  1. Yes, it's fine for a cheap, short term option. Better than Dalbec.
  2. Sammy Wormtongue said payroll would probably be less than last season.
  3. They needed a backup RHB at 1B. It's fine. Who backs up 3B. Reyes?
  4. That is how it's going to work the next few years. Most of the additions will be with unproven, younger players.
  5. Paxton - 1.0 fWAR, 4.50 ERA, 96 Innings How could we ever replace that production?!?!?! Rafaela could match Verdugo's fWAR if he played CF everyday and OPS'd under 700. Verdugo's 2023 is the most overrated Red Sox season in recent history.
  6. Sox are now putting their attention towards Garrett Cooper as a platoon bat.
  7. @adamjpeddle Justin Turner 2023 stats ranked amongst Blue Jays: BA .276 (2nd) OBP .345 (T-1st) SLG .455 (2nd) OPS .800 (2nd) Runs 86 (2nd) RBI’s 96 (1st) 🔥 HRs 23 (2nd)
  8. @_ParkTheBus Blue Jays fans not wanting Justin Turner isn’t too surprising. They’ve only been watching baseball for a couple years so give them a pass.
  9. Jacoby was a 4.2 fWAR guy in year 2. I don't think anyone saw that 9 fWAR coming or thought a second would show up. Xander had 4.6 fWAR in his second full year and SS is a notoriously stacked position, so All Star voting would be a hard measure there. You're underselling how good he was early on. Gunnar in BAL won the ROY with 4.6 fWAR last season. Adley has had back to back 5 fWAR seasons. Those two helped bring that team to the playoffs without needing to get to 9 fWAR or whatever. Will this crop of players feature the next Mookie Betts? Probably not! Mookie Betts is an all time great.
  10. Angels signed Aaron Hicks. Are the Sox the only bidders left on Duvall now?
  11. I don't expect it to happen again. They've lost the goodwill with me.
  12. If they NEVER say yes, this team will NEVER get back to the World Series without a complete overhaul of the pitching pipeline. That will take YEARS.
  13. @redsoxstats On August 14, 1999, Pedro was 16-3 with 199 strikeouts, a 2.46 ERA and 1.62 FIP. He showed up late for a start, and Jimy sat his ass. Sox won 13-2. Pedro pitched out of the pen and still got the win. Daubach went 5-5 with 6 RsBI. https://www.fangraphs.com/wins.aspx?date=1999-08-14&team=Red%20Sox&dh=0
  14. This is next year's FA class: Starting pitcher: Gerrit Cole (opt-out), Justin Verlander (vesting option), Max Scherzer, Corbin Burnes, Zack Wheeler, Brandon Woodruff, Max Fried, Shane Bieber, Walker Buehler, Nathan Eovaldi (vesting option), Robbie Ray (opt-out), Alex Cobb, Kyle Hendricks, Charlie Morton, Freddy Peralta (club option), Merrill Kelly (club option), Lucas Giolito (player option), Sean Manaea (opt-out), Michael Wacha (player option), Wade Miley (mutual option), Lance Lynn (club option), Kyle Gibson (club option), Luis Severino, Frankie Montas (mutual option), James Paxton, Jack Flaherty, Yusei Kikuchi, Patrick Corbin, Anthony DeSclafani, Nick Pivetta, Martín Pérez, Domingo Germán, Marco Gonzales (club option), Andrew Heaney, Eric Lauer, John Means, Zach Plesac, José Quintana, Michael Soroka, Ross Stripling, Spencer Turnbull, Luke Weaver Are they going to sit out next offseason too? Wait until '26 for Cease? Wait until '27 for Luzardo?
  15. Wikelman's ceiling is probably 4th starter. Perales' ceiling is probably 3rd starter. They still need two pitchers better than Bello if they want to be a WS team IMO.
  16. RIP to Jimy Williams. One of the great Sox managers who doesn't get his due.
  17. The problem is that Henry won't add until they are at the precipice. I don't think they'll get to the precipice without the pitching already in hand.
  18. Earlier? The last time you posted about Lauer in this thread was THURSDAY NIGHT, 150 POSTS AGO!!! How is anyone else supposed to remember that?
  19. We at port and the majority of the ships are gone.
  20. You didn't SAY that. notin: "his last couple of seasons were nice." moon: "I expected the best poster on TalkSox to jump on Wood's bandwagon, due to his xFIP numbers."
  21. The future ('26?): C - Teel 1B - Casas 2B - Grissom SS - Mayer 3B - Devers RF - Anthony CF - Rafaela LF - Duran DH - Masa Bench - Hickey, Wong, Meidroth, Abreu SP - Bello, Crawford, Wikelman, Perales, Fitts RP - Whitlock, Houck, Schreiber, Campbell, Guerrero, Bernardino, Murphy, Winckowski This relies on all the prospects reaching their potential without setbacks. Offensively, it seems ok. The rotation still looks like s*** and there's nothing to really be excited about. The pen looks about the same with minor tweaks and changes in the late innings. Without knowing what the players develop into, can we confidently state this is a playoff team? I don't think we can unless there is a significant infusion at the top of the rotation. Wikelman and maybe Perales are better fitts for the pen IMO.
  22. Last year's 5.14? He doesn't even throw a lot of innings even when he's good. Bailey worked with him directly. If there was no smoke to bringing him on, I figured there were big issues with him. They dumped Llovera. They never mentioned bringing Manaea onboard.
  23. He wasn't bad in '21 and '22, but something went pretty wrong with him last year. His k rate dropped, but his bb rate spiked. His spin rate got wonky. He wasn't very good once he was put into the pen either. He's a guy who has bounced around and has had some injury issues.
  24. Ok? We're talking about FO approaches and how it serves the fan experience, not switching fandom.
