I'm not sure they seriously considered Marrero. I think they hoped they could catch lightning in a bottle with Sandoval coming back in shape and moving him at the deadline. At that point, they could have traded for a 3b or brought up Devers.

This is what he said on Oct 11th: "Then we'll have to decide what's going to take place at that point,” Dombrowski said. “We want to make sure that most importantly his knee is as good as it can be going forward. I don't know what that's going to [entail] at this point until he sees the doctors and gets those recommendations." Other medical situations seemingly could result in surgery, but there was no announcement Wednesday. “Because there are some other people being checked out by doctors and we’ll wait to here what the recommendations are,” Dombrowski said. “There may be some people, but the season just ended so we all need to follow up with doctors.”

The key is always knowing which prospects to keep and which to deal. It seems he made the right call by keeping Devers in favor of Moncada.

There’s no issue here on the side of Cora or the side of the Red Sox. It would be great if this had never happened, but it did and everyone dealt with it then moved on with their lives. It would be cool if the media did the same thing, but we all know this will be brought up any time there’s a shred of discontent in the Boston clubhouse in 2018. Alex, if you didn’t know what you were getting yourself into before, you certainly do now.
