  1. I think you're being too charitable to CV. He was a worse pitch framer than Evan Gattis last year and had a lower CS%. Sandy Leon had a better DWAR even when factoring in the additional games and also had a lower CS%. Sandy's CERA was also .40 less when receiving the same pitchers as CV.
  2. To me, an 0-20 streak is barely a blip on the radar. That's just a 4-5 game sample. I don't consider streaks to be anything of note until the batter is about two weeks in. I would agree that randomness would cause a bad homestand. However, it's more likely due to something else once you're 10 games in.
  3. I think luck is the smallest part of the equation. If a guy is squaring up the ball and hitting line drives, he's more likely to get on a hot streak or pull himself out of a cold one.
  4. If CV was as good behind the plate as we hoped he'd be, I don't think there'd be much discussion on who the starting C would be. Right now though, his defense has taken a step back AND he can't really hit. He has a long way to go before he can be a premier C.
  5. Yeah, at this point, I'd be more interested in finding ways to strengthen the bench and options at AAA than going for a big signing. If Bautista was 3 years younger, I'd jump at him though.
  6. Not that I take a huge stock in clubhouse stuff, but a lot of MLB guys hate Joey Bats.
  7. Their stadium will still be half empty all year.
  8. So 2013 was still Theo's team then? Without a WS, Ben looks even worse!
  9. Because of interleague play didn't exist in 1994 and the internet was still in its infancy. We have a lot more information at our fingertips these days rather than just the daily boxscore.
  10. He was pretty damn good in 95 and 96 too.
  11. Didn't we have a better version of this trade already when we got Pedro from the Expos?
  12. Yup, each knuckleballer is a distinct animal. They talk about it in the Knuckleball! doc. It's hard for guys to coach one another when things go awry because each guy truly has a unique pitch. Wake did love pitching at the Metrodome and the Trop. His best away park was Comerica, probably due to the huge OF. Of course, Skydome was a nightmare for him (worst WHIP for any stadium he pitched at more than 5 times). He also did well at Kauffman, most likely due to the large OF there as well.
  13. I agree that it would be a great idea to start the season with huge question marks at C, 3B AND LF.
  14. He's a great option as long as it's not too humid and the forecast is 0% chance of rain.
  15. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that you need to have a 40 man roster with more than 12 good arms. It's not a "logjam," it's proper roster construction.
  16. If you only have 12 pitchers on opening day, you're f***ed.
  17. Bench coach.
  18. But his bat isn't THAT good. He's a contact hitter with little pop that strikes out about 25% of the time. You'll take what he can give you as a C, but as a LF he'd need to really improve.
  19. Yeah, I don't see giving Smith a heavy workload this year.
  20. Was he on an innings limit last year?
  21. I just think Pom showed that he has a ton of upside as a starter last year. I'd give him another shot to see if the first half was a fluke. If it doesn't work out, he can go to the pen.
  22. Keeping Abad instead of Barnes, Ross or ERod is a weird goal, imo.
  23. The most recent I heard was: "In Carson Smith's case it's really a situation where some people think he'll be ready for spring training -- kind of ready to compete," Dombrowski said here at the GM Meetings. "I'm not really ready to put that on him at this point. I think it's more of a bonus if he's ready there." Dombrowski mentioned approximately June 1 as a more realistic timetable for Smith's return. "But that's still to be determined," Dombrowski said. "He's making good progress. He's felt good. But until you really get into that rehab process. Of course, if he was healthy and ready to go in the very beginning, I don't think we'd be looking for an eighth-inning guy because we feel like he could fill that role."
  24. It would be a little more comforting for me if they grabbed another guy.
  25. Time will tell if he traded high on the right prospects and kept the good ones for himself. I don't think an organization should be built solely from the farm and that there needs to be a good balance between selling and promoting prospects. I hope he's just cut the chaff. No matter what, if the Sox flame out and don't have any sort of playoff run the next 3 years, his time here should be considered a failure.
