  1. Weber is kind of a surprise. They were high on him last year. Got rid of Lakins to keep him.
  2. Next week I'm on vacation so I hope to be doing something more exciting than posting on here.
  3. @PeteAbe For the first time, the #RedSox have given Jason Varitek a title in the major league coaching staff. He's the "game planning coordinator." That's a new position. Kevin Walker, who was assistant pitching coach, is now bullpen coach. Ramon Vazquez, who was listed as "coach" in the media guide last year, is now "quality control coach/interpreter." @byJulianMack The main focus of Varitek’s position, game planning coordinator, will focus in on primarily pitchers and catchers but he will also be involved in all aspects.
  4. It's a shame that this won't happen during the week while I'm avoiding work.
  5. Hall had a 1.321 OPS against LHB last year. It was .981 in 2019. It was 1.582 in 2018.
  6. There was a lot of talk early in the offseason how Springs was going to stick around. I still can't quite explain it.
  7. The fact that they let roids ride for well over a decade before they said or did anything drives me crazy. I don't believe it had anything to do with "the kids."
  8. Belle was a scary dude. He was great for baseball though. You need players like that.
  9. Stock, Hall and Hart will be in first wave of cuts IMO. That gives them 7 spots for the guys we've mentioned. The rest shouldn't be too far behind.
  10. Problem being that the best players are getting screwed the most and they typically need the least amount of training. Also, they don't even pay a poverty wage to the vast majority of minor league guys.
  11. And just increase lux tax calculation by the amount you're potentially paying minimum wage guys.
  12. So glad that they couldn't re-sign Mookie, but are planning on buying another sports franchise.
  13. It's been all downhill for baseball ever since they popped Pete Rose. In 87, everyone knew people were using roids, but nobody cared. Baseball was fun. Bart Giamatti ruined baseball. Even God knew this by smiting him a few days later.
  14. Back in the 80's, Perry's cheating was cute and endearing. It was never shown as being nefarious on This Week in Baseball. Clay using Bullfrog on his arm wasn't seen that way. And what Clay was doing made it safer for the hitters.
  15. CBA needs to shorten the pre-arb years at the very least.
  16. I feel like Covey was getting beat up every time I saw him pitch. I'm surprised at his FIP.
  17. Are they going to kick out all the guys in the 70's who were doing greenies?
  18. I doubt that'll be in the next CBA.
  19. I think Taylor could/should stick around because he was much better in 2019 before he contracted COVID. He gets a pass for this year.
  20. It's always nice to hear when players like being here. I heard that one of the reasons Xander extended was because of his great relationship with some of the front office staff. We usually dwell in misery on here because we rarely hear the good stuff.
  21. Bring out your dead! [clang] Bring out... [rewr!] ...your dead! [rewr!] [clang] Bring out your dead! CUSTOMER: Here's one. CART MASTER: Nine pence. DEAD PERSON: I'm not dead! CART MASTER: What? CUSTOMER: Nothing. Here's your nine pence. DEAD PERSON: I'm not dead! CART MASTER: 'Ere. He says he's not dead! CUSTOMER: Yes, he is. DEAD PERSON: I'm not! CART MASTER: He isn't? CUSTOMER: Well, he will be soon. He's very ill. DEAD PERSON: I'm getting better! CUSTOMER: No, you're not. You'll be stone dead in a moment. CART MASTER: Oh, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations. DEAD PERSON: I don't want to go on the cart! CUSTOMER: Oh, don't be such a baby. CART MASTER: I can't take him. DEAD PERSON: I feel fine! CUSTOMER: Well, do us a favor. CART MASTER: I can't. CUSTOMER: Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes? He won't be long. CART MASTER: No, I've got to go to the Robinsons'. They've lost nine today. CUSTOMER: Well, when's your next round? CART MASTER: Thursday. DEAD PERSON: I think I'll go for a walk. CUSTOMER: You're not fooling anyone, you know. Look. Isn't there something you can do? DEAD PERSON: [singing] I feel happy. I feel happy. [whop] CUSTOMER: Ah, thanks very much. CART MASTER: Not at all. See you on Thursday.
  22. A good primer for today's rule V deadline: https://www.overthemonster.com/2020/11/20/21579098/boston-red-sox-rule-5-groome-mata-seabold-wong-rosario-potts-bazardo-pedroia-hall-stock I agree that Potts/Rosario/Wong/Downs/Groome/Seabold will all most likely be added to the 40 man. Bazardo was on the outside looking in IMO but apparently had a really strong showing in fall instructs as his velo ticked up substantially per scouts. Maybe they'll keep 7? This article suggests Castellanos and Joan Martinez could be kept as well, but I'm not bullish on them. The cuts to the 40 man will be interesting. I don't think Pedey is gone just yet because there has been no smoke from the FO about it. If there was, we'd be hearing about a press conference today.
  23. Yeah, which means they could non tender a lot of these guys and still keep them in the system (Stock, Brewer, Springs, Walden) if they wanted to. Helps clean up the 40 man and still keep some AAAA guys around for depth.
  24. Last year, Sox grabbed three non tender guys: Plawecki, Pillar and Peraza. Sox non tendered Osich and Marco Hernandez.
