  1. Just because you need one, doesn't mean you need an aging one for 5 years. They've had enough 1 year guys over the years that they can get another.
  2. Honestly, it's the best use of the money too rather than eating a salary and sending him away. He's still a guy who should reliably give you 110 OPS+ and can get hot for a month or two. I think there's a way to use him that makes sense.
  3. Some people on here are very obsessed with the projections so let's look at the Sox RP acquisitions: Chapman 0.8 fWAR 10.75M (tied for second highest projected fWAR on a reasonable contract) Wilson 0.5 fWAR 2.25M (same projection as Minter, but for 25% the price) They didn't want to go multi-year. I thought Kittredge a 1/10 was up their alley. Too bad Martin didn't want to stick around for one more year. He would have been the ideal addition to shore up the 7th/8th inning.
  4. They either need to eat Masa's salary and trade him, or just keep him around and hope for the best.
  5. It's hard to say what Breslow (or Chaim for that matter) would do without the fiscal limitations. I like how he's transformed the pitching development and he has focused more on the MLB squad than the prior CBO. I also give him more credit if he's also holding firm against the Bregman signing because he doesn't like the guy when Cora and Sam really want him.
  6. Not sure the Will Smith comparison is entirely fair. Smith is an elite offensive catcher and was 100th percentile in caught stealing. He also had 3.5 bWAR to Wong's 1.6. His defense isn't great, but there are enough other pieces of his game that are great that you can hold your nose over his framing. Wong was 25th percentile or worse in most offensive categories AND a bad defender. I'm not sure many of us on here even saw him as a breakout star? If you go by fWAR, his 1.1 is lower than what Vazquez had in less than 50 games in 2020. It's just not good enough when you look at the overall picture.
  7. They aren't going to take Yoshida. The point in the Cards moving Arenado was a salary dump. It makes no sense for them to take on another contract. I think the Sox grab a low contract guy like Grichuk and move on with their lives.
  8. This is a re-signing as Kolozsvary spent the season in WOO last year.
  9. Isn't the plan to put Bregman at 2b?
  10. I just don't know if they believe Mayer is fair value for Miller. Maybe they make the deal? Maybe they want something thrown in? I don't entirely understand what that organization is doing and I'm not sure even their diehard fans do either.
  11. What's above average for a 1B? 5 DRS/3 OAA?
  12. Craig Kimbrel is third all time in saves for the Red Sox? It kind of goes to show how much of a revolving door Closer has been over the year. Lee Smith had 58 with the Sox, but went on to have 235 more after leaving. Should have just kept that dude around for 5 more years. Jeff Reardon is in 6th place with on 2.5 years of being the closer. Only 4 guys above 100 saves: Papelbon, Stanley, Kimbrel and Radatz.
  13. I mean, his xWOBA, xBA, whiff and k% were all bottom 5 percentile. It was more than just a bad year. It's also the majority of his MLB service time atm.
  14. I think he's a student of hitting, not a student of the game. I haven't heard much about him taking extra time to work on his poor defense. He spends a considerable amount of his time perfecting his swing.
  15. Some would have said the same about Zack Felloff after 2023.
  16. Is there a reason that "well BTV said so" should be good enough to end the conversation or prove my opinion wrong?
  17. All those A's fans in Lodi would be devastated.
  18. Are relievers getting TJS at the same rate? Doesn't seem like it?
  19. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
  20. Right. If he only had 2 years left, it'd be a different story. 4 years of Miller vs 6 years of Mayer MAY make the A's think twice.
  21. A pre-ARB closer who had 2 fWAR last year. If Mayer is called up, does he even get to 2 fWAR? Is he healthy enough to have more fWAR than a reliever?
