  1. Jon Heyman says there's a 20% chance Bogaerts is traded and 25% chance JD is dealt. Also mentions Martin Perez and Eovaldi as trade candidates.
  2. Not sure about 1903. Rosters were set to 25 in 1910.
  3. https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2020/08/boston-red-sox-prospect-jarren-duran-belts-fourth-homer-at-alternate-site-going-to-opposite-field-on-first-pitch-vs-dylan-covey.html Red Sox center field prospect Jarren Duran has showed power during simulated games at Boston’s alternate training site, Triple-A Pawtucket. The 23-year-old Duran belted his fourth home run on Thursday. The left-handed hitter went opposite field on the first pitch of the game thrown by right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey who has pitched 6 ⅓ innings for Boston this year. “He has been really exciting to watch really since spring training,” chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Wednesday. “You guys saw him in camp. That’s continued over to the alternate site. He’s made some great adjustments with his swing. He’s spent a lot of time working on his body from a physical standpoint. And that’s looked great.” https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2020/08/boston-red-sox-wont-rush-jarren-duran-to-majors-hes-made-some-great-adjustments-with-his-swing-hes-spent-a-lot-of-time-working-on-his-body.html If the Red Sox sell at the Aug. 31 trade deadline as expected, that doesn’t mean they’ll then promote all their top young prospects to evaluate them in the big leagues before the 2021 season. Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom insisted he won’t rush anyone, including center field prospect Jarren Duran, to the big leagues. Duran, a 23-year-old speedster, is a top internal candidate to take over longterm for Jackie Bradley Jr. who is eligible for free agency this coming offseason. Kevin Pillar also is a pending free agent. “We have to remember that even though this is a very different season, it’s a very different development environment, that we still need to make sure we are looking as honestly as we can at where guys are in their development and what is going to benefit them,” Bloom said Wednesday during a Zoom conference call. “My experience has been that sometimes the worst thing you can do — especially if you’re doing it because you’re unsatisfied with the on-field product at the big league level or you want to get a jolt — sometimes the worst thing you can do is to take shortcuts in a player’s development. That can lead to short-term results that are not what you want and it can also lead to some longterm difficulties. So I don’t want to single out any one player by saying that. Except to say with all the players over there and really with everybody in our organization, it’s something we need to keep in mind.”
  4. Duran has 4 Hr's down in PAW. Seems like he may have a realistic shot of making the opening day roster next year.
  5. That wuss Moyer couldn't even throw 240 innings! Bet he couldn't carry Hippo's Vaughn's jockstrap.
  6. I was thinking this as well. What's the purpose of a 25 man roster in the 1920's if your starters are all going over 200 innings. Did rosters carry more positional players? Seems like there is less of a need for relievers back then. Some of the greatest all time relievers also weren't 1 inning guys like they are now. Maybe the active roster should be 28 guys?
  7. Has it reduced his trade value in any capacity?
  8. Were Niekro/Perry/Hough also throwing 90mph?
  9. And if statistics show that a starter is less effective after the 2nd or 3rd time through the order, there's no reason to keep them out there just for them to throw innings. Are relievers better than they used to be? If you have millions and millions of dollars invested in a player, are you more likely to micromanage their health?
  10. s Someone that desperately needs to work with a pitching coach isn't the type of guy that is coveted at the trade deadline.
  11. In looking at some of those leaders: You think Koufax's career would have extended past age 30 if he didn't throw so many innings? Catfish Hunter saw a dramatic decrease in production after age 30. Lots of soft tossers like Niekro, Hough and Perry leading the league. You can't really succeed with that type of pitching anymore.
  12. If only he didn't suck balls this year.
  13. I'm not sure we'll know until Speier writes his next book. Bloom could be actively trying to move Perez. If a deal doesn't happen that doesn't mean he wanted to keep him around.
  14. It was in response to "I wouldn't be inclined to move him." Why not trade a guy like Perez if the trade makes sense? There isn't some long term planning for Perez here. He's just another guy. The only reason you don't move him is if you are really concerned with Sale and ERod coming back. At that point, he's just a healthy body to throw innings. He's a 4th/5th starter.
  15. Pedroia was athletic. The problem was that his "dirt dog" nature made him take unnecessary risks which would likely reduce the amount of games he'd play over the life of his career. However, that's not the reason his career ended. He didn't get taken out by a dirty slide because he's a dirt dog.
  16. That's why I said "or." I doubt they get more than 1 or 2 trades in. Most likely it'll either be 0 or 1.
  17. Hard agree.
  18. Yes, let's just list off a whole bunch of HOFers to prove the point that a large % of pitchers back in the day through over 200 innings. Good argument.
  19. Who said give him away?
  20. Can't that be said for any trade?
  21. Ok, so Moreland has the same trade value as the illustrious Nick Pivetta or CJ Chatham. Doesn't it make more sense just to keep him around for this year and next? He's a good veteran presence. You're not going to get a whole lot for him.
  22. How many? What %? What do you think changed in the game?
  23. The trade deadline is coming up quick, but I only see Pillar, Perez, Barnes or JD getting moved. None of those guys would be part of a blockbuster deal either.
  24. And the pitchers we all remember from 1900 - 1980 are the guys who lasted a long time. We don't talk about guys that flamed out due to injury all that often. It's the rose colored glasses of looking at how things once were.
  25. I feel like you can grab FA's like Perez any offseason. I don't see a reason to keep him around.
