That was a mistake. Changed CC to LF. You figure Ross will stick, being a Rhd hitter. That leaves 1 other OFder.
Nava gets another hit. The kid hits .300, he might stick.
Add Kalish to the OF mix. Ultimately, they should want Kalish-RF, Ells-CF, CC-LF. That's all Left handed hitting, but a hell of an outfield speedwise. Then they have Ross, Nava, Sweeney, McD and Pods. Has to be a trade when CC and Ells come back.
Anyway you look at it, the Sox are in deep trouble because of the CC and Adgon signings. They have to unload those guys--somehow. It's a twin killer now that AdGon has lost his stroke. They might wind up having to deal Ellsbury, but can't until he returns and gets going again.
Look for a big rebound the 2nd half. He was on the DL once and hasn't pitched badly. He threw a 10 inning shutout in SF recently and lost. W-L means almost nothing for a starter these days--it's largely dictated by the BP.
I figured from the start it was very much a wash between the two. It was a good move dealing Scutaro, who is now a 2nd baseman. Aviles isn't a bad player, but he doesn't give you the defense at SS the pitching could use.
I see the Red Sox problems as basically front office problems. Bad decisions over the past few years.
A preference for downside veterans over upside prospects. Expensive signings which messed up chemistry
and put the team in an untenable financial position to fill real needs. They've gone in the wrong direction the past few years by going the high cost veteran route. Not enough young blood mixed in.
Mags has a simple problem with AdGon. The guy has lost his batting eye. He's swinging at pitches outside of the strike zone. Even the announcers are talking about it. Maybe he needs glasses. Maybe he just doesn't care.
Duquette never got the media Epstein got in Boston. That was the big difference. He had a bad relationship with Gammons, because he didn't give him or the Globe the Manny Ramirez' signing story.
Gammons later became a rock guitar buddy of Epstein. Duquette did not have the extroverted personality that Epstein has, nor the ego. That hurt him with the media.
I should add that Harrington had very tight purse strings when he was running the Red Sox. The ball park was dirty. Duquette didn't have much money to work with until the team was up for sale. That's when Harrington opened the floodgates and signed Ramirez.
The guy they want is Garza, not Dempster. Garza has pitched well in the AL East. Track record there.
It will cost one of their prime prospects--to be sure. Lav or Kalish or Middlebrooks.
This will be a 10-4 game for the Sox--unless Garza's pitching. They hit the ball well yesterday, but at every fielder. Just one of those games. And one of those years so far. Very little has gone right.
Not MVP. He was NL rookie of the year in 06, the first season after he got traded.
If he hadn't been traded, he would have still been in the minors. It was a good move for him.
I don't know that Ortiz has done anything more than just correct a bit after a big start hitting. He still looks good at the plate.
What's surprising to many is his defense at 1B. Had a hell of a good game today there defensively.
He isn't very mobile at his age, but he certainly can play there in a pinch.
It's time to sit Gonzo down a few games. He's swinging at bad pitches.
Aviles has done a pretty good job. His numbers except for OBP (.290) are pretty good for a SS.
He's certainly no better than average defensively. With the pitching bad and the defense almost as bad, you would think a defensive wiz like Iglesias would be more valued. I'm wondering if he hasn't been a victim of a power struggle between the FO and V.
As for Hanley, he started slow, got hot, and has now cooled off again. Defensively, I don't know if he's much of an improvement over Aviles at this point. I doubt he's on the market. The Marlins are desperate to attract Miami's Hispanics to fill the stadium, and he's one of their showpieces.
