  1. I don't know enough about Pederson to make that call, but I would love to listen to other teams offers for Lester. I imagine we can get something good via trade. Then again I'd love to hear trade offers for anyone. I ran my fantasy team the same way.
  2. I also feel like Jacobs was in AA as an audition for the White Sox who were interested in him for a while. Honestly I'd be reasonably happy with this trade if I'm either side.
  3. I wasn't trying to imply anything from your argument. My point was that if the trade doesn't work out, and Thornton blows up and Jacobs becomes an All Star, we can't simply dismiss the logic behind the trade given the lack of present production, OF depth, and rule 5 concerns. A bad trade and an even/good trade that didn't work out aren't the same.
  4. I think SR's 33% has more to do with the absolutely s***** OF's that a few major league teams have more than it does Jacob's abilities.
  5. To your point a700 I understand that these kind of trades always have downsides. And the downside, or risk, is the potential that Jacobs becomes something. Then again, one can argue that he could become something somewhere else that he probably couldn't here, given the fact that he's blocked. Obviously if Thornton doesn't do well and Jacobs does, one can look back on this trade, although they'd still have to consider the roster constraints (OF depth and Rule V concerns) to properly judge the move in hindsight. Just because a move doesn't work out, doesn't mean it wasn't a logically sound move at the time or that we can fault the management for making it.
  6. Just for the record every once in a while Jacko sprinkles in an opinion that isn't completely retarded. (This obviously isn't one of those times)
  7. I believe he has the power and speed to be a 20/20 guy, but I'm not sure if he has the contact to get 20/20 off of major league pitching. So I'd be at least partially surprised if he stuck around in the majors long enough to get 20/20 in a season.
  8. He has about $2.5M on the remainder of the year, a $6M option for next year and a $1M buyout, and we received $750K from the White Sox in the deal.
  9. He was a prospect we could part with though and not lose sleep over it. I'm not saying he wouldn't otherwise contribute, but this deal makes sense for both sides in my opinion.
  10. He's more of a power lefty. I think he'll fit Miller's spot nicely.
  11. A lot of places I'm reading are saying that it's a pretty fair deal. I believe Thornton has a $6M option for next year as well. Not sure what money is being exchanged in the deal though.
  12. That's a huge benefit to us since we had a lot of players that were in rule 5 jeopardy. Here's the SP write up on Jacobs. Prior to signing with the Red Sox, Jacobs was a football commit to Auburn who focused his future on football rather than baseball. Initially raw upon entering the organization, but has shown strong baseball acumen and ability to incorporate adjustments. Ideal power hitter's frame. Body has been evolving into that of a baseball player's. Fluid swing with plus bat speed via strong hands and lower body torque. Swing is on the long side and can hit out on his front foot too much against breaking balls. High power ceiling. Plus-to-better power potential. Has put a lot of time into developing an approach and learning to be selective at the plate. Shows the knack for getting the barrel on the ball. Strong plate coverage. Fringe-average pitch recognition. Will be tested against advanced secondary offerings. Has trouble turning on balls and likes pitches out and over the plate. High offensive ceiling. Average arm that has been improving as weight drops in his chest and shoulders. Below-average defensive outfielder. Currently struggles reading balls off the bat and tends to freeze on contact, but improvement should come with experience. Solid-average speed and range. Projects as a left fielder during his career. Offense will need to carry him at higher levels, as defensive versatility is limited.
  13. Ellsbury was the last out of the inning.
  14. Got Parker to 44 pitches after 2. Not bad.
  15. I'm ok with it. Brandon Jacobs was the 18th best prospect in the system at the beginning of the year according to Soxprospects and currently came in at 36th. I liked our OF depth in the minors so I think Jacobs was expendable, and Matt Thornton has been a consistently reliable reliever. To have him along with Breslow/Uehara/Tazawa should really help our bullpen. I think we can still use another reliever but this at least solves our big need.
  16. I would have guessed it to be Quentin. Youkilis got hit a lot back when he played.
  17. I got the roughly $900K remaining by taking the $590K under budget and adding the 5% overage of the bonus pool. So we had plenty to spend without losing a draft pick. It was disappointing that we didn't sign anyone today, but overall I'm happy with the haul given a weak draft class. It's unfortunate that we had to have the 7th pick for this class though.
  18. Pete Abraham ‏@peteabe 3m #RedSox amateur scouting director Amiel Sawdaye says no draft signings at deadline today. Myles Smith (4th round) agreed yesterday God damn it. I mean it's still a good haul in a bad draft but I hate to see $900K go to waste when there were a bunch of good names left. And if none of those players would sign for that money then I don't quite agree with the strategy of drafting them to begin with. You'd think they'd have pre-draft communication of "would you sign for this?" etc. It's tough not to be disappointed but it's still one of our better draft classes.
  19. Well have fun believing what you believe. I'm sure you will. I just don't see it, no matter how many times you repeat yourself. In my opinion everything you say can (and has been) reversed, therefore I can't follow your logic without reversing back to where we started. See you next argument....
  20. Jim Callis @jimcallisba Don't believe so. @bostonolson: will #redsox sign anyone else today? #mlbdraft While I'm happy with our draft haul, I'd be disappointed with so many players unsigned and roughly $900K left to spend, especially when that is more than twice the amount of money remaining at the next highest team (2012 Yankees) I would have thought at least one of the guys would sign for $900K-$1M, not necessarily Boldt or Sheffield, but at least Nowacewski, Beauprez, Thiass, Zammarelli, Burkamper etc.
  21. I agree, that's why inevitably the argument ends at them being equal. The same place it started.
  22. I feel like we should make a poll thread for this and move the related posts to that topic.
  23. And I'll gladly relinquish my stance when someone shows me a team that has lost a game without giving up a run. Or if getting you to relinquish your stance would have any effect on my stance. You keep repeating that point, and while I think that point is right, I don't think that point refutes my and SR's stance. There's clearly something simple that one of us is missing and it doesn't look like either of us can explain it to the other one. I don't think we're arguing opposite sides of an issue.
  24. Watch it, if T-Swizzle reads that she'll write a song about you.
  25. Imagine if Taylor Swift and Adele were a lesbian couple. I can only imagine how awesome their breakup songs would be.
