  1. Does anyone else think that Lars's face looks a bit like Pedroia's? Outside of the hair obviously, but his eyes, face structure and facial hair remind me of Pedroia. Also don't forget the sheer concentration. It could be the cider, but it makes sense to me....haha. Edit: Punctuation...silly me...
  2. I also put Varitek. I think Varitek will sign with us and for around the same rate or slightly reduced. I think we'd still get a trade done for a young catcher and not even play Bard, which is ok because he had a non-guaranteed contract. That's just me though, but I still think that Varitek would be the starting catcher, especially considering the other possible options.
  3. I hope that means that he'd be able to go back for cheaper. I mean in all fairness the money that we save will be peanuts, but it'll be a message nonetheless. Plus the money could get put to good use through the draft where it isn't necessarily merely peanuts. Plus, without a trade I don't think our options are in multitude. I still say go for a trade over Tek, but I think there are worse things than a 1 year deal under a lower price, whilst being able to keep all of our prospects. If we traded for a young catcher we'd be able to get Varitek to mentor him perhaps. I trust Theo's judgment though. He's earned it.
  4. For the record, Baldelli was originally diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder, one that is more severe (often fatal) and harder to treat. Now, he was diagnosed with a different disease, one that is much less severe and one that is much more treatable. I'm not saying that because of this diagnosis, that Baldelli will spend more time on the field, but the odds are much more likely in his and the Red Sox's favor. Besides, with all of those players, it makes the impact of losing them less severe. I'd rather have Penny/Smoltz/Baldelli/Saito go down than Burnett/Chamberlain. It's similar to the principle of diversifying a stock portfolio. Even though the individual pieces may be risky, the combined probability of all pieces going down is so diminished that it's almost not even considered. I'd bet on Burnett going down before multiple of the Sox arms. Heck, that's the reason for the depth in the first place. Although I don't consider myself a gambling man, I very much like theKilo's example.
  5. Although I do kind of like the idea of 1 year deals with Papelbon. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have the longterm deal, but a 1 year deal will keep Papelbon on his toes because every year will in fact be a "contract year" There are some players that need the fire under their butts and there are few better ways to do so other than a 1 year deal. Not like Papelbon needs any ancillary motivation or anything, but that's a benefit if he is still stubborn about the long year deal. I think Lester would be more open to a long term contract, and with Pedroia and Youk's extensions I too couldn't be much happier. We've fine tuned a few areas, had a few very low risk investments, didn't spend a lot and didn't give up a single draft pick. Just one area remains...
  6. Now we just need to solve our catching problem and we'll be in business. At least we've done a good job with the back end of the rotation and the bullpen as a whole, now let's zero in on our catching quandary.
  7. Just for the record, why do we have a token Yankee fan on here anyway?? Is that to improve PR?
  8. To be perfectly honest, I feel that even if Smoltz doesn't pitch a single inning, that he still carries some value for the Sox. Sure it wouldn't be the wisest investment, but he knows how to pitch, and I think his veteran presence would do wonders for Buchholz, and it wouldn't hurt Lester, Bowden, Masterson and all the young guys (and Beckett and Dice-K can learn from Smoltz as well). Smoltz can help pitchers survive without their top-stuff, which would help in later years, but can also teach some of the players how to properly use their stuff when they have it. I doubt Smoltz will be like John Farrell or anything, but I think the mere presence and knowledge bank that Smoltz has accumulated over the years is close to worth the 5 million alone, so if he can pitch a Smoltz like season or anything near average then all the better. Smoltz also seems like a guy that would bring fans into seats, not that the Red Sox would have any problem with that. But given this economy that'll be more of a factor and that could help Smoltz pay for himself.
  9. I'm actually hoping that Lester is next, if he's eligible for one. That said, I do hope that an extension can be worked out with Bay.
  10. I doubt that the Sox payroll will be under 100 million for this coming year. In all fairness, with the way the economy is I don't blame teams for hesitating before signing long term deals with the GDP of many African countries. Also, just because the money is not necessarily being spent on FA's, does not mean that it's going nowhere, or into the pockets of the owners. It could be used for potential salary raises of the core players, or it can be used for IFA's, particularly those in the Latin American markets, and even better, the money could be used in signing a high percentage of top draft picks come June. The management has done enough recently to earn my trust, and they've gradually spent money (albeit in smaller portions) and by the looks of it they've made improvements in the team. Keep in mind that they only needed a few tweaks (outside of the catcher spot) in this offseason rather than the facelift that the people in the Bronx are getting.
  11. Oh, and I had no idea the poll would be so lopsided, I guess I may be one of the only ones with the cojones to have said "no" and announce it. Indeed, I'm one of the 3 SOB's who put no. I'll explain my reasoning later if someone wants to know that bad. Besides, after all the fighting and adults acting like children on this thread, why should I even bother with reason...haha. It also makes me wonder how hard it is to get banned around here.
  12. As a huge Family Guy fan, I just wanted to point out that the correct order was "Yankees Suck, Jets Suck, Knicks Suck'
  13. That's kind of funny that Manny's number is replaced that quickly. I kind of like it after the way he left...
  14. In all fairness, all things are not equal in terms of the draft when it comes to comparing protected picks from the year before to picks in the current draft. The picks in rounds 1-5 are protected for each team, meaning that if a team does not sign their particular pick, they are granted that SAME pick in the same slot in the next year. Also protected are the first 1-15 picks which cannot be given away through a free agent signing. Anyway, when a team fails to sign a first-fifth round pick, the new pick is protected because by definition, it is the same pick as the one that took place a year ago. What is interesting, is that if a team failed to sign a player with the pick that was granted for not signing a player in the previous draft, a new pick IS NOT granted. If that makes sense.
  15. I didn't mean images for the signatures, I only meant an image for the avatar. Just a regular text signature was what I was looking for, my apologies for not being particularly clear. How would one go and make their own signature? EDIT: Nevermind dude, it was literally right under where I'd edit my avatar. Cheers, mate.
  16. I was curious, how do you guys change your avatars?? Also can anyone help me with a signature??
  17. I believe Byrd had interest from many clubs, including a few smaller market teams. The issue was in the fact that he wanted to be with his family, and didn't want to put a strain on them by pitching a full season. Furthermore, he does plan on being a "hired gun" throughout the season as he wants to pitch for a contender later on. I can't blame the dude, but unfortunately that means we don't get a supplemental round pick out of him, which we could have really used.
  18. I don't know, I see Miguel Gonzalez, our rule 5 pick going back if need be. The likelihood of a rule 5 draft pick succeeding (or staying with the team) isn't great anyway. And for the record, Zink is still with the team since he accepted a minor league assignment. I'd bet that a team would claim Pauley, but in the event of that not occuring, we'd also be able to keep Pauley. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox traded for a catcher with multiple smaller pieces which may alleviate the current logjam problem on the 40 man roster. And you know, possibly solve our catcher dilemma.
  19. I guess I'll get sucked into this one. Anyway, I've grown a bit on Dunn as I no longer see him as only a Strikeout/Homerun/Walk machine. He seems like an offensive jumpstart, and seeing as we lost Manny his OPS and instant "just add water" homeruns would be good for our lineup. The problem, therin, lies in the fact that we don't have space for him as we have Ortiz (DH), Youk (1B), Lowell (3B), and Bay(LF) with Drew (RF). Dunn's defense is typically atrocious, so he doesn't match up well in any of the spots unless we were to get rid of Lowell or Ortiz. In my opinion, since Lowell's money is most likely a sunk cost, and Ortiz is the man, I don't see a move for Dunn getting done. Maybe if this were in a few years. In addition, I feel that with teams realizing his "potential" that it would cost way more for Dunn than it would actually be worth. And I'm sure there are many better/cheaper options.
  20. Hey guys. My name is Jared and I'm 20 and from CT. I also post on the ESPN boards but I found this site from soxprospects.com, and even though I don't like that site, I've heard great things about talksox.com. I'm a junior in college and I go to school in England, and I've been a Sox fan since I started watching baseball back in the mid 90's. I look forward to hearing from a lot of you and I hope that I can get along with you guys.
