  1. Yeah--Carl learned how to hit in Pawtucket this weekend.
  2. What pisses me off about Youkilis is he was hitting like crap for 3 weeks in Boston, gets traded for a bag of beans, and suddenly regains his form in Chicago. Apparently he was pouting in Boston about Bobby Vs big mouth. That was not very professional of him. The media, predictably, doesn't say a word about this. They are focussed on the Youks vs V soapsuds. I say shame on Youks.:thumbdown
  3. If they don't get Garza or Felix, they will have a hard time making the playoffs with their pitching and management problems. The trade deadline will be another test for the front office.
  4. They ought to get rid of both Sweeney and Lillibridge. Ciriaco is a better choice in the infield. Punto is a problem with his contract, but he's another guy who should be used only as a last resort--late innings defense, not starting.
  5. Today is July 15th. It ain't over 'till it's over. Hit a HR today.
  6. 3 walks in the 9th inning for TB. This one is like the Yankee-Halos game.
  7. I keep reading great things about the Sox BP, but I don't see it. They do shuffle a lot of pitchers in every game. One of them is bound to be hit.
  8. Hate to see the kid get put under a micrscope. He's a good hitter and has done a helluva job in Boston this year filling in for Crawford--better than expected. He's shown enough to stick in the big leagues, as far as I'm concerned--as a starter or reserve. Another dinger today batting behind Ells. If he can get hot again, maybe he can lead off, so they can move Ells to 3rd--where Ells belongs if he can show his power again. They need more hitting around Ortiz, who isn't getting much to hit. Gonzalez needs to bat 6th until he shows some pop again.
  9. 4 walks in the 9th inning. Soscia needs a better closer for his expensive team.
  10. Ross is a platoon player. His stats reflect that. If he wasn't he'd cost a lot more.
  11. Nava shouldn't be expected to hit .350. He was bound to correct some. If he gets the chance, he'll come back up to .290-300. But he won't get the chance. You think Trout is going to hit .350?
  12. Beckett up to his usual old tricks--throwing straight letter high meatballs down the middle in the first inning.
  13. In spite of the injuries and lack of hitting production from some of the Sox high priced regulars, their main problem continues to be pitching. They are among the bottom 5 teams in the AL in pitching, and among the top four teams in hitting. They have had a problem lately with their starters getting out of the first or second inning without getting bombed. Plus, as 700hitter points out, their bullpen has blown 11 saves already, vs 16 the whole of last season--including the September collapse. Oddly enough, the Phillies have the same situation. The media incorrectedly attributes the Phillies poor start to a lack of hitting: the Phillies are among the top 5 teams in hitting in the NL, but among the bottom 5 teams in pitching. It's the pitching that's killing them--mainly due to Halladay going down and Lee's poor start. The main difference right now between the Red Sox and the Yankees is pitching. The Yankees are giving up about .5 runs per game less than the Red Sox , while the Red Sox' team BA is about 7 points higher than the Yankees. It's about the pitching.
  14. A telltale stat showing the effect of losing Bard-Papelbon. The mistake Cherington made was in not moving Bard to closer or setup when Bailey went down. He left the back end of the bullpen vulnerable.
  15. What they need to do is to say a Noveena that Baltimore and Toronto collapse in August.
  16. And meanwhile, back in Pawtucket, Carl Crawford...
  17. Playing CC in Pawtucket for the weekend instead of TB defies logic. Pure and simple. It tells me there is something wrong with the Red Sox management structure. Here they have a guy they're paying $20 million, and they think he won't hit as good in TB vs Pawtucket for a couple of games? Give the fans a break...please. They have been playing retreads in the OF the past 3 months. It tells me the Red Sox management are a bunch of fat cats who don't give a crap about winning. Kind of like the early Yawkey mentality. Time to sell the team, Henry, and roll a few heads.
  18. http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/8162350/boston-red-sox-manager-bobby-valentine-seems-encountering-problems-all-directions Some insights into the Red Sox management problems by Edes. Confirms there is a feeling in the organization that there is insufficient urgency to get rehabbing players back to action. That's been pretty obvious to me and others. The culprit seems to be Mike Reinhold, head trainer. Says there isn't great communication between Valentine and "his" coaches--most of whom were not hired by him. Nor is there much rapport with the players. I suppose Youkilis would be a prime example, but it was the FO that pushed him out of a job--not Valentine. As for the other holdovers, I doubt Valentine has had much effect in changing anything. Maybe that's why the newbies are having more impact. All in all, not a pretty picture. I've been saying the management issues are the biggest problem, and this article doesn't alter that view.
  19. They had to take something for Youkilis.
  20. Cherington says Crawford will play two games in Pawtucket this weekend, then join the Sox on Monday. Why isn't he playing this weekend against TB--his old team? In a crucial series? Seems like a setup for him. Once again, Cherington and the front office takes a casual view --long range view--towards winning. They are running out of range.
