.
  3. Epstein alluded to his problem in Boston with his prospect lineup. For example, if Hanley Ramirez hadn't been traded to the Marlins, chances are he would have still been in AAA his ROY year in Florida. Therein lies the problem in Boston: downside veterans under contract take preference over upside prospects, who must wait in the minors for an injury to happen. Or their own injury, in the case of Kalish--which cost him 2 years of his career. You could say the same for Iglesias, an all-star SS defensively who apparently has to show he can hit like Hanley before he can play in Boston. Hanley, by the way, never showed the offense in the minors he showed in Florida. That was a surprise. Lavarnway is another--a kid who may have more upside than Salty--though Salty has been looking good lately. From what I can tell Epstein's problem is still a front office problem. Perhaps no surprise. The prospects are tearing up AAA, and it takes an injury to get them to Boston.
  4. Epstein was OK thru 07. He just went sour after that. The whole organization went sour--and probably still is.
  5. Wilbur lays it on the line here: http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/wilbur/2012/06/business_collap.html I agree it's a management problem --from the top down. I've been saying that for awhile. The lineup of prospects Epstein outlines includes a lot of the kids the current FO says needs "more experience." More experience, BS. They are a bureaucracy. They have big money to spend, so they spend it. If they went the prospect route, the team would be better and the ticket prices would be lower.
  6. Which goes to show you can't pay any attention to the media. Their agenda is to make money--not to win games. Belichick has a sign over the locker room door. It says: "Ignore the Media", or equivalent.
  7. Quick fix means playing Yankee moneyball. Fatal mistake. He hasn't spent a dime yet in Chicago, and his buddy Ben has no money, either. Throwing $160-180 mil at a player guaranteed over 6-8 years is incredibly risky. Look at the Angels right now with Pujols. They are stuck with a declining player. And the Red Sox are stuck with more, and don't have a Fox TV contract to fall back on. NESN isn't that big.
  8. Papi will retire a Red Sox. Guaranteed, unless he loses his stroke again.
  9. And Epstein's boys are still in charge. Just the money has changed.
  10. Never trade with the Yankees. Never. Remember Danny Cater for Sparky Lysle?
  11. Blowing up is not what the Red Sox need. They have had major injuries at 2 outfield positions and are using filler players. They also have a logjam at 3B, and a marginal SS. Pedroia has been hurting. Gonzo has lost his stroke. They need to resolve the logjam at 3B by trading Youks. They also have 1 or 2 extra outfielders. It's about time they pulled the plug instead of playing guys like Youkilis and McDonald to increase their trade value. They should also finally get Iglesias up playing SS when he's healthy again. The kid can't hit much worse than half the team is hitting right now, and will be a real defensive spark for the pitching. And how about Lav? Tell me about it. There really isn't much more they can do. It's tough to trade overpriced players. Getting a pitcher like Garza without trading Lav or Iggy or MBrooks would help the pitching.
  12. Hopefully, we'll see Kalish soon. He was ready 2 years ago when Drew was under contract.
  13. They're playing Youks to get his trade value up. At least that seems to be the plan. The lineup is a mess. But remember much of the problem is the injuries to Elllsbury and Crawford. These guys have been out forever, expecially Crawford. Plus Gonzo isn't hitting.
  14. I would give the umps an electronic graphic of the pitch--an instant picture of where the ball actually landed relative to the strike zone. The instant pics that are available on ESPN and MLB during the games. They should also have access to instant replay on the bases. TV has technology available to help umpires, and it is isn't used for dumb egotistical reasons. They should have access to this technology to make their job easier.
  15. The Pawsox are doing pretty well on their own--they don't need Red Sox problems.
  16. Damn good reasons why the Sox are in last place. Plus they are missing a few major players due to injuries. Plus their starting pitching still sucks.
  17. After the gorilla suit affair, Epstein was given more power over player personnel. He signed Crawford over the stated objections of Henry. That tells a lot. My impression is the front office was accustomed to pretty much running the show, and they expected that would continue after Epstein left. They clearly didn't pick the manager, but appear to have the upper hand over Valentine in personnel matters. That seems to be a concession from Lucchino. I believe part of the Red Sox problem right now is a tug of war between the FO and V. If you believe the Globe's Cafardo is V's mouthpiece, there are significant differences and V isn't getting his way on personnel.
  18. Lowrie and Reddick aside, the PawSox have had the best or near the best record in AAA so far this season. Isn't it about time some of their best players besides Middlebrooks saw Red Sox uniforms?
  19. They can blame the umps, but when you see guys trying to pull outside pitches and hitting weak grounders, you know they are in trouble.
  20. I don't think V has made any difference, but I don't think V is the problem. This thread should really be about the people above V who run this team--and their choice of personnel--both off and on the field.
