Red Sox center field prospect Jarren Duran has showed power during simulated games at Boston’s alternate training site, Triple-A Pawtucket.
The 23-year-old Duran belted his fourth home run on Thursday. The left-handed hitter went opposite field on the first pitch of the game thrown by right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey who has pitched 6 ⅓ innings for Boston this year.
“He has been really exciting to watch really since spring training,” chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Wednesday. “You guys saw him in camp. That’s continued over to the alternate site. He’s made some great adjustments with his swing. He’s spent a lot of time working on his body from a physical standpoint. And that’s looked great.”

If the Red Sox sell at the Aug. 31 trade deadline as expected, that doesn’t mean they’ll then promote all their top young prospects to evaluate them in the big leagues before the 2021 season.
Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom insisted he won’t rush anyone, including center field prospect Jarren Duran, to the big leagues.
Duran, a 23-year-old speedster, is a top internal candidate to take over longterm for Jackie Bradley Jr. who is eligible for free agency this coming offseason. Kevin Pillar also is a pending free agent.
“We have to remember that even though this is a very different season, it’s a very different development environment, that we still need to make sure we are looking as honestly as we can at where guys are in their development and what is going to benefit them,” Bloom said Wednesday during a Zoom conference call. “My experience has been that sometimes the worst thing you can do — especially if you’re doing it because you’re unsatisfied with the on-field product at the big league level or you want to get a jolt — sometimes the worst thing you can do is to take shortcuts in a player’s development. That can lead to short-term results that are not what you want and it can also lead to some longterm difficulties. So I don’t want to single out any one player by saying that. Except to say with all the players over there and really with everybody in our organization, it’s something we need to keep in mind.”
